1. Trader Joe's (USA)

This supermarket is located inside an old bank in Brooklyn, meaning you can do your shopping in the most spectacular old building. Trader Joe's is known for its affordable price, so it's a win win situation.

Quite literally, "theatre of food"! Located inside an old picture house, another grand supermarket you need to know about. You might be shocked to find out that it's actually a Spar! You know the corner shop from the UK? It operates under "Despar" in Italy but it's the same nonetheless. You will find all your groceries, just glamorously located under a painted ceiling and gothic arched doors.

3. Kiosks (Cuba)

Prices of groceries can be quite high in Cuba due to the cost of importing them. It's also not quite as simple as just 'popping to the shops'. There are lots of smaller stores called kiosks and very few actual supermarkets. All of these businesses are run by a state-owned retail chain.

Meet the new organic chain supermarket making a name for itself in Spain! It focusses on fresh and healthy products rather than keeping its prices low. It commits to sourcing local products and is becoming increasingly popular within Catalonia. These shops even have a restaurant inside!

Australia is NOT where you want to be doing your grocery shopping as it has some of the highest prices in the world! This is due to the cost of importing the goods on to the island. Woolworths is one of the largest chains in the country and a lot of the supermarkets are actually located inside shopping centres.

Probably the most well known supermarket in the UK is Tesco. You can definitely find one in every town. Eggs are kept at room temperature in the UK, however the milk is always kept in the fridge which is not the case in France. In addition to the big supermarkets, they have smaller 'express' stores on almost every corner.

7. Walmart (USA)

There are LOADS of supermarket chains all across the USA, but Walmart is definitely one of the most well known. They sell literally everything you can think of, from food to electronics and many even include restaurants and salons! It is an actual 'one stop shop' for everything!

Harrods in London isn't the first place you would think of to do your grocery shopping. However, its food halls are filled with everything you could possibly want! Not only that, you can snack as you go as a lot of the food halls are combined eateries too!

9. Spinney's (Afghanistan)

Spinney's is the best supermarket in Afghanistan! You would be amazed what imported goods you can find in here. Their sports supplements section is full of Whey Protein and BCAA from a variety of Western brands. One thing you won't find in supermarkets here is alcohol, as it's illegal and punishable by Sharia law which may even lead to you being whipped if caught drinking!

10. Eliseevsky (Russia)

This grocery store located in Moscow gives Harrods a run for its money! Crustal chandeliers and decorated columns adorn this unbelievable building. Inside, you can pick up all the bits you might want for your dinner, but don't forget the all important vodka!

11. LuLu Hypermarket (UAE)

With the tagline, 'where the world comes to shop', LuLu is the largest supermarket chain in the Middle East and it boasts a wide variety of international products. It also works closely with local farmers to deliver local produce to its customers too.

12. PARKnSHOP (Hong Kong)

Many international companies have made their way to China now, but in Hong Kong PARKnSHOP reigns supreme. They range in size from supermarkets to megastores and focusses on domestic food products. However, would you believe they actually have partnerships with UK's Waitrose so you might see some of those products there too!

In Cape Town and other big cities there are more and more popular supermarkets creeping in, plus online shopping too! Before this, even the open air markets in South Africa would sell everything from fresh meat to household supplies. The cost of groceries here is much cheaper than the US!

There are a variety of places to do your food shopping in Greece, like large supermarkets and open air markets. If you're heading to an open air market then you need to be early to get the best stuff! In smaller towns you might need to visit a few different smaller shops to get all your list.

Imported goods can be expensive in Brazil, you can spend a lot less buying produce that has been locally sourced. Supermarkets are easy to find in the big Brazilian cities but one thing that's hard to get hold of is pet food... most owners choose to buy cheap bones and meat from the shops and make their own!

Supermarkets in China are generally HUGE. As are their open air markets where people often choose to shop for their fresh produce. China is well known for being advanced and the country actually has the world's largest online grocery market allowing you to get your food delivered to your door.

If you haven't been to France before then you won't know that they have very strict opening times. They open at 9am and close by 8pm, they are closed on Sundays and a lot of smaller shops close for lunch every day too. One quirk of the French is that all eggs and milk are shelved at room temperature, not kept in the fridge.

Most Germans do their grocery shopping at big supermarkets rather than discount stores or markets. The big stores use a coin deposit system to unlock a trolley. You put your euro into the slot to release your trolley and only get it back when you return it to the right place. This trend is now becoming more popular in other countries too!

Mega is the name of a popular supermarket chain in Mexico. Brightly coloured and hard to miss, you will find one in every Mexican city. Full of native Mexican food, you will also found some imported American goodness too! It is just a supermarket though, don't be expecting to find clothes and electricals here!

Prism is a Finnish hypermarket, which means not only does it stock everything you want from a normal supermarket, but its also like a department store too! Meaning you can buy quite literally anything you want! Clothes, jewellery, electronic, you name it!

The largest retailer in India! So the best place to buy your groceries. They come in a variety of sizes, from neighbourhood stores to hypermarkets. It's the place to go if you want your imported western beauty products as they have a vast selection!

More warehouse heaven! Pricesmart is the place to go in Panama if you want to bulk buy all your toilet rolls. Panamanians will have to visit here if they want to stock their big family houses while still saving some pennies. Most will still choose smaller supermarkets and markets for their fresh produce though.
