20 Carry On Essentials For A Long Haul Flight

1. Travel Pillow

A travel pillow is small and light so not inconvenient to carry around.  You can strap it to your backpack and it won't even look ridiculous!  For long haul flights, a travel pillow is essential to get a bit of shut eye and not feel uncomfortable from a stiff neck!  It can be easily washed after use, ready for next time.

2. Sleep Mask

It's not easy to sleep on a plane even if you are SUPER tired.  For long flights, it's always good to get a few short naps in or you may struggle to function when you arrive at your destination.  The solution is easy.  Block out the light with a sleep mask, relax and you should be able to get some rest.

3. Ear Plugs

As with sleep masks, regardless of whether it's a day or night flight, ear plugs can help you nod off.  The last thing you want is to be kept awake by a crying baby so, by sticking the ear plugs in, you won't have to suffer like the other passengers!  They are also good if you don't want to engage in conversation with a random person!

4. Thick Socks

Many passengers, especially on long haul flights, like to kick off their footwear and get as comfortable as they can.  It can be a nuisance to put them back on when visiting the bathroom or taking a walk down the aisle, to keep the blood flow running smoothly.  A pair of fluffy socks is the answer and they will keep your feet all toasty!

5. Kindle

Even though there is nothing quite like starting a new hard backed book with the smell of  brand new pages being turned.  That's all well and good for home but for travelling, download reading material on to your Kindle.  It takes up minimal room and you can subscribe to as many books as you want, some of them even being free!

6. Noise Cancelling Headphones

Here's a handy tip - bring your own headphones because the airline ones which are often supplied free of charge, are rubbish!  You would be able to hear out of them but they cannot cancel out noise like a decent pair does.  They take up no room and they should always be on your travel list.

7. Eyeglasses/Contact Lenses

It's such an easy mistake to make, forgetting your reading glasses or spare contact lenses for the duration of your trip.  If you wear daily lenses, bring a couple of extra pairs as anything can happen - and usually does when you are away from home.  As for your reading glasses, keep them in a glasses case to avoid scratches.

You may think it's a nuisance to bring your laptop and camera in your carry on luggage but it really is worth it.  The last thing you want is to risk them getting ruined or even lost in the hold.  You can even entertain yourself with a movie downloaded on your laptop or do a bit of work while you're away.

As we have already mentioned, planes have strong air conditioning and whilst it can be a blessing when you are all hot and bothered, it can also make you feel cold.  Rather than complaining, it's easier for you to cover yourself up with a shawl or scarf, if you bring one with you.  You'll be glad you did.

Some of the new planes have USB ports to charge your electronic devices but most don't.  If your phone or Kindle run out of power, you will have wished you had brought a portable power bank with you or you will be happy you did bring one!  It takes up minimal room and everything stays charged - happy days!

Strong and offensive body odor or personal hygiene issues may prompt complaints from fellow passengers, leading to removal from the flight.  Whilst not a security breach, would you be happy being stuck next to a pungent smelling person for many hours?

Disputes over whether window shades should be open or closed have escalated into actual physical altercations, leading to removal from the flight.  If you think this is over the top, we can tell you it's not unusual at all and happens fairly regularly.

94. Refusing to put away musical instruments

Musicians refusing to comply with storage instructions for their instruments have faced removal, particularly if their behavior causes disruption.  No one minds a quick tune on the saxphone or flute before take off but any more is annoying and unnecessary.

95. Throwing coins into the plane engine for good luck

Some passengers who are under the mad illusion that it is acceptable, are influenced by superstitions and have, unbelievably, thrown coins into the plane's engine as a gesture of good luck, leading to arrests and delays in the plane taking off - leaving them anything but lucky!

Passengers engaging in inappropriate and very intimate behavior on the plane, often in restrooms, may face removal and legal consequences.  Besides that, there is hardly room for one person to get in there, let alone two.  I don't wish to think about it!

This is thankfully, very rare but not totally unheard of.  There have been cases of intoxicated passengers attempting to open cabin doors during the flight which will usually trigger emergency protocols and lead to their immediate removal and arrest upon landing.

Of course it is illegal but despite obvious strict no-smoking policies, an odd passenger  has been caught smoking on the plane, leading to removal and potential legal action.  It's usually passengers who have had too much alcohol to drink who are the main culprits.

Passengers who refuse to stay seated during critical phases of the flight, such as take off or landing, may face removal for endangering themselves and others.  Again, it's usually those intoxicated that refuse to play by the rules and ruin it for the other travelers.

Non-compliance with electronic device regulations, such as refusing to turn off a smartphone or tablet during take off, has led to passengers being removed from flights.  Being stubborn will do them no favors as they are arrested when the plane lands.
