1. Crescent Hotel, Eureka Springs - deceased stonemason keeps coming back ....

Image source Getty ImagesApparently, one of the most haunted hotels in the States, once a cancer hospital, was originally partially constructed in 1886 by a stonemason by the name of Michael.  Story has it that he likes to wander around at night, checking the building, grunting and tutting.  There have, apparently, been numerous sightings of him over the years.

2. Equinox Golf Resort & Spa, Manchester - original lady of the house won't go away ...

Mary Todd Lincoln, the original owner before the renovation into a Spa Hotel, has been reported to have been haunting the building, her spirit moving objects and stopping clocks, according to the guests who frequented the place.  Guests have spoken of hearing whispering in the bedroom which has frightened the wits out of them!

3. Red Lion Inn, Stockbridge - spooky man tips top hat ....

Supernatural enthusiasts should book room 301 at this historic Massachusetts inn because it's supposed to be a hot spot for spiritual activity. Guests have frequently reported seeing figures such as a small girl carrying flowers and, more scary, a man in a top hat who tips it and puts it back on.

4. Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast Museum, Fall River - doors with minds of their own ....

The same home where Lizzie Borden's family were murdered in 1892 is now a bed and breakfast business that also operates as a museum dedicated to the suspected killer and her family.  It is known for its strange happenings, including doors opening and closing on their own and a strong floral scent that some say are signs that their spirits still linger on.  Oooooh!

5. La Fonda On The Plaza, Santa Fe - ghost rising from water fountain ....

The hotel was built on a site in New Mexico that was home to the city's first inn in the early 1600s.  There have supposedly been sightings of a young man who had thrown himself into the well, meeting his instant demise, rising from the hotel fountain on a regularly basis.

6. Myrtles Plantation, St Francisville - servant comes back to haunt ....

Listed on the National Historic Register, this former Louisiana plantation goes back to 1796 and multiple photos have shown an image of the spirt, Chloe.  She had been the enslaved servant in the house in the 1800s.  The property has been named 'The South's Spookiest House'.

7. Green Park Inn, Blowing Rock - don't stay in room 318 ..

Room 318 at this inn has a history of ghostly sightings.  Some guests have reported unusual sound and electronic interference. The North Carolina Hotel has played host to a number of luminaries through the years. There were rumours that guests who checked into 318 never left!

8. Queen Anne Hotel, San Francisco - dead headmistress from former school checks in ....

This iconic hotel was once a finishing school for girls and the headmistress, Mary Lake, stuck around after her own death.  Her favourite room was 401 where she was known to cover up travellers with blankets and even partially unpack their suitcases.  That would totally unnerve me!

9. Dalhousie Castle, Scotland - Grey Lady wandering ...

Built in the 13th century, the Dalhousie Castle has been busy with ghosts roaming the property.  One of them is Sir Alexander Ramsay who wandered around the grounds and another is the ghost of Lady Catherine who haunted the castle's dungeon and was quite vocal!

10. Hotel Sorrento, Seattle - hippy spirit moves glasses ....

Seattle has had a relaxed attitude to marijuana since its early days.  Alice B. Toklas is said to have invented pot brownies in 1954 and after her death, she became the hipster ghost who haunts the hotel.  She wanders around in vintage clothes on the 4th floor or hanging around the bar (by the spirits!)

11. Dauphine Orleans Hotel, New Orleans - Civil War soldiers salute ....

There have been frequent ghostly sightings at the Dauphine Orleans Hotel, just off Bourbon Street.  They include Civil War soldiers, who would stop and salute and ladies of the night who worked the red light district.  Guests visit the venue in the hope of seeing a spirit!

12. Ross Castle, Ireland - evil English Baron won't rest ....

This 15th-century castle, located beside the banks of a lake in County Meath, Ireland, is currently a bed and breakfast. According to local legend, the daughter of 'the Black Baron', an evil English lord, haunts the Castle's halls as does the Baron himself, who shows up in the bedrooms.

13. Stanley Hotel, Colorado - most haunted hotel in America ....

One of the most haunted hotels in America is the Stanley Hotel.  It was even the inspiration for Steven King's novel, 'The Shining.'  Many guests have encountered unusual activity, such as doors shutting, unexplained voices and even pianos playing themselves!

14. Hotel Roosevelt, Los Angeles - Marilyn Monroe turns up in ballroom ....

This very famous hotel sits in the middle of Hollywood and has played host to the first Academy Awards ceremony.  It's no surprise then that celebrities flocked to its luxurious rooms.   Marilyn Monroe was a regular and is said to haunt the halls, along with Montgomery Clift, another massive star of that era.

15.  Langham Hotel, London - bright ball  manifests into Victorian man ....

A doctor who murdered his wife and then committed suicide and a man with a deep wound on his face, are both reported to be regular visitors to the hallways of the famous Langham Hotel.  Room 333 appears to be a very icy spot according to the terrified guests!

16. Russell Hotel, Sydney - sailor never left room 8 ....

The Russell Hotel  in Sydney, Australia is located near the city's best attractions but many visitors are drawn to the boutique hotel hoping for an experience of a ghostly nature!  There is a sailor who never checked out of room 8 and numerous guests are said to have encountered his presence.  There's also the unexplained sound of someone walking over creaky floors.

17. Ttoftaholm Herrgard, Sweden - heartbroken man killed himself but returns ....

This five-star hotel sits alongside Lake Vidöstern in Lagan, but before this luxury building was modernised, it started out as a private manor house, owned by a wealthy Baron.   The property is reportedly haunted by a young man who killed himself in what is now room 324 after the Baron refused to let his daughter marry the boy.  He roams the rooms and opens and closes the windows unexpectedly.

18. Flamingo Hotel, Las Vegas - owner shot to death but won't rest ....

The Flamingo Hotel is the oldest operating resort on the Las Vegas Strip and seems to have enough lights to ward off any dark spirits - that is not the case though.  Apparently mobster Bugsy Siegel played an important role in developing the extravagant hotel and casino, but angered his investors by going over budget.  He was fatally shot just a the hotel opened and reportedly wanders around the gardens, next to his memorial statue.

19. Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai - criticised architect jumps to death .... but going nowhere!

The Taj Mahal Palace is one of Mumbai's most beautiful hotels but also one of the most haunted!  Apparently, the building's architect was deeply concerned the hotel was facing the wrong direction , when built and he jumped to his death from the fifth floor.  His spirit is said to haunt the hallways and guests have seen and heard him walking on the roof.

20. Hotel Del Corondo, Coronado - ditched lover jumps to death ... but still waiting!

The very luxurious Hotel del Coronado, off the coast of San Diego, is known for its stunning views of the sea, but also for the haunting by a woman, Kate Morgan.  On Thanksgiving Day in 1892, the 24-year-old checked into the third-floor guest room to wait for her lover.   After 5 days and no sign of him, she took her own life.  There have been reports  of a pale figure in a black dress, along with pungent odours, sounds, moving objects and self-working TVs in the room she stayed in.

21. Biltmore Hotel, Coral Gables - murdered mobster wants revenge ....

Opened in 1926, the Biltmore Hotel was run by local mobsters, who stayed on the 13th floor (unlucky number!)  An unexplained murder of one notable character took place and it is he who makes himself a nuisance with his ghostly presence, ALWAYS around attractive ladies.  As he was a known womaniser, this would make sense.

22. Queen Mary Hotel, Long Beach - children who drowned want answers ....

The retired Queen Mary ship and hotel in Long Beach, California, is very well known as being regularly haunted, so much so that special tours are put on to celebrate the appearance of the spirits.  These include a lady in white and a sailor who died in the ship's engine room.  There have been sightings of children who have drowned which is distressing.

23. Algonquin Hotel, New York City - pictures fly off walls!

An elite group of writers used to meet up at the Algonquin Hotel, including the famous author, Dorothy Parker.  They referred to themselves as members of the Round Table.  When the hotels attic was renovated, unexplained noises were reported to have been coming from that area.  A photograph of Parker even flew off the wall, the glass shattering into small pieces.

24. Logan Inn, New Hope - ghost behind bathroom mirror!

There are, apparently, no less than 8 ghosts who haunt Logan Inn and the majority of sightings appear to come from room 6.  Here, guests have allegedly seen a dark figure standing behind them in the bathroom mirror as well as white mist moving throughout the room during the night.

25. Hay-Adams Hotel, Washington DC - 19th century President's wife turns radios on ....

Clover Adams, the wife of President John Adams' descendent Henry Adams, was known to have taken her life in this hotel bck in 1885.  She likes to re-appear on the 4th floor ,turning clock radios off and on and opening locked doors. Housekeepers have thought they've been called by name or have heard soft crying in the stairwell. Most of the events happen during the first two weeks in December, the time when she died.

26. Cal-Neva, Lake Tahoe - long gone Hollywood Greats spook out guests ...

In 1960, Frank Sinatra bought the lodge and built secret tunnels behind the hotel and the showroom so famous guests could escape the paparazzi.  It's where Marilyn Monroe spent her last weeks before her death.  The ghosts of both Marilyn and Sinatra have been reported to have been seen in the cabins overlooking Lake Tahoe.

27. Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, Alberta - bloody fingerprints on mirrors ....

According to hotel folklore, a family staying in room 873 were murdered and their spirits stayed there.  Guests who have stayed in the room after it was cleaned up have reported being awoken by shrieks and maids who cleaned the room allegedly found bloody fingerprints on the mirror that couldn't be cleaned off!

28. Omni Parker House, Boston - rocking chair noises .... but no rocking chair!

The historic hotel, built by Harvey Parker, has experienced many unusual paranormal activities. Charles Dickens once occupied the third floor and elevators are often sent to that floor for no apparent reason. In one particular room on the 10th floor, guests have complained about the sound of a rocking chair keeping them awake the whole night although there was no such chair in sight!

29. Emily Morgan Hotel, San Antonio - screams at ex psychiatric home ....

This hotel was once a medical facility that housed both a mosque and a psychiatric ward (a strange combination in itself!)  Frequent reports have been made of unexplained apparitions, sounds and sensations of being touched. The 7th floor allegedly receives the most hauntings.

30. Pfister Hotel, Milwaukee - unexplained poundings on headboards ....

The Pfister Hotel, a historical landmark, was built in Milwaukee in 1893 and hosts visiting baseball and basketball teams. Many of the players have reported very strange goings-on and being unable to sleep.  L.S. Dodgers Adrian Beltre has reported heard knocking in the hallway and on his door (even when nobody was there) and constant pounding on his headboard. Carlos Gomez, a baseball player for the Minnesota Twins, said that an iPod began vibrating wildly on its own and half scared him to death!
