“And we were dressed from head to toe in love, the style that never goes out of fashion.”
In the six years Sex and the City was running, Carrie and co. endured the good, the bad and the total train-wrecks when it came to dating.
From Carrie’s Parisienne fling to Miranda’s pregnancy, the show was (at times) just as gut-wrenchingly sad as it was side-splittingly hilarious.
Following the fabulous foursome’s lives meant we were all taken from one emotional love story to the next.
But who would’ve known, all those years ago, exactly how much those four strong, individual female characters would teach us?
Here’s 5 of the most important lessons in love straight from Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte themselves…
Lesson #1 Don’t Stick To Your Type
When Miranda first met Steve Brady, she was typically skeptical. He was kind (and easy on the eye, obviously) but probs not relationship material. Their (very different) outlooks on life created a some serious problem. At that point, Miranda could have easily walked away, deleting his number off her all-the-rage BlackBerry. But, thankfully, she stuck around and the unlikely pair started a happy family.
Lesson #2 Never Change For A Man
When Aidan entered Carrie’s life, she thought all her Christmases had come at once. A man who’s emotional, honest and wants to commit – what could be better? Carrie changed her ways for the ‘perfect man’ by quitting smoking, giving country life a go (which was a bad idea…) and even wearing his engagement ring as a necklace. Aidan seemed like the perfect guy, but in reality he just wasn’t right for our Cazza.
Lesson #3 Don’t Ignore Red Flags
Looking from the outside in, we could ALL see that Charlotte was ignoring some serious warning signs when she met the wealthy and handsome Dr. Trey MacDougal. But his meddling mother, their sexless honeymoon and his poor attempt at a proposal were dismissed by Charlotte who would do anything to make the relationship work. While we all hoped for the best, it was really no surprise that their union ended quickly.
Lesson #4 Don’t Be Afraid To Fall In Love
“I’m a trysexual. I’ll try anything once.”
Samantha would try anything, but her golden rule was the never ever, ever fall in love. After meeting a waiter – Smith – at a restaurant, she encouraged him to become more sexually open and helped him to follow his dreams as a young actor. Somewhere in between X-rated moments and his journey to stardom, Samantha eventually fell head over heels for Smith, confessing:
“You’ve meant more to me than any man I have ever known.”

Lesson #5 Never Be Scared To Be Single
Chronicled in her weekly column, Carrie detailed her long list of messy breakups and short-lived flings. But by finding the strength to overcome her string of heartbreaks, Carrie gained the confidence to continue searching for her one true love.
“The most exciting, challenging, and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself,” she said. “And if you find someone to love the you you love, well, that’s just fabulous.”
