McDonald’s Menu Items That Should Be Brought Back

By Kirsty 1 year ago

Fried Apple Pie

Image Source / Eat This, Not That!Apple pie is still on the McDonald's menu, of course (and thank goodness for that) but the older recipe was stopped and changed to the latest one. And there's something about the newer one that just isn't the same as the old fried apple pies.

Beef Tallow Fries

Image Source / Eat This, Not That!
These days at McDonald's, those iconic fries are cooked with vegetable oil in order to cater to meat eaters and vegetarians alike. But back in the day, they were made with beef tallow - which was definitely not vegetarian friendly, but they were very tasty indeed!

Szechuan Sauce

Image Source / Eat This, Not That!
If you're a fan of Rick & Morty, then you may remember the whole drama over people wanting this particular Szechuan Sauce. But it was taken off the menu originally due to racially-insensitive advertising. It did return for a short time when fans went crazy for it.

Salads

Image Source / Eat This, Not That!
This might not be the biggest loss to a lot of people (if you're going to McDonald's, it's highly unlikely you're looking for a delicious salad anyway) but it's still a shame to get rid of the only guilt-free thing on the menu. Due to the pandemic, McDonald's got rid of its salads to make the menu smaller.

Artisan Grilled Chicken Sandwich

Image Source / Eat This, Not That!
The McChicken Sandwich is a McDonald's staple for chicken lovers, but you may have also loved this more 'artisan' grilled chicken option before it was taken from the menu. Once again, due to the pandemic, this was one of the items to be taken off for a simpler menu. Sigh.

Arch Deluxe

Image Source / Eat This, Not That!
You may be looking at this thinking it looks pretty much like a Big Mac - and that's precisely why it was eventually removed from the menu. In the 90s, you could order this burger and feel a little bit posher saying 'Arch Deluxe' instead of 'Big Mac'.

Chicken Tenders

Image Source / Eat This, Not That!
At the very least we can bask in the fact that the sacred McNuggets aren't going anywhere, but that doesn't mean it's not a shame that the chicken tenders were taken away. They were bigger and definitely felt more of an 'adult' meal you could get away with!

All-Day Breakfast

Image Source / Eat This, Not That!
You can, of course, still order breakfast items before 10.30am, so it's not as if they're gone for ever - but it's more the heartbreak of not being able to order breakfast any time of day. Because sometimes you just have a hankering for breakfast in the afternoon, or maybe you can't make it before 10.30am. Oh well.

Bagels

Image Source / Eat This, Not That!
Bagels are such a go-to item, no matter the time of day. So when they're available at McDonald's, it's much more filling and much more tasty than a traditional breakfast sandwich. But alas, the bagel went bye-bye and you'll now have to buy your own from the grocery store.

Fruit and Yogurt Parfait

Image Source / Eat This, Not That!
Just like the salads, this is another thing you could order that could make you feel slightly healthier, even though not by much. But fruit counts, right? The fruit and yogurt parfait, which had strawberries and blueberries, used to be a side option before it was taken off the menu during the pandemic.

Onion Nuggets

Image Source / Eat This, Not That!
You may not have even known this was a thing, but onion nuggets did used to exist! They were similar to LongHorn Steakhouse's Texas Tonion and you could get them as a delicious side dipped in your favourite sauce - before they were removed from the menu, of course.

Big N' Tasty

Image Source / Eat This, Not That!
In the late '90s you could 'overwhelm your senses' with this delicious stacked burger, but the problem once again is that it wasn't much different from the staple burger offerings like the Big Mac - so it was removed.

Hula Burger

Image Source / Eat This, Not That!
Now this one is going to be one of those that you either love or hate (and the pineapple on pizza people, we're looking at you). Not that it's available anymore anyway, but would you eat this burger made from cheese slices and a huge chunk of pineapple in place of a meat patty?

Fruit and Walnut Salad

Image Source / Eat This, Not That!
This was a little ambitious to be labelled a salad because it was basically just slices of apple with candied walnuts and then some yogurt. But the combination of 'salad' and 'apple' makes it sound ridiculously healthy, so there's that. But it no longer exists!

Fish McBites

Image Source / Eat This, Not That!
If you're a fish lover and usually order the Fillet-O-Fish anyway, you may have loved this fish alternatives to chicken nuggets. It was originally a favourite during Lent, and even had a catchy jingle to go with it. So why did they ever get rid of these bad boys?

McLobster

Speaking of fish - there definitely needs to be more fish options on the menu, doesn't there, and this McLobster was just a great idea. The delicious lobster roll came with a generous serving of bread and lobster back in 1993, but they had to take it off the menu due to supply issues and not really making a big buck from it. What a shame! Apparently it's still available in some countries, though.

McSalad Shakers

It was 2000 when McDonald's tried to make boring salads that little bit more interesting. For their premium salads, they introduced the McSalad Shaker. You could have Garden, Grilled Chicken Caesar or Chef. And yes, it was just a cup, but there was something about it that was more interesting that a bowl!

McDLT

This one looks pretty old, and that's because it most definitely is! This throwback comes from 1984, where the container meant you could keep hot and cold parts of the burger separated into these two different compartments to eat as you saw fit. As our modern day minds now tell us, though, the amount of polystyrene waste from this would be a no go, soggy burger or no soggy burger.

Chicken Selects

Just like the Chicken Tenders, the Selects were McDonald's attempt at a 'fancier', more grown up option to the chicken nuggies so that people could order something that felt more like a full meal, with bigger pieces of chicken. Sadly, it was taken off the menu - because nuggies will always come out on top.

Eggs Benedict McMuffin

The Egg McMuffin is a popular breakfast item at McDonalds, so it makes sense why they might want to create some variation of it. They introduced the Eggs Benedict McMuffin back in 2016, which sounds very swanky, but the issue was it wasn't even Eggs Benedict because there was no poached egg! It didn't last very long on the menu.

The McJordan

In the early 90s, when the Michael Jordan frenzy hit its peak, McDonald's went the whole hog and even named a burger after him. The McJordan was a cheeseburger, served with onions, bacon, pickles and BBQ sauce. Needless to say, you can't get this delicious burger anymore!

Mighty Wings

You'd think that a chicken wing option at McDonald's would go down a treat, but apparently the Mighty Wings didn't do very well. They ended up having to reduce the price to try and sell, just to get rid of the batch of chicken wings they had in stock, before they were eventually discontinued.

Chicken Fajitas

Although chicken fajitas are popular and delicious, it's surprising to see them on a McDonald's menu. Back in the 90s, they gave it a go with fajitas and breakfast burritos - but alas, they were discontinued after burger and fries was the go-to for a lot of people.

Chopped Beefsteak Sandwich

Back in 1979, McDonald's unveiled the Chopped Beefsteak Sandwich, which was more long sandwich roll than burger, then completed with steak sauce and onions. It never sold very well, though, but that could be because other items on the menu, like classic burgers, were cheaper. Great idea though.

The McHotDog

Image Source / Eat This, Not That
This one just proves that you can't just stick 'Mc' in front of a well known food item and expect it to sell. While the McHotDog is actually still sold in Japan, it didn't do very well in the US. Apparently, a lot of the controversy came from the founder once saying he never wanted a hot dog on the menu because of not knowing what's inside the skin, and not wanting to compromise quality of food. Oops.

The Triple-Double Burger

This burger was also known as the Superhero Burger, and the reason for that was because it coincided with the release of the movie Batman Forever in 1995. The burger was three beef patties and a couple of slices of cheese - but aside from the pictures of Batman on the packaging, it didn't really have anything to do with the comic book hero, and wasn't anything special in terms of burger. Anyway, it was removed from the menu!

The Angus Burger

Image Source / QSR Media Asia
In a bid to once again make certain burgers that little bit gourmet and posher, McDonald's introduced the Angus Burger. Unfortunately, it didn't really take off, and the main reason for this was the rising price of beef in the US.

McPizza

This is actually a fantastic idea for a popular fast food chain, because who wouldn't want a slice of pizza on the go? The trouble was that the McPizza, which was added to the menu in the 1980s, took far too long to prepare for a fast food chain, and it had to be taken off.

Hot Mustard Sauce

It's not only burgers and pizzas that have been axed from the menu - even tiny little delicious sauces are up for the chop, too. This popular dipping sauce was taken off the menu in 2005 due to 'poor sales', but to say it didn't sell very well, lots of people demanded to bring it back!

Cheddar Melt

It's actually mindboggling why this one was taken off the menu when it seems delicious - an upgrade from the basic cheeseburger, the Cheddar Melt in 1988 was a chunky burger with cheddar cheese sauce and topped with grilled onions.

Here are 30 things we bet you have forgotten about McDonald's... Ronald McDonald!

Who remembers the iconic image of Ronald McDonald? The face of McDonald's...until everybody decided that they were terrified of clowns and poor Ronald was cut from the marketing of McDonald's completely. Maybe some people from the 80s/90s still miss this guy.

2. The old packaging designs

In one way it looks a lot different to what we have today...yet if you look, has it actually changed that much really? There's something very 80s feel about those repeated little 'M's in neutral colours. Maybe this style should come back as a nostalgic throwback.

3. All the styrofoam!

Not only is this not environmentally friendly at all but it also gave your food that weird kind of plasticky taste to your food...so we're definitely glad this has gone. Also, that squeaky sound of styrofoam - who doesn't shudder at the sound of that?

4. The kid's activity sheet

Everyone loves a word search and a little maze that you have to weave your pencil through. These classic puzzles used to be great fun as an 80s/90s kids? Maybe McDonald's didn't think this generation would enjoy the entertainment of a dot to dot in a world of iPhones and Xboxes.

5. The kids seating area

Not only did McDonald's used to have an entire separate seating are for kids...but they also had cool kiddy seats with different character shapes. As a kid, it was always special when you'd go here with your friends or your siblings and get to choose which cool seat you'd get.

7. Super Mario 3 toys

Super Mario 3 toys...now if you got one of these toys in your Happy Meal then you were delighted. They were all the rage and the toy everybody wanted - and you could collect them! These were the days when you used to get really cool toys in your Happy meals.

8. The McNuggets' awaaayy advert!

McDonald's advertising used to be very different from what we get now in terms of their advertising. It was a little bit more whacky and adventurous than we get nowadays. This McNuggets awaaay advert, everyone from the 80s and the 90s will remember this one, surely!

9. McDonald's food transformers

Another amazing McDonald's Happy Meal toy was the McDonald's food transformers where their plastic food replicas turned into cool transformer figures. This one was great to play with because you could watch it transform from a plastic bag of chips to a strange kind of robotic creature.

10. The pullback racing cars

Who didn't love a pullback toy? Yes, they may not be as advanced as an electric or controllable car. Yet, pulling them back and watching them fire in the direction you aimed was extremely satisfying. So, it was a good day at McDonald's when you found one of these.

11. The nugget toys

Oh, the nugget toys. They didn't exactly look like nuggets they definitely look more like a potato. But they were undeniably cute, nonetheless. These were another thing you may remember if you're from the 80s, but sadly if not, you won't remember these cute little nuggets.

12. Mayor McCheese

Mayor McCheese, who remembers him? He was at one time, the mascot of McDonalds and for some time and the mayor of fictional McDonaldland. However, his guys were also discontinued due to a lawsuit being filed. So, it was bye, bye forever to Mayor McCheese.

13. The McDonald Highchair

Now we have just plain wooden highchairs in McDonalds. But at one time, there were these cool little highchairs with themes and characters. McDonalds seemed to go for a more simple and minimalistic style in their restaurants and all of these whacky little extras went.

14. The old drive thru menus

These drive thru's look seriously old. Now we are used to these screens with touch systems and everything. But when you drive up to the drive thru this is what you used to see. There's no electronic screen here yet. This would have to be manually changed each time an item on the menu or a price changed.

15. And the Mcdonald drink stirrers

Now we have little wooden stirrers instead of these themed plastic stirrers. Again, this is way better for the environment than throwing away one of these, every time you'd used it. All that plastic that used to be wasted. Yes, we no longer have the classic M on the end...but who really cares when they're just stirring their coffee?

16. Some McDonald's had a Nintendo N64

Were you one of the lucky ones who had a local McDonalds with a Nintendo N64. Some branches had one of these for people to pay on. And this was equal to the excitement you felt getting a McDonald's Happy Meal. Of course, these weren't in every chain. Juts a select few.

17. The Mac Tonight Moon Head campaign for the out of hours McDonalds

This advert was a little bit strange. Do you remember the Mac Tonight Moon Head advert? It was advertising out of hours McDonald's, back when 24 hours McDonalds weren't a regular thing that you could find pretty much anywhere you wanted. At this point, it was a new concept.

18. McPizza....

Now this sounds great, doesn't it? But, when it was introduced in the 80s the product didn't sell nearly enough, and it was a huge flop. So, it was taken off the menu everywhere and it has even made a comeback again. It also took 11 minutes to prepare which by McDonald's standards is slow.

19. Or spinning on the cheeseburger seat?

Oh, the cheeseburger seat. Who didn't love to go for a swim on this. All the people from the 80s and 90s will remember these things as a part of their McDonald's experience. And now all of these little extras and quirks have completely gone from the layout and structure.

20. The Halloween buckets

We love the fact that McDonald's used to get in the festive spirit, in the theme for Halloween with spooky themed decorations. They had these Halloween buckets. These were brought out every year and were a staple part of the Halloween McDonald's visit.

21. These Halloween gift certificates for a freebie

Even better than little Halloween buckets were the paper Halloween gift certificates. If you were lucky enough to get your hands on one of these certificates, then you had yourself a freebie. It wasn't much - maybe a free drink. But it felt like more.

22. Getting Beanie Babies in Happy Meals

Beanie Babies are another icon from the 80s and 90s. Everyone loved these little beanie toys. And even better - you could actually find their mini versions tucked away inside your Happy Meal. Now these were so much better than the things we get today inside Happy Meals.

23. The burger jail

One of the strangest things to have come out of McDonald's in the 80s was definitely the playground burger jail. After climbing into the cop burger's mouth, you ended up in this jail. Kids loved it. But this was scrapped. And now we have no playgrounds at all...

24. The fast-food wars

In the 80s/90s there were a string of fast-food chains popping up and trying to compete with McDonalds. There were multiple adverts from different branches such as Wendys who were aiming them at McDonalds. For example, the 'where's the beef' advert. Which aimed to call out McDonald's lack of meat quality.

25. The freebies during the Olympics

In the USA, if there was a win in the Olympics then your chances of winning also increased and it was very likely that you won a freebie. In fact, in the 80s during the Olympics McDonald's gave away twice the number of Big Macs than they had thought, due to them doing so well int he Olympics.

26. The prices were SO low

Prices used to be crazily low. A burger cost around 4o cents. 40 cents! Can you even imagine this now. So, if you were sure that prices were way lower in your youth and people just thought it was a sign of you being out of touch - you were absolutely right. The prices have massively gone up.

27. Garfield Mugs

Everyone wanted these. There was pretty much nobody at the time who was not a Garfield fan. And these collectible glasses were extremely cute. It was the thing that everybody wanted when they went to McDonald's during this time. We wonder if anyone still has these 80s McDonald's memorabilia.

28. The $1,000,000 prize to sing the jingle

In the 80s there was the chance to win a heck of a lot of money, if you were able to sing the jingle the entire way through when asked, without making a single blunder. In the end the very lucky winner was a 13-year-old boy who sang the whole thing perfectly.

29. The professor scientist

The professor of McDonaldland actually existed in the 70s. But it was the 80s when he was introduced as a bigger and talking character (previously he had been silent). It was this character who was a part of the story of making the chicken nuggets come alive.

30. The McDLT

There was the McDLT which was introduced in the 80s. It was a new revelation of McDonalds that there would be fresh lettuce and tomato on the burger. The big thing was the packing. One side kept the burger hot; one side was to keep the salad cool. It was an environmental nightmare and scrapped in the 90s.

31. Strawberry Cheesecake McFlurry

The Strawberry Cheesecake McFlurry wasn't a staple on the menu for long. While it combines two of our favourite foods, cheesecake and ice cream, the dessert wasn't popular among McDonald's diners and so eventually McDonald's had to remove it from the menu.

32. Mulan Szechuan Sauce

When Mulan was released in 1998, McDonald's decided to celebrate by releasing a limited edition Mulan-inspired Szechuan sauce. After the hype of the film died down, McDonald's removed it. Since then, many people have complained and the dip was brought back for limited periods of time.

33. Spanish Omelette Bagel

McDonald's fans have not gotten over the removal of this beloved item from the breakfast menu. Back in the early 2000s, McDonald's released a Spanish Omelette Bagel which was made using ham, egg, cheese and spices. It wasn't popular enough and lasted a short time on the menu.

34. McStuffins

McDonald's have been known to delve into many different types of cuisines and they even released their own version of the hot pocket in 1993. It came in a variety of fillings including pepperoni pizza and teriyaki chicken. However, they didn't prove a popular choice.

35. McSoup

A massive shock on a McDonald's menu would be some McSoup. It proved to be popular among some of its customer base, and was essentially a chicken noodle soup in a McDonald's cup. To no surprise, the chicken noodle soup didn't take off on the menus.

36. Sweet Chilli Sauce

Now this was a shocker when McDonald's pulled it from the menu. The fan favourite dip was a staple among McDonald's diners and loads of people loved it. It's been described as a duck sauce with red pepper flakes and we can only hope that they bring it back.

37. Son of Mac

While the Son of Mac has been hacked from the McDonald's menu, there's actually a way you can probably still get your hands on it. If you didn't guess right, the Son of Mac is just a Big Mac but with one patty rather than two. If you just ordered a hamburger with Big Mac sauce you'd probably have the same outcome.

38. The McFeast

The McFeast would probably make you think of a burger quite big and hefty, and that it was. The McFeast included lettuce, tomato, pickles, mustard, ketchup and a McFeast Deluxe sauce. While it's been discontinued in many countries, Australia have had their hands on it since 2014.

39. All Day Breakfast

At McDonald's, all-day breakfast was yet another victim of the coronavirus. Thankfully, you may still place an order for a Golden Arches breakfast before 10:30 am. I think it is definitely agreed that breakfast should be sold throughout the day rather than just in the morning.

40. McRib

A pork patty resembling a little rack of ribs, served on a sandwich bread with BBQ sauce, onions, and pickles, mmmm. This famous menu item hasn't been seen since about 2012, so I reckon it's now probably time for its fantastic return. Take note McDonald's!

41. El Maco

The El Maco burger was made up of a a beef patty on a sesame seed bun with cheese, tomato, lettuce, sour cream, and El Maco sauce. The main thing that attracted people to this meat sandwich was its delicious El Maco sauce, and apparently people were obsessed with it.

42. McSpaghetti

McDonald's even delved into some Italian cuisine at times. Not only did they try out a McPizza, they also tried out some McSpaghetti too. It didn't stop there, if you weren't a fan of spaghetti, you could try their other options of lasagne or fettucine alfredo as well.

43. Chicken Big Mac

As you can probably guess, it was a typical Big Mac, but with two McChicken patties in place of the beef patties. This should definitely have been a permanent item on the McDonald's menu considering its popularity... bring it back McDonald's or else!

44. Chocolate Fudge Brownie McFlurry

Well, you took a look at the Bubblegum McFlurry, but now take a look at this one made up of soft serve, brownie pieces, and chocolate syrup. There have been a lot of great McFlurry flavours, but this one is undoubtedly among the best. Those brownie pieces were to die for.

45. McLean Deluxe

Going low-fat was very popular in the 1990s, which may have been the inspiration for the McLean Deluxe's introduction. The majority of the beef in this low-calorie Quarter Pounder was lean, but 10% of the ingredients were merely water and carrageenan.

46. McLean Chicken Grill

We're sorry if you prefer the grilled chicken at McDonald's than the crispy chicken. Another pandemic victim on the McDonald's menu is the Grilled Chicken Sandwich, however the McChicken is still on the menu. Although, we all have to agree that the fried chicken HAS to stay.

47. McLean Fish Sandwich

This one almost begs the question... why? When you have a fillet-o-fish (that can't be that popular surely) why bring it out a McLean version that was healthier than the other. Nobody asked for this McDonald's... we just want the McRib to come back please.

48. McLean Salad

The question is how does a salad get any leaner? We've seen a few absurd choices in terms of the menu items that McDonald's chose to roll out and this probably one of the worst. At the end of the day, if you're getting a salad, you're going to Subway, not McDonald's.

49. McLean Hot Mustard sauce

The McDonald's Hot Mustard Sauce was much beloved by its absolute mega fans at the time, but McDonald's had to discontinue the dipping sauce in 2005 due to the lack of sales. Many McDonald's diners have their fingers crossed that one day it'll make a return.

50. Hot'n'Spicy McChicken

Back in 2006, the basic yet tasty spicy chicken sandwich was removed from the menu. In certain countries it persisted, although not for very long. Served on a nicely toasted bun, the sandwich is described by McDonald's as crispy, succulent chicken seasoned with a robust mix of spices, topped with shredded lettuce, and mayonnaise.

51. Southern Fried Chicken

While the McNuggets continue to be one of the most popular dishes available, in the 1960s, McDonald's gave a traditional Southern fried chicken recipe a go. Unfortunately, McDonald's soon removed the fried chicken from the menu since it couldn't compete with other well-known chicken franchises.

52. Mini Corn Dog

McDonald's Mini Corn Dogs was not the chain's first attempt to add fair food to the menu. The identical dish was first available as Corn Dog McNuggets in 1991, and McDonald's intermittently offered popcorn chicken, another beloved carnival food, through 2012.

53. Zoo Pasta

The zoo pasta was tiny pieces of ravioli cut into the shapes of animals, served with a tomato sauce and tongs (to pick up, dip, and eat the pasta). It might not taste as fantastic as we all remember, but the memories and enjoyment of eating Pasta Zoo make up for that.

54. Sipahh Straws

Along with the Pasta Zoo, McDonald's also rolled out the sippah straws, much like the Nesquik milkshake straws. All you have to do is pop the straw into some milk and give it a sip... instant milkshake! What do we need to do to get them to bring this back?

55. Bubblegum McFlurry

The Bubblegum McFlurry was the usual ice cream topped with marshmallows and blue bubblegum sauce. Fans were distraught when it was removed, and some seethe at never having the change to try it. However, there is a rumour that this is one of the greatest McFlurry flavours ever!

56. Loaded Fries

It was essentially McDonald's chips, but with additional toppings like gravy or mayonnaise with truffle flavour and parmesan cheese. When you stuffed your face full of gravy-topped chips, late-night McDonald's runs were that much more enjoyable. Everyone can agree to that.

57. McOz

On a sesame seed bun, it had a beef patty, a fried egg, beetroot, tomato, lettuce, cheese, onions, mustard, and tomato sauce.
The burger was true Australian and although it might sound strange that beetroot made an appearance, it was a true Aussie fan favourite.

58. Custard Pies

You might have heard of the apple pie but have you hard of the custard pie? It was a hot custard filling encased in a crisp pastry. Do we really need to explain why we need it back? The notion of biting into one of these has already started to make my mouth water.

59. Spicy McNuggets

No surprise, the spicy McNuggets were a version of the McNugget that was spicy and came with a chilli dipping sauce. I think I can speak on behalf of all spice lovers when I say it was totally unfair that this beloved item was removed from the menu. Bring it back!

60.Spicy Jalapeño Burger

This burger was made up of a sesame seed bun with grilled or crispy chicken, lettuce that had been chopped up, jalapenos, and jalapeno sauce. McDonald's eventually removed it from the menu and it did not go down well with it's spice-loving fanbase. Not good enough!
