Signs You’re Not Looking After Your Skin And Hair

1. You're Getting More Breakouts On Your Skin

Image Source / WikipediaThere are a lot of reasons you can suffer breakouts, even if you take good care of your skin, like hormones. But if breakouts are becoming more regular, it can be a sign that you're not keeping your face clean enough, or maybe using the wrong skincare products for an oily skin type.

2. You're Towel Drying Your Hair

Most of us give our hair a rough dry with the towel when we get out of the shower, but did you know it could actually be damaging your hair? When you roughly use a towel it could lead to compromising the hair cuticles, which can result in breakage. It's better to pat your hair with the towel rather than vigorously rub.

3. Your Skin Is Stinging

If you're experiencing burning and stinging skin, this is a key sign something is wrong. It could be that you're using the wrong skincare products which are irritating your skin, or it might be something else that your skin has reacted badly to.

4. You Don't Pay Attention To Harsh Ingredients In Haircare Products

This is worse if you use a high amount of different products on your hair. A lot of products will contain harsh chemicals which might cause long-term damage to your hair, and if you're using these products day after day and noticing your hair is looking damaged, it could be that.

5. You Have Very Dry Skin

Dry skin can be very difficult to deal with, and it can often be a result of you not taking proper care of your skin's condition. You may have naturally dry skin, or have been failing to moisturize properly. You may even be exfoliating too much, thinking that you're taking care of your skin when you're actually drying it out.

6. You're Washing Your Hair Every Day

Surely you can't be
too
clean, right? Well, actually, washing your hair too much can actually be a bad thing. If you're washing your hair every single day, you might be stripping your hair of natural oils that work to keep your hair healthy, so this could be the reason your hair is looking a little dull.

7. Your Skin Is A Lot Oiler Than It Usually Is

If you don't usually suffer with oily skin but now find that it's suddenly become oily, it could be a sign you're not properly caring for it and using the wrong products for your skin type. If you're stripping away the barrier on your skin through harsh products, your skin can react by producing more oil.

8. You're Using Too Much Heat On Your Hair

Excessive heat every single day on your hair is going to cause a lot of damage over time. You may even risk burning it if you're using items like straighteners which are far too hot. If you're using hair dryers, hair straighteners or hair curlers every single day, make sure to turn down the heat settings a little and use heat-protection sprays.

9. Your Skin's Pigmentation Has Changed

If you're finding that you suddenly have dark spots or freckles on your skin when you usually don't have any, this is a sign that you might not be protecting your skin against the sun well enough. It could indicate that you need to use stronger sunscreen.

10. Never Getting Your Hair Cut

If you're trying to grow your hair out, or maybe just too lazy to go get it cut, this could be compromising your hair. Even if you're taking care of it every other way, uncut hair can be less healthy, as regularly trimming can help your hair to grow in a healthier way and look tidier.

11. You're Dehydrated

If you're never drinking enough water, this is going to have a negative effect on your skin (as well as the rest of your body). Hydration and drinking water will encourage a healthier body and skin, and can help your skin to look improved.

12. You Have Split Ends

Split ends are very easy to spot, and a clear sign of damage to your hair. The hairs around your face, such as by your ears or if you have a fringe, are more likely to show evidence of split ends because you touch the hair there more frequently. If you have split ends, it could be because you're not taking care with heat products, chemical products or weather changes.

13. Your Skin Is Red

Facial redness can come as a result of rough skin, itching, sun exposure or even acne or rosacea. If your skin is very sore, swollen and red, it could be a sign you're not doing something right with your skincare routine, such as failing to wash properly, or it could even be what you're eating and drinking, like alcohol.

14. Your Hair Is Dull

If your hair is damaged and you're not taking care of it properly, it's more likely that it will look dull and plain rather than shiny and voluminous. The natural shine of your hair should come out if you're taking proper care of it, so hair that looks more on the dull side - even after washing - is a tell-tale sign of damage.

15. Your Skin Is Peeling

If your skin is peeling, it could be an indication of skin conditions or general dry skin. Both require you to take proper care of your skin with a dry skin routine, so if your skin is itching, flaky and peeling, it's a sign that it needs more care and attention!

16. Your Hair Feels Rough And Brittle

When you run your fingers through your hair, does it feel sleek and soft or rough and brittle? If the latter, it could be a sign that your hair is unhealthy and damaged. It may need a better haircare and conditioning routine to retain moisture.

17. Signs Of Aging Are Very Obvious

All skin will show signs of aging, but most people will adopt a good skincare routine which tackles signs of aging and helps you to look younger for longer. If you're finding that signs of aging are very pronounced, like lines and wrinkles, it's a hint that maybe your skincare routine could be better.

18. Your Hair Looks Flat

We don't mean after you've had the straighteners on it. This is more to do with your hair's elasticity and its ability to - literally - bounce back. If you pull your hair out straight and it lies flat even after you've let go without bouncing back to its original shape, it's a sign you don't have the healthiest hair!

19. You're Seeing No Changes To Your Skin After A New Skincare Routine

There may be a chance that you're not looking after your skin in the right way, even if you're trying to. With skincare, this could be because you're using completely the wrong products or taking the wrong steps. If you're seeing no improvement or change whatsoever after a while of one particular routine, it could be a sign it's the wrong one.

20. Your Hair Is Particularly Dry

Dry hair doesn't necessarily mean damaged, but it is an indication you need to take extra steps to protect it. Your hair could be dry because of being out in the sun all day, for example, in which case a hat might help. If your hair is extremely dry, a good test can be to use conditioner. If it's still dry, there's an unhealthy underlying cause.

21. You're Always Touching Your Face

If you constantly have your hands on your face, resting your chin on your hand or rubbing, then you're constantly risking transferring bacteria and germs from your fingers to your face. This means you aren't taking the best precautions to prevent germs getting on your skin!

22. Your Hair Is Always Tangled

We don't mean after you've just woken up or after you've washed it. If your hair is generally tangled all day every day and very difficult to brush, it's a sign that it's not being taken care of properly and has become damaged.

23. You're Always Popping Your Spots

One surefire way to make sure you're not properly caring for your skin is to pop all your spots constantly. Not only are you risking making your spots worse, but you're also transferring the germs from your fingers to your face when you're picking and squeezing!

24. You're Noticing Hair Thinning Or Hair Loss

Everyone loses a few hairs in the shower or when they brush, but if you're noticing a large amount coming out when you wash or brush, it may be an indication it's more unhealthy than it should be. Try to switch up your haircare and if you're still experiencing excessive hair loss, you might want advice from a healthcare professional.

25. Your Skincare Routine Is The Same All Year Round

If you're not altering your skincare routine to change with the seasons, then you're most likely not doing the best you can for your skin. When the weather changes, especially when it gets colder, you need to work harder to keep your skin hydrated and protected against the elements.

26. You're Using Too Many Harsh Dying Products

Most people dye their hair at one time or another, but if you're constantly using harsh dying products on your hair, you probably aren't doing it any favours. Especially if you're using harsh bleach to change to bright colours and constantly switching up your hair colour regularly.

27. You Suddenly Have Small White Bumps

Small white bumps on your face aren't normal spots, as they can likely be something called milia. Milia can develop if you're doing something wrong with your skincare routine, such as using the wrong moisturiser (like a body moisturiser rather than one specifically for your face).

28. You Never Wash Your Hair (Or Not Often Enough)

While washing your hair every day can actually be bad for your hair, not washing it enough can cause problems, too. Giving your natural hair oils chance to breathe is a good idea, but if you're barely washing your hair at all, you're risking dirt and oil build up that can become dirty and smelly.

29. You Aren't Using Any Skincare Products Whatsoever

You don't have to use a 50+ list of skincare products to take care of your skin, as it all depends what your particular skin needs - and in this day and age, skincare can be overwhelming. But if you're failing to use anything - simply washing your face with soap and water - you could be failing to care for it properly, especially when it comes to moisturising.

30. Your Hair Just Doesn't Look Good

You know your own hair best, and if it just never looks good no matter what you do - such as frizzy, messy, dirty, flat or damaged - chances are you aren't taking care of it in one way or another. Neglect can often cause your hair to look lifeless.
