The Best Christmas Songs To Get You In The Festive Spirit - Femanin

As soon as October is over, we’re pretty much ready to whack on the Christmas jams, right?!

There may be some division on that…

Still, there’s nothing like a classic Christmas banger to get us in the festive mood! December is the time for decorating, baking, onesies and hot chocolates galore after all. You will all probably have your own opinions on what the ultimate Christmas song playlist should be.

However, here are some of our personal favourites…

1. ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ – Mariah Carey

Queen Mariah of course has to top our list of Christmas bangers. Although the hit never actually made it to number one (can you believe that?!), the song is an iconic Christmas jam. Back in 1994, Mariah came runner up to East 17’s ‘Stay Another Day’.

We think she’s more than made up for it in the years since with the song re-entering the Top 40 every single year since 2007.

They don’t call her the ‘Queen of Christmas’ for nothing!

2. ‘Last Christmas’ – Wham

This heart-wrenching ballad gets us in the feels every time. The late George Michael’s belting notes hit us right in the heart as we watch his Christmas heartbreak unfold in the snowy ski-resort.

The song was first released in 1984 and was ranked as the ‘most played Christmas song of the 21st-century’ until 2015 when it was topped by ‘Fairytale of New York’ by the Pogues.

3. ‘Merry Xmas Everybody’ – Slade

Noddy Holder has since done his own Christmas countdown since 2007 and it helps that he was the lead singer of band Slade, who released their Christmas single ‘Merry Xmas Everybody’ back in 1973. The song went straight to number one and to this day, just in the UK, over a million copies of it have been sold!

IT’S CHRISTMASSSSS!!!!

4. ‘Step Into Christmas’ – Elton John

1973 was a big year for Christmas bangers it seems! Elton John’s classic ‘Step into Christmas’ was released in November that year. It hit number 24 on the UK Singles chart and hit number 10 in 2018 – 45 years since its initial release!

We need a bit of Elton’s cooky yet catchy tune to really get us in dancing mood. This is definitely one for the Christmas parties!

5. ‘Happy Xmas (War Is Over)’ – John Lennon & Yoko Ono

John Lennon and Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band’s euphoric, peace-on-earth Christmas hit was released in 1971 alongside the Harlem Community Choir. At the time, ex-Beatles member John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono had been campaigning for peace for two years. The song was released as a plea to end war against Vietnam.

Posters were released with the caption ‘WAR IS OVER! If You Want It – Happy Christmas from John & Yoko’. Although the song was initially released with the main agenda of promoting peace and ending war, it has since become a classic Christmas anthem.

With the tragic murder of John Lennon in 1980, the song holds a special place in our hearts.
