Check Out These Foods Under A Microscope

By Anna Collins 1 year ago

1. Shrimp tail

If you did not know that this was in fact a shrimp tail (magnified 70 times), I definitely think the majority of us would think that this was the close up of feathers on a bird - perhaps a chicken. It does not make it look appetising, that's for sure.

2. Cake sprinkles

How cool and fun do these look, like colourful balls or some fantasy space scene. It's actually cake sprinkles! Cake sprinkles in general are fun, but it turns out that cake sprinkles are even more fun when they've been magnified around
one hundred times
.

3. Blueberry

This is the top of a blueberry, the part where the fruit attaches to its stem. The folds show the little frays on the top of the fruit. But magnified this much, everything looks so huge that it's hard to imagine that this is the picture of the little blueberry fruit we all know.

4. Chocolate cake

Who knew that chocolate cake could every look so unappealing? We all love chocolate cake, but the majority of us would not look at this image and be tempted to take a bite. The white part of the photo are some sugar grains and the whiteness of the chocolate is where the flour hasn't properly mixed.

5. Strawberry

How satisfying does this look? It looks so tactile - you just want to reach out and touch it. It looks like play-doh, as though you could touch it's squidgy surfaces. If you think about how small strawberry seeds are, this puts into perspective how close up this image really is.

6. Red onion

I don't know what this even looks like, but what you wouldn't think is a red onion! Of course, once you know, it's easier to identify with the characteristic red, ridged skin that is peeling slightly. This red onion has been magnified by
30 times
on the camera lens.

7. Sugar grains

So apparently sugar grains zoomed in to the extreme look more like tumbled blocks of concrete or like a collection of ice cubes. These sugar grains have been magnified
35 times
, making their appearance completely distorted and they look almost unrecognisable.

8. Star anise

Star anise is a kind of spice that is used in cooking, characterized by its star shape - hence where the name derives from. There's something quite strangely beautiful about this close up image, despite it looking like nothing that is instantly recognizable.

9. red cabbage

If somebody showed you this image and told you that it was folds of purple leather, you'd most likely believe them. On the other hand, being told that this was actually a zoomed in image of a red cabbage would seem much more surprising and unbelievable!

10. Red licorice

In no way, shape or form does this image look like it is a photograph of anything remotely edible. So when you know it's a liquorice it's fairly shocking. It looks kind of like a red blood cell only more solid. Or it looks like it could be a photograph of somewhere on Mars.

11. Banana skin

Try and imagine what the extreme close-up of a banana skin would look like. I bet it looked NOTHING like this photo does. Who would have expected that the smooth surface that we feel when we touch a banana would actually be made up of thousands of little textured bumps.

12. Table salt

This image is very cool and it looks extremely artistic and creative. This is a perspective of table salt magnified by
50 times
. The shapes within the image are also fascinating and the textures within create illusions. If you look closely you can even see the shape of a cat!

13. Oreo

If you didn't already know this was a close-up of an Oreo you would likely assume it was a birds eye view of soil or the earth. But, once you know that it's actually a surface of chocolatey goodness it makes you want to dog right in to the chocolate crumbs.

14. Cauliflower

We LOVE this image of a cauliflower close-up
(magnified 30 times)
. It's basically like looking into a land of strange trees from some kind of fantasy land - as though it's straight from a kid's tv program. Is it possible that a cauliflower can somehow look cute?

15. Fortune cookie

Is this a Google image of part of the earth (maybe a desert) from a distance or is it...a fortune cookie? Really!? As we well know, it is indeed a fortune cookie, yet even knowing this does not make this zoomed-in photograph seem any more identifiable to us.

16. Kiwi seed

Who knew the close up of a Kiwi seed would look so steel like and cold.  It's amazing how zooming in using magnification (way more than our eye could ever be capable of) can create a total illusion and completely change how we see the very same thing.

17. Fried onion

Has anyone been put off eating fried onions after seeing this image? And that's a bold statement, because fried onions on burgers are irresistible. Yet after seeing this there is definitely something kinda repulsive about it. Perhaps it's the strange texture.

18. Coffee bean

Does this look like a tarantulas legs to anybody else? It definitely reminds us of some kind of scary creature, rather than a coffee bean which many of us rely on each and every day to give us that much needed energy boost to get us through the morning.

19. Mint aero

For those of us who love mint chocolate, this image looks completely dreamy. All you want to do is dive right into this huge ball of delicious mint chocolate and tuck right in. It looks even more delicious when it's zoomed in
30 times
if that were even possible.

20. Sun dried tomato

Here is a sun-dried tomato which has been zoomed in by
30 times
. You can see the red skin with the shrivelled and crumples texture of the dried out tomato skin. The color has intensified and looks even more vibrant in the photo than we can see in real life.

21. Raisin

A raisin does look shrivelled and purple to the naked eye. And under a magnifying glass this is intensified massively. It actually created quite a creepy effect. Somehow you can imagine this image being the mouth of a giant spider or something equally as scary...

22. Raw pork

Raw pork isn't a pretty sight at the best of times. But you can definitely see the string like texture in the image which can often be noticed when eating the meat. The fats above and below the meat appear white and are shown as a completely different texture.

23. Pop tart

Pop tarts are a yummy snack, it's basically an undeniable fact. Yet I bet you didn't expect a zoomed in pop tart to look like this. It definitely does not look so delicious here, in fact, if anything it could take away our desire to eat one. We'll never look at one the same way again!

24. Saffron

Saffron is one of the most expensive spices in the world. And if you ever wondered what it looked like if you could see it
50 times
closer than we see in real life, this is it! Saffron as we see it looks red, here we can see that this colour is made up of multiple different colours.

25. Chilli pepper

Here's a birds eye chilli zoomed in so that we can see the seeds in full detail. Seeds as we see them are tiny, yet here we see them as huge. The skin of the chilli looks furry or porous somehow - very unlike the shiny surface that we see on the outside.

26. Chocolate cake mix

Rolls and folds of gooey chocolate. Yes, please. Now this is the kind of food photograph we always want to see. A zoomed in photo of chocolate cake batter. Could it get any better than that? It looks delicious, like a sea of rippling, melted milk chocolate. Yum.

27. Blue cheese

Blue cheese is of course, a moldy cheese, it has green and blue veins of mold running through the cheese. It's perfectly safe to eat unlike many other forms of mold. Yet when we see it under a microscope your realise exactly what you're eating and it doesn't look appetizing.

28. Orange

There's something about fruit, and particularly orange or citrus fruits, that look extremely beautiful when they have been looked at as a close up. The veins in each tiny segment are visible and you can see the light coming through the translucent skin of the orange.

29. Bread

Is it a sponge? Or, is it bread? Yes, it's bread, however, it really would be difficult to tell the two apart. From the
30 times
magnified image you can see just how light and airy bread really is. In fact, half of the texture is made up of air pockets and half is actually the bread.

30. Pasta

Here are a few pieces of ridged, penne pasta seen in a HUGELY close up way. As well as looking like a close up of what it truly is, it also looks very much like a bag of ridged Lays. This magnified image is possibly the least surprising, as the image represents almost exactly what we see with the naked eye.
