The Worst Statues Ever Built

By Carole 1 year ago

1. Michael Jackson - with the most awkward pose

Image source Getty ImagesThis statue was created to commemorate Michael Jackson's 1996 music video, 'They Don't Care About us.'  It was unveiled in 2010, a year after Jackson's untimely death, in Santa Marta, Rio.  The statue's pose might have been one of his signature moves but looks so awkward.

2. Melania Trump - as thick as a plank of wood

The life-size statue of ex first lady Melania Trump was carved out of a living tree with a chainsaw and proudly unveiled in her hometown in Slovenia in July 2019.  Yes, it doesn't look like her and yes, the sculptor could have been blindfolded when he created it but, hey, it's still an honour ....isn't it?

3. Cristiano Ronaldo's - with extra chubby cheeks

There's no doubt in anyone's mind that Ronaldo is one handsome hunk.  Besides his good looks he has 4 sets of abs and in his day, let's not forget that he was one of the most skilled footballers to have ever walked this earth.  All that being said, why does this bust of him make him look like uhmmm someone else?

4. Johnny Depp - couldn't be more lifeless

Back in January 2010, a life size statue of actor Johnny Depp was unveiled by Serbian film director Emir Kusturica during th Film Festival, to honour him.  Whereas statues are supposed to resemble the celebrity, someone didn't get the memo and Mr Depp looks as miserable as sin!

5. Andy Murray - you would never have guessed

Andy Murray was chuffed to bits to hear a statue was being made of him to celebrate his success at the Rolex Masters in Shanghai in 2010.  No one was as shocked as the Scotsman himself to see the statue was oversized and much broader than his own frame .... and the face was nothing like his.

6. Oscar Wilde - a bit swampy

How the mermaid from the Starbucks logo got sick and was reincarnated as a statue of Oscar Wilde is a mystery that even Oscar Wilde, himself, couldn't work out.  The handsome Irish writer and poet suffered an unfortunate portrayal of his face that he wasn't over the moon with.

7. James Dean's - sad eyes

With green coloured hair, an expression of utter turmoil and a lack of eyeballs, heart throb James Dean's statue didn't do him any favours.  Even his gorgeous eyes were depicted as being as sad as possible and his nose more 'pointy' than the real one!

8. Elvis Presley - nodding off

Just outside Jerusalem in Israel, sits a 15-foot statue of Elvis, 'The King'.  It was there to entice customers to visit the cafe, 'Elvis Inn' and spend in the souvenir shop.  It's not entirely clear on first glance that it is Elvis the Pelvis. especially as the statue appears to be nodding off!

9. Kate Moss - doing a great imitation of a pretzel

Artist Marc Quinn's made his name when he designed the largest gold statue since Egyptian time.  His subject was, as he liked to refer to her, 'a modern day Aphrodite.'  Are you any closer to working out who it is?  Of course you do - it's Kate moss (alias gold pretzel).

10. Lucille Ball - or is it a demon?

Many of you will be too young to remember Lucille Ball.  She was a very successful comedic actress in the '50s and '60s and starred in her own tv shows. When her statue was unveiled in her hometown of Celoron, New York, in 2009, her fans were so outraged that they signed a petition to have it taken down and re-made!

11. Ariana Grande - tone is all wrong

Madame Tussauds decided to enlist fans on Twitter to help decide which style to use for Ariana Grande's new wax figure:   The choice was 'Classic Ari,' 'Sassy Ari' or 'Princess Ari.' Classic Ari won hands down but once the singer's figure was revealed, her fans were totally baffled by the lack of resemblance!

12. Alfred Hitchcock - we'd never have guessed

Horror writer, Alfred Hitchcock, filmed various movies at London's Gainsborough Studios. This is why his larger-than-life head is featured there.  You would be excused for thinking it looked like a melting Buddha and even though Hitchcock wasn't the most handsome of males, surely the sculptor could have done better.

13. Colin Firth - 12 feet tall and unrealistic

Not sure why it was decided to plonk Colin Firth's statue in the middle of a lake in Hyde Park, London.  Even more puzzled why it was 12 feet tall.  Firth was depicted as his character, Mr Darcy in 'Pride and Prejudice' and I'm telling you because it's not at all obvious from looking at it.

14. Michael Jackson With Bubbles - creepy

American artist Jeff Koons created this massive statue in porcelain of Michael Jackson and his best friend, chimpanzee, Bubbles. After it was unveiled in 1988, the public agreed that it was hideous and very scary!  The artist had the last laugh though as it sold for almost $6 million!

15. Britney Spears - pregnant and strange

This statue featured a very pregnant Britney Spears giving birth to her first child with her then-husband Kevin Federline.  It bared a very slight resemblance to the pop queen probably because the artist Daniel Edwards had never met her!

16. Kurt Cobain - channelling Jesus

Artist Randi Hubbard designed this sculpture of Kurt Cobain in 2014 for Washington State's Aberdeen Museum of History.  What's so creepy about it is that it looks more like Jesus that Kurt and it's actually weeping!  Art is objective but, come on, what was he thinking?

17. David Bowie - looking unusual

This sculpture of David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust was featured at experimental art studio, Art 21 in Guadalajara, Mexico.  We would expect the statue to look odd because Bowie would probably take that as a compliment but giving him an animal body from the waist down is plain weird.

18. Albert Einstein - extremely wrinkly

This is the third and last statue of sculptor Robert Berk’s bronze Einstein statue series. It lives on the campus of Georgia Tech and has received a mixed response from students.  We're worried some of them may have mistaken it for a homeless guy and reported it to security!

19. Mo Saleh - really

The bronze statue of this talented footballer raised eyebrows across the world and all over the internet for its curiously ill-proportioned body parts and an abnormally large head.  Egyptian star Mo Salah earned this tribute for his great performance at Liverpool and for his home country Egypt.

20. Steve Irwin - avec croc

The Crocodile Lovers Club clubbed together to put up a life-size statue of the late Australian conservationist and bubbly television personality Steve Irwin is shown in his legendary pose carrying a crocodile at the Parassinikkadavu Snake Park.  Only issue is the crocodile looks more life like than Steve.

21. Zac Efron - related to an elf?

While Zac Efron was guilty of this hairstyle in 2007 when he was in 'High School Musical,' he didn't deserve his waxwork to show him looking like an elf from a Christmas movie.  He's a great looking lad but his lookalike didn't do him justice, especially the eyes and nose - and the face!

22. Ben Affleck - would Jo-Lo fancy him?

If the lovely people of Boston's Dreamland Wax Museum were attempting to make a wax figure that was the double of Ben Affleck, then they failed miserably.  His waxwork made him look a little like a serial killer with guy-liner and don't think Jennifer Lopez would have approved.

23. Brad Pitt - not quite the heart throb

Long-haired Brad Pitt is definitely the best Brad Pitt although this version of his wax figure makes him look like he's borrowed a wig from Barbie's boyfriend Ken!  Brad's face appears plastic and the eyebrows don't cut it.  This is a travesty as he's a beautiful man that we need to admire.

24. Justin Bieber - one of the Sims

Justin Bieber has been in the public eye since he was 15 and discovered by Jay-Z. He has millions of fans all over the world so when his waxwork was released, they flocked to Madame Tussauds.  What they were greeted with was Justin as he would appear in the Sims computer game!

25. Naomi Campbell - those eyes

Naomi Campbell is one of the first British supermodels that made it BIG!  Now in her 50s, she still looks incredible.  I don't think she would be ecstatic at her waxwork as she looks startled and scary.  The eye shadow and highlighter shout out 1970s and doesn't do her justice.

26. Meryl Streep - the child catcher

Meryl Streep, besides being one of Hollywood's greatest actresses, is a lovely person inside and out.  Her performance in 'The Iron Lady' won her an Oscar but the team who worked on her statue certainly wouldn't.  The finished result showed she wouldn't look out of place as the wicked witch.

27. Prince William - wax Wills looks a tad shifty

What has the Prince of Wales done to deserve a statue like this?  He doesn't look dissimilar to that weird teacher at school!  One comment on Twitter suggested his appearance conveyed someone who was trying to hold in a fart!  That's no way to speak about royalty - they don't do such things!

28. Harrison Ford - Mr Plastic

Many observers of Harrison Ford's statue wondered if it was created by a kid on work experience from school.  Others wondered if Mr Ford had gone for a cut price face lift which completely changed his appearance.  Either way, not a good likeness in anyone's book.

29. Ringo Starr - in disguise

It's not good to be too critical but in this case, one of the fab four, Beatles drummer, Ringo Starr, didn't turn out too well.  First we thought this was a character from the Harry Potter movies, maybe Ron Weasley's long lost cousin but then we realised it was just a crap likeness!

30. Diego Maradona - after a shampoo and set

The late Diego Maradona has been immortalised on many occasions.  After all he was arguably the greatest footballer of all time, during his playing days.  A statue in Kolkata, India, revealed a goofy looking Maradona holding an enormous and massively bright World Cup trophy.  His hair looked like it had been set in rollers!
