This Is What Happens To Your Body When You Don’t Wear Deodorant For A Year

By Carole 2 years ago

1. You'll Get Body Odor

Image source redditThe main purpose of wearing deodorant is to mask the smell of sweat.  You may think you don't perspire so don't need to wear it.  After all, you're only in the office and not running around.  Well, everyone sweats.  It's part of our bodily functions.

2. Sweat Can Build Up Bacteria In Your Armpits

If you're not wearing either deodorant or antiperspirant and you're rushing out the door, then those sweat glands may become more active.  In other words, they can cause sweat beads under your arms which leads to a bacteria build-up.

3. This Bacteria Can Give You Rashes

The combination of moisture from sweat and the build-up of bacteria can result in a bacteria related rash, including impetigo.  This can be quite painful but is incredibly itchy and can spread to other parts of the body that you touch after you've been scratching.

4. Wear Deodorant At Least Once A Day

Experts say you should apply a deodorant or antiperspirant once a day at least.  That would apply if you aren't exercising or exerting yourself to the extent where your heart rate increases.  In these cases, it's a good idea to re-apply to stay fresh.

5. Apply Deodorant After Your Shower

Dermatologists recommend applying deodorant after your shower.  Your armpits will already be spotless and bacteria free from washing.  Make sure the area is absolutely dry before spraying or rolling on the product, using either scented or unscented, whichever you prefer.

6. The Difference Between Deodorant And Antiperspirant

If you tend to sweat a lot, consider an antiperspirant as opposed to deodorant because this will stop you from sweating, whereas a deodorant will mask the odour but still cause you sweat patches, very unsightly and off-putting .

7. Putting It On Immediately After Shaving

After shaving, your skin may be irritated and more sensitive so putting on deodorant straight after you've smoothed your pits could make them sting or irritate them, making them itchy.  Wait at least an hour to reduce this risk.

8. Only Using It On Your Underarms

While it's obvious to use deodorant underneath your arms, it can also be used in other places, especially during the hotter months of the year.  Applying it behind the knees or on the inner thigh area will prevent chaffing and keep you as fresh as a daisy.  It's a win, win!

9. Putting It On After You've Started Sweating

Of course you can use deodorant once you've started perspiring but it might be too late to mask your natural scent.  Follow our earlier advice and put it on sooner rather than later, so straight after your shower, when you've thoroughly dried the armpits.

10. Choosing A Strong Scent

The majority of toiletries we use are scented (unless the choice is made to purchase unscented).  That means  your body wash, shampoo and moisturiser all have their own scent, which can be quite a mixture.  Choose a deodorant to compliment those smells rather than overtake them.

11. Wearing Too Much

You can wear too much deodorant.  It's quite normal to spray double the amount in the evening, before a night out in a crowded bar or club but you are just wasting it.  Once the first 2 or 3 sprays have been absorbed into your skin, the rest will sit on the surface, causing deodorant marks on your clothes.

12. How To Get It Off Clothes

So that leads us to the question of how you can remove those deodorant marks from your clothes, probably because you've applied too much of it. Try rubbing gently with a pair of tights a nylon is the perfect material for that purpose.

13. Aluminium In Deodorants - Innocent Or Harmful

Aluminium compounds are widely used in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products.  Aluminium salts are the ingredients in antiperspirants that prevent sweating.  It is true that this compound can build up in breast tissue but experts report that breast cancer tissue contains no more aluminium than normal breast tissue.

14. Parabens In Deodorants

Parabens are chemical compounds found in antiperspirants and they prevent fungi, bacteria and yeast from growing on the deodorant.  They can be absorbed through the skin but the amount present in the product is so small that it would not contribute towards breast cancer.

15. What Could Cause Allergies?

Some people have allergic reactions to deodorants or antiperspirants and research has indicated that this could be caused by ingredients such as propylene glycol which is the chemical that gives a deodorant stick its shape.

16. Scented Deodorant

There are some lovey subtle scents available with many deodorants and if you buy them in sets with a matching body lotion, you are going to smell gooood!  However, some people are allergic to the perfume so luckily there are unscented ones on the market.  You can even become allergic to one after using it for years previously with no issues.

17. Alcohol In Antiperspirants

Many antiperspirants contain alcohol and this is used to dissolve different ingredients and also to help the product dry quickly when applied.  If you have very sensitive skin, you may be better with just the deodorant so as to avoid an irritation.

18. Do More Chemicals Enter The Body After Shaving?

The short answer is no, according to the American Cancer Society. There isn't enough evidence to support the link between how frequently someone shaves under their arms and the chance of getting breast cancer.  The chance that the chemicals cause changes to the breast tissue is extremely low.

19. Why Are Most Breast Cancers Near The Armpit?

Most breast cancers grow in the upper outer part of the breast which is not far from your armpit.  It may be because the tissue in this area is denser.  The issue with dense breast tissue is that it makes it more difficult for the doctor to see abnormal or cancerous tissues on a mammogram.

20. Do Antiperspirants Keep You from Sweating Out Toxins That Can Cause Cancer

Expert Dr Chan says, 'Your body does need to get rid of cancer-causing toxins but that’s not done through sweating.  Filtering toxins is done by your kidneys and liver, which remove toxins from your body by helping to produce urine or faeces. Using antiperspirant to stop sweating shouldn’t affect your body’s ability to rid itself of toxins.

21. What Is Natural Deodorant?

The natural deodorant market is very popular and growing larger all the time.  These include aluminium-free products.  Conventional deodorants contain harsher ingredients whereas natural deodorants are kinder to the skin.

22. Benefits Of Natural Deodorant

In a nutshell, natural deodorants allow you to sweat the way your body naturally does.  Antiperspirants that contain aluminium block the  sweat glands to help reduce underarm moisture. Natural deodorants don't stop you from sweating but do help decrease unwanted odour.

23. Best Natural Deodorants

It's a good idea to choose a natural deodorant which contains coconut oil as this can help stop bacteria growing.  Don't laugh but baking soda and corn starch, mixed with other natural ingredients, have proved to be a good scent masker!

Unless you have particularly sensitive skin, you can use Isopropyl alcohol as a deodorant and it can be incredibly effective.  It is naturally antibacterial so will kill off the germs that cause body odour.  It's also very cheap.  Simply pour the solution into a small spray bottle and use as you would any other deodorant.

25. 48 Hour Deodorants

These long lasting deodorants are actually no stronger than normal ones.  The secret to their 48 hour longevity is the way that various gums and waxes are formulated formulated to resist being washed or rubbed off the skin.

26. Roll On Or Spray?

The main difference between spray deodorants and roll-ons deodorants is the packaging.

When used correctly, both products can be effective against sweat and body odour.  Advantages of a roll-on is it can last longer than the spray so works out cheaper and is also easier and smaller to pack in your luggage!

27. Are Men's Deodorants Stronger Than Women's?

28. Is It Safe For Kids To Use Deodorants?

When children enter puberty and are aware of their bodies, they may ask to wear deodorant.  As they could be as young as 9 or 10, this might be worrying for the parent.  Deodorants are safe for your kids to use when they're ready and some brands make one that is specially formulated for younger wearers.

29. Does Deodorant Have A Shelf Life?

Deodorants usually expire within 1 to 3 years after purchase.  There will be a date listed on the back or bottom of the label.  Whilst the effectiveness of the product may not be effected after this date, the scent may deteriorate.

30. Accidentally Inhaling Deodorant Spray

This is easily done and the worst that usually happens is that you will be left with a funny taste in your mouth if you keep it open!  Of course, all aerosols should be kept out of reach of children.  If you are worried about this, why not use a roll-on deodorant instead.
