13 Mixed Pictures From Being An 80s Kid

By Josh King 1 year ago

1- Pacers

I can actually remember how these tasted! I think I ate a packet every day... hence why I have so many fillings! Unfortunately, the production was cut in the 80s so they're not about anymore and all we have are the memories. They were originally known as Opal Mints, which is another memory we'll all have. Who remembers when Starburst were known as Opal Fruits?

2- Smash Hits

This was a great pop magazine, it was very popular in the 80s, I loved this mag! My walls were covered with posters... the good old days! The magazine, aimed at the kids, was released every other week and even had its own TV channel! It was first made in 1978 and ran all the way to 2006. There are still a few one-off editions made, like in 2009 they made a special tribute version to Micheal Jackson.

3- One Pound Note

I remember feeling quite rich if I had five of these in my purse! They were first released in 1978 and withdrawn in 1988 so they were only there for 100 years. Remember the excitement when the pound coins first came out? Everyone went crazy for them!

4- Fruit Sherbet

Do you remember these fruit shapes with sherbet inside? They had very little sherbert in them and let's face it, the only reason we got them is because they were in little plastic fruit. Did you fill them up with water after you ate the sherbet? Of course you did.

5- Walkman

Image result for discmanThese were big in the 80s, you couldn't walk down the street without seeing people wearing them! They were the first form of portable music players we had and are
so
80s. It reminds me of the film 'Footloose' with Kevin Bacon. The original Walkman was released in 1979 and turned an average jog into an opportunity to listen to some tunes, and the long walk into work so much easier. It caused cassette sales to boom, but it's a shame that CDs completely took over.
It remains one of the only music players to have two audio ports so you could listen to something with your friends too! All you needed was another set of headphones. After the Walkman came the Discman, which was the same thing but for CDs and they were everywhere too.

6- Hart to Hart

This programme was great, remember the dog's name? This was Sunday TV in the 80s! We used to all love following their global adventures trying to solve cases. It was on our TVs for a full 5 series between 1979 and 1984 and was a serious favourite among a lot of people. We used to love how involved they ended up getting when trying to solve cases, a true classic.

7- TV In The 80s

We actually had to get up and turn the TV channels ... Kids today will never know how annoying that was! Thank God for remote controls! In most families, there was one designated person to do it and that was normally because everybody else was too lazy to actually get up out of their seat. Sometimes there was just one person who chose to sit really close to the telly too and obviously they were in charge of it.

8- Take Hart Gallery

Did your picture ever get shown? I so wished mine would... but it never was. It was on TV from 1973 to 1983 and was the birthplace of everybody's favourite Plasticine character 'Morph'. It was basically the early Art Attack for anyone who never enjoyed this show in their youth, and they even did the huge large-scale artworks on the TV studio floor.

9- School Pencil Sharpener

I remember the teacher always had one of these on her desk... great memories! You'd go up with a full pencil and come back with half of one! If it wasn't on the teacher's desk then it was a good chance to have a gossip with your classmates when you couldn't be bothered with your work. I used to go over with about 10 pencils and be stood there for ages just to waste time.

10- Potato Puffs

These always remind me of the school tuck shop because that's where I would buy them from. They need to bring these back! They were the yummiest snack ever invented and it's a real shame they're no longer everywhere. They truly were fluffy pillows of delight! Unfortunately, they're not made anymore and Burton's only make sweet biscuits now.

11- This horse

Did you have one of these in your house? They were absolutely everywhere and a lot of people had multiple of them around their home. A lot of the ceramic horses and carts are on eBay and can fetch a decent amount as they're deemed collectable and antique.

12- Poddington Pea's

This was one of the best animated shows of the 80s and I'm sure you all remember the themes song if you watched it! The theme song was peas 'down at the bottom of the garden'.

13- Stretch Armstrong

This was one of the best toys of the era. Everyone had one of these when we were younger and everyone got one for Christmas. The simplest toys were always the best and they provided tons of entertainment. I played with mine for hours. Looking at it now, how was that even possible?
