1. Avoid Travelling To Countries That Have Mosquitos

There are PLENTY of destinations that are prone to being plagued by these blood-sucking creatures, and it is best to try to avoid visiting these countries if you're worried about getting bitten by mosquitos. It is best to research potential holiday locations to see if they have problems with mosquitos ahead of time before visiting.

2. Don't Work With Animals

We all love being around our furry four-legged friends and we would do anything for them, but it is best to avoid working with animals that live outside if you're wanting to avoid mosquito bites. When mosquitos can't find humans to terrorize, they flock to animals to get their fill of blood, and they'll definitely see you as a tasty treat.

3. Take A Hike...Or Not

If you like hiking and walking then you may have to compromise a little bit here - hikers are WAY more prone to being attacked by mosquitos compared with people who don't go for walks. You're an easy target for a hungry mosquito when you're out in the wild and if you don't plan ahead, you may find yourself with some nasty bites when you get home.

4. Camping Is A No Go

Camping, by its nature, means you'll be outside pretty much all day, including early mornings and late evenings. Mosquitos LOVE preying on unsuspecting people, especially early in the morning and late at night, and if you're in their back garden, unprepared and without a way to repel them, you don't stand a chance.

5. I Didn't Like Forests Anyway

Mosquitos love hiding away in dark, damp places and forest areas are literal breeding grounds for our not-so-friendly flying friends. Even just spending a few minutes in your local woodland area can award you some horrible bites and it is no surprise that people wanting to avoid mosquito bites avoid forests like their life depends on it.

6. Use Insect Repellent

There are many, many ways to avoid mosquito bites, but one of the main ones has got be using some sort of mosquito repellent. It doesn't matter too much which brand or type you use, they all do the same thing: repel mosquitos. You can even get repellents that double up as sunblock, so you can protect your skin from insects AND the sun. Pretty cool.

7. Cover Your Arms And Legs

Mosquitos love an easy meal, and there are none so easy as a person walking around wearing nothing but a tank top and a pair of shorts from Levi's. Covering up your vulnerable arms and legs is a sure way to get mosquitos to back off, or at least think twice before attempting to bite you.

8. Use Permethrin On Your Clothes

Want to take your mosquito defence systems to a new level? Try treating your fashionable long sleeve t-shirts and jeans with some Permethrin cream. This acts as another layer of protection from those pesky mosquitoes, especially when doubled up with a healthy dose of mosquito repellent.

9. Make Sure Your Hotel Has Air Con

If you're planning to travel to a country that is infamous for its' mosquito population, you better be sure to book a hotel or Airbnb with sufficient air conditioning. Even an average air con system can do wonders for repelling mosquitoes, and an added bonus is that it'll keep your room nice and cool in hot weather.

10. Your Room Needs A Door Screen

If you don't have the luxury of a decent air conditioning unit, you better make sure that you have a door screen installed in your property. Mosquitos are crafty creatures and will find their way into even the most prepared of houses. Having a door screen can help block mosquitos from paying you a nasty visit.

11. Use A Mosquito Net When Sleeping

Mosquitos are really active at night time, which means unless you plan on staying awake with a fly swatter in hand, you might want to invest in a good quality mosquito net to protect you whilst you're asleep. Mosquitos love a stationary target, ESPECIALLY if the target can't swat them away, and a mosquito net will help deter them.

12. Make Sure Your Mosquito Net Is Thick And Dense

There are plenty of mosquito nets out there and you might be tempted to save yourself a few dollars and order a super cheap one off of Amazon for next day delivery. The best mosquito nets are the ones that are really compact and don't have any room for the crawlers to get in, so don't cheap out on a good net!

13. Use Permethrin On Your Mosquito Net

Our trusty friend permethrin is back with a bang, but this time you're not spraying your clothes. Did you purchase a decent mosquito net but found that you were STILL getting bitten? Damn those sneaky mosquitos. Try using permethrin on your net to help deter them even more, giving you another layer of protection.

14. Use Larvicides

There might be a way to stop the mosquitoes before they even grow into mosquitos. Larvicides are used to kill the larvae of mosquitoes, which is handy when there seems to be an infinite amount of mosquitos hanging around. Mosquitos breed near water, so spray a decent amount of this stuff near any open water and it should go a long way.

15. Use Adulticides

This is the step up from larvicides and is used when there is an infestation of these horrible flying blood-sucking machines. Mosquitos love to hide in those dark places when they're not active, so spray them with a good dose of this stuff to remove them and show the other mosquitos that you're not to be messed with.

16. Cover Up Water Storage

If you have an outdoor pool or even a water tank, you MUST cover these up when you can. Mosquitos absolutely LOVE water and near open water is their chosen location for breeding, and if you don't cover up your water you might find an army of mosquitos waiting for you!

17. Clean And Remove Objects That Hold Water

If you have anything in your yard that can hold water, like plant pots, tyres, outdoor sinks or buckets, make sure to clean and sterilize these as often as you can. Mosquitos will flock to these objects like bees to honey, and they're not easy to get rid off. Clean them often, or remove them entirely, and you'll stand a better chance against them.

18. Keep Doors And Windows Closed

Mosquitos are always looking for new places to hide out, whether that be the aforementioned forests or a damp, dark corner somewhere in your house. If you keep your windows open in the heat of summer, this might just be the gateway to mosquito hell, so make sure you keep your windows and doors closed where possible.

19. Avoid Areas Prone To Flooding

If you're considering relocating, make SURE you're aware of areas that are prone to flooding. There are plenty of locations that have yearly floods, and water equals mosquito problems. Avoid flood-prone areas at all cost if you plan on keeping your skin clear and clean of mosquito bites.

20. Don't Go Near Rivers Or Lakes

People love going for walks near rivers, or even fishing or swimming in them. It seems like a great idea for a fun summer outdoor activity, but be warned: mosquitos will be nearby. If you do plan on spending time near a river or lake, make sure you take preventative measures to repel to inevitable mosquitos.

21. Use Scents Like Cinnamon Or Lemongrass

Mosquitos HATE a number of natural smells, and it is no surprise that they seem to hate smells that humans LOVE. Use this to your advantage if you're sat outside on a warm summer's eve. Try using scents like cinnamon and lemongrass to deter the mosquitos away.

22. Use A Fan

Whilst using a fan indoors can make your hair flow in a way that is synonymous with 80s music videos and modern-day superhero films, using them could be your ticket out of mosquito town. Mosquitos really hate wind of any kind, whether that be natural or electrically-powered, so make sure to install a fan in your house.

23. Don't Drink Beer

If you've visited your friends house for a cookout, you best believe that mosquitos will be around ready to pounce on unsuspecting leisure-goers. Mosquitos love the smell of beer, lager and ale, so if the men are passing around some cans of bud light, be sure to stay away and let them take the mosquito-bite hit.

24. Have A Barbecue

The smokey smell of a summer barbecue brings back wholesome memories of hanging out with friends and loved ones. Another great pro to the many cons that mosquitos bring is that they really don't like smoke. Get a fire going, throw on some burgers and enjoy your mosquito-free evening (until you put out the fire that is).

25. Light A Cigarette

There aren't too many positives that come from smoking cigarettes, but lighting up a cigarette is a sure way of getting mosquitos to stay the hell away from you. Mosquitos hate the smell of cigarette smoke, along with just hating smoke altogether. We don't recommend taking up smoking as a new year habit, but it might keep those mosquitos away.

26. Avoid Using Scented Lotions

Using scented lotions is as much a practical moisturising task as it is a relaxing, self-love activity. However, a relaxing Friday night of moisturising self-love can easily turn into hell as mosquitos love the smell of scented lotions and creams. Try to avoid using scented lotions and opt to use non-scented ones.

27. Maybe They Are Mini Vampires?

Much like the undead, immortal blood-sucking creatures of Bram Stoker's' 'Dracula', our flying protagonists hate the smell and taste of garlic. I don't advise bathing yourself in garlic, but cooking with it or growing some in your yard might deter the mosquitos. Maybe they also hate crosses and holy water...

28. Wear Loose Clothing

Baggy clothing was one of the keys to looking fashionable in the 90s and early noughties, and they seem to be making a comeback in 2023 as well. Not only do baggy clothes make you look cool, young and hip, but they might also help keep the mosquitos away. When your clothing is moving around a lot it is hard for the mosquitos to cling onto you.

29. Make Sure Your Clothes Are Bright

Much like the dark, damp places that mosquitos love to nest in, mosquitos generally love anything that is dark. Wearing bright, light and flashy clothes can help deter them away from you and target someone who is wearing darker clothing. Another plus-side is that if you're feeling grumpy, wearing super bright and whacky clothing might keep other people away from you as well!

30. Avoid Early Mornings And Late Evenings

Love an early morning run, or a late evening drink with a friend? It might be time to change up your routine. Mosquitos are most active in the early mornings and late in the evening and night time, which means if you're active during these times you'll be a prime target for mosquitos.
