1. Ararat Lunatic Asylum, Australia

Today, Ararat Lunatic Asylum is known as Aradale, and is a retreat for a wine school. But when it opened in 1867 it was the largest asylum in all of Australia, featuring some bizarre and horrifying methods of treatment. Throughout its time as a functioning mental health “care” facility, Ararat housed tens of thousands of patients.

2. Tranquille Sanatorium, Canada

Tranquille Sanatorium began its life as a ranch before the owners began caring for tuberculosis patients. It eventually closed in 1995. Around that time, there were reports of mysterious floating orbs throughout the facility. There have also been reports of strange voices, including a nurse who a patient allegedly murdered.

This hospital is located in Australia and is known as Tolga Bat Hospital, and cares for a huge variety of bats. Staff care for the bats from birth, and try to set them free in the wild once they’ve been rehabilitated properly. It’s now home to over 1,400 different species of bats, and is open to the general public. We want to go!

What started off as a stately home was transformed into a hospital during World War I and World War II. The house was eventually abandoned, but it’s now rumoured to be home to the ghost of a little girl. She usually appears at exactly 4.30am in the morning. It’s said that she was a servant that was killed by the original owner of Nocton Hall.

In 1913, Australia’s very first doll hospital opened to repair repairing damaged dolls for children and enthusiasts. It was especially popular during World War II, and was made up of a skilled team of over 70 workers. It’s actually still open to this day, and is run by the grandchildren of the original owners.

Royal Hope Hospital was a Spanish military hospital from 1784 to 1821, before eventually being demolished. A replica of the original hospital was later built to house the wounded during the Seminole War. When workers were trying to repair some water lines, they discovered the hospital had been built on an old Native American burial ground!

Edogawa Hospital might look like your standard hospital on the outside- but inside, it’s a different story. The staff at the hospital are aware of just how uncomfortable (and scary!) these environments can seem, especially to children. So they’ve made an effort to make the décor much more exciting and homely!

Sai Ying Pun is known as the High Street Ghost House It was rumoured to have been an execution hall by Japanese soldiers during World War II before it was used to treat mentally ill patients. During the 1970s, there were a LOT of reports of supernatural activity, including spooky footsteps and visions of a man bursting into flames. The hospital is now used as a community centre.

This is a really cute one. Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin, Texas has been called “breath-taking” thanks to its amazing facilities. It has a giant guitar in the main lobby, an interactive donor wall, and assorted artwork with “healing power”, as well as a huge garden, waterfall, outdoor movie theatre, and human sundial! The hospital also has a train-themed for their Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders Program area.

Old Changi Hospital has become known as one of the most haunted sites in all of Singapore through the years. At the time it was built, it served as the Royal Air Force Hospital and was later used by Japanese soldiers as a prison camp. So it’s no surprise that there are regular ghost sightings in this now-abandoned building.

This hospital stands out from the crowd thanks to its super unusual design. With ornate gold roofs. It’s regarded as one of the most beautiful hospitals in the world! Its also been voted as one of the very best hospitals for children on the planet thanks to its cancer treatment figures, which have pushed up the survival rate of childhood cancer from 20% to over 80%.

Similar to Aradale, Severalls Hospital in Colchester, England operated as a mental hospital, and brutally mistreated patients. It didn’t actually close down until the early 1990s, and it’s sat empty ever since. It’s been heavily vandalised and is said to be the home of several ghosts, who live in the mortuary of the building.

The Athens Mental Hospital, located in Athens, Ohio, opened its doors back in 1874 and stayed in operation until 1993. Even today, the hospital is known for its mystery; any information about past patients is kept under tight wraps, with special permission needed from the state of Ohio to gain access.

This one’s pretty cool. This centre provides oxygen-focused healthcare, as well as beauty and dental treatments. With a massage area, swimming pool, fitness room, Jacuzzi, and over 20 specialists providing oxygen therapy, it’s a huge hit with both patients and tourists. And we can definitely see why!

, which is a story and colouring made especially for the hospital. The ground floor of the hospital is home to the “Rushing River Valley,” while the third floor is the “Enchanted Forest”. How cute.

This hospital has a pretty terrifying history. One of Taunton State Hospital’s most famous patients was Jane Toppan, a serial killer who confessed to having murdered at least 31 people while working as a nurse. And apparently the staff were a whole lot worse… They didn’t treat the patients particularly well, and are even rumoured to have been involved in satanic cults.

Venezuela’s hospitals are some of the worst in the world. The country has been seriously struggling with its hospital crisis over the years, and the pandemic has now made conditions even worse. Patients are struggling to get a bed in the hospital, and even when they do, the wards have hardly any staff.

This hospital is absolutely crammed with cool stuff; it has a saltwater fish tank, supplied by SeaWorld, on the ground floor. There are also plenty of animal-assisted activities, which bring in trained dogs that visit poorly children. The hospital also has two rooftop terraces, which include obstacle courses and pathways to explore.

Beechworth was a sister hospital to Ararat in Australia, and it was just as horrifying. There were reports of mysterious deaths and disappearances at Beechworth. Considering it had a lab for patient experimentation, it’s not all that surprising. Ghost and murder tours now take place at Beechworth on a regular basis.

Known for its greenery, this hospital is pretty unique to say the least. It was constructed using eco-friendly materials, as well as energy-efficient glass to enhance the heating and cooling systems. But the crowning glory of the hospital is two terraces that are home to 2,500 plants and a cute little greenhouse!

Whittingham Hospital opened in 1873 and grew to be the largest mental hospital in Britain. During the time it was open, it was hit with controversy and complaints of mistreatment in two male and two female wards in the St Luke’s division, with the worst being in “Ward 16” for women. An investigation took place, and both the Head Male Nurse and the Matron took ‘early retirement…

Ranked as the number two hospital in the world, Cleveland Clinic Fairfield really does look after its patients properly. There are expert doctors and specialists, and the facilities are as state-of-the-art as they can get! It’s also the first hospital in the world that started performing heart bypass surgery.

This hospital has won a fair few awards for its design, including the Best Sustainable Hospital Design Award in 2009 and Best Healing Environment in 2013. Impressive stuff. Clemenceau Medical Center has a super-cool exterior design, and there are a fair few palm trees thrown in for good measure. 10/10!

24. Beelitz-Heilstätten Hospital, Berlin

This one isn’t quite so inviting. The Beelitz-Heilstätten Hospital is said to be haunted by the patients who passed away there. It also happens to be the same hospital that housed Hitler during his recovery from injuries he’d received during World War II, which adds to the hospital’s terrifying reputation.

The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia is no ordinary children’s hospital. It has an amazing public aquarium with three sharks and around 40 fish species, as well as a meerkat enclosure! There are also cute little art exhibitions to entertain the kids. We think there should be a hospital like this for adults too…

Not only does this hospital have a slick exterior design, but it also has some pretty impressive interiors too. Each department has a different look, which has been designed with all things eco-friendly. The hospital has won the Best International Design from the Building Better Healthcare Awards.

Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Kentucky was originally opened to treat tuberculosis patients but the majority of the treatment didn't work out. The rate of deaths increased enormously, so much so, that they had to build an underground tunnel to bury the bodies. Ghost hunters report seeing shadowy figures in and around the abandoned hospital.

As far as unique design concepts go, this one is pretty out there! The Winnie Palmer Hospital might seem like a hotel when you first look at it, but apparently, it’s been designed this way to make it easier for staff and patients to move around the hospital. This facility is now one of the most recognised buildings in Orlando.

It might not look so scary these days, but Denver Lunatic Asylum used to have a bit of a reputation. Overcrowding was so severe that patients would pass away unnoticed, and those that were treated by staff were subject to brutal mistreatment. The horror stories of past patients were eventually used for the Hollywood movie Session 9.

This one doesn’t even look like a hospital! The grand building of Marian Regional Medical Center, in Santa Maria, California was designed by expert architects to make it look, well, less like a medical centre, so it wouldn’t put patients off attending. The staff are reported to be pretty spectacular too.
