Daily Struggles Only Bald People Will Understand

Deciding which hat to wear

People who are bald are faced with a challenging decision every morning while getting ready for the day: which hat should they take with them on their adventures? Choosing what to put on your head may be a huge fashion struggle due to the wide variety of alternatives, which range from fashionable fedoras to baseball caps and beanies. Of course, they can also choose to not wear one at all!

Taking sunscreen everywhere you go

Let’s be honest; bald heads and sunny weather is never going to end well! The use of sunscreen becomes a daily need in order to minimize the obvious danger of catching the sun massively on their head. As such, there’s a precious daily responsibility of shielding that sparkling dome from the damaging effects of UV radiation. That means a lot of money spent on sunscreen.

Being attacked by the wind

The bald population can attest to the fact that even the slightest breeze may feel like someone is hitting them on the head. On a day when the wind is blowing strongly, even a walk in the park may become an accidental experiment in aerodynamics. People with hair might have to face the fact that the wind will probably mess it up, but bald people don’t get away from the wind either.

The struggle of sunglasses

To keep sunglasses in place on a bald head is like trying to keep a ping pong ball balanced on top of a watermelon; it's an uphill fight that never seems to end. They seem to fall off with each turn! Now, of course there are some sunglasses alternatives that have been modified to help them stay up, but that just limits the choice of having a fashionable pair of sunglasses.

Is hat hair still a thing?

Hat hair isn’t something you think about when a bald person wears a hat, but you’ll be surprised at how much this can affect their head. Putting on a hat might provide them with a whole new set of problems to solve. When it is removed, it may show a scalp that is depressed, perspiring excessively, and just plain uncooperative; this is the typical instance of hat hair gone awry.

A chilly scalp

During the winter months, when most people are wrapping themselves in layers of clothing, those who are bald are forced to contend with the uncomfortable effects of a cold scalp. In the absence of the natural insulation provided by hair, wearing warm headgear becomes an imperative must. That means while people with hair don’t necessarily have to think about wearing a woolly hat, bald people do.

An array of nicknames!

Over the course of their lives, people who are bald are likely to have heard a wide variety of humorous nicknames, such as Mr. Clean, Lex Luthor, Kojak, and a multitude of others. It's all in good fun at the bald pride club, where we support one other through it all! But often these names have followed them through their entire lives, and it’s just not funny anymore. Move on!

Some bizarre tan lines

Sunburns are very likely to occur on bald heads, and when they do, the resulting tans frequently have some odd patterns. Providing an explanation for why your scalp looks like a patchwork quilt made of sunburned and pale skin may be a conversation starter all on its own. This isn’t something that people with hair after think about, and is very much a daily struggle for bald people.

Thinking about how to step things up a notch

When you're bald, getting dressed up for a formal occasion takes on a whole new meaning for you. To make up for the loss of hair, the focus moves to the facial hair, the grooming skills, or the ability to accessorize with a fashionable tie or scarf. Everyone wants to reinvent their look and stand out from the crowd, but the lack of hair gives bald people less ways of being able to change their look.

Shaving accidents!

It's possible that even bald people may find themselves in the precarious region of shaving accidents at some point in their lives. If you cut off a little bit more than you wanted to, you can wind up with an accidental bald patch or a creatively asymmetrical appearance, or you might miss patches of hair on the head, looking like a half-shaven beaver! It’s especially hard at the back of the head.

The mirror's glare

It is not vanity; rather, it is an admiration! People who are bald have been seen making a double take in front of reflected surfaces only to appreciate the smooth and shining surface of their heads. However, we know that bald heads can sometimes be glossy, and this glossy can cast quite the glare in mirrors and even in photographs too. Many photos have been ruined for bald people!

Caressing their scalps!

Because their scalps are so silky and inviting, they are always fighting the impulse to touch their own heads because it is impossible to ignore. It's easy to get into the relaxing and almost uncontrollable routine of patting your own head. Not only do they have to contend with themselves, but also their acquaintances who want to feel what a bald head feels like. No, no, no!

Serious hair envy

People who are bald sometimes can't help but look at others who have beautiful hair and think, "What I wouldn't give for just a few strands!" Even among the most self-assured balding beauties, there is a phenomenon known as "hair envy." However, it shouldn’t be this way. We should all take pride in how we look, and try to work with what we have, otherwise happiness will be that little bit further away.

Choosing the right pillowcase

For those who have bald heads, silk pillowcases become an absolute need. They make it possible to have a restful night's sleep without experiencing any of the irritating friction that is often associated with having a smooth scalp. This isn’t really something that people with hair have to think about, so they should really count their lucky blessings. A silk pillowcase is 100% the way forward though.

Considering limited options at the barbers

Sometimes, even when there is very little hair left to cut, one will have the hankering for a new haircut regardless of how little there is to trim. It's not about the hair—what matters is the routine you follow to take care of yourself! However, when arriving at the barbers, it’s clear that there’s only limited options available considering the amount of hair on their head, so the main option is to just shave it all off.

An overly shiny scalp

Achieving a healthy shine without making it seem as if you've rubbed your head with cooking oil can be a delicate art form. Finding the exact balance between the two has proven to be quite difficult for bald people, and they often cross the line! A goal that many people strive for on a consistent basis is to achieve the perfect amount of shine, otherwise you’ll be blinding everyone you pass.

Tending to their beard (more often than not)

When there is no hair on top, the beard or mustache becomes the primary focus of grooming efforts. Beard fans take immense satisfaction in the artful maintenance of their facial foliage, which allows them to exhibit their mastery of facial hair. But, when your beard becomes your pride and joy, it takes a lot of maintenance to get it to look fantastic, which is a daily occurrence.

Many staring contests

People have a tendency to let their curiosity get the best of them, which may lead to them sneaking glances or engaging in full-on staring competitions with a bald head. It would seem that bald heads possess a magnetic property that captivates people's attention. However, people just need to start learning not to stare. Heck, we’re all different. Just get over it.

Hats, hats and more hats!

Strangers will often start talks with you regarding your headgear, which may lead to some entertaining exchanges. A straightforward hat has the potential to act as a connector between people, so can often act as a conversation started between a bald person and another person. But there’s so much more to life than just talking about hats, and the conversations can get very boring.

Mastering the art of accepting compliments!

Despite the fact that you did not have a choice in the matter, you have developed the maturity to graciously accept comments on your baldness over the course of time. To be honest, accepting praise for something over which one has no influence might be considered an art form in and of itself. A lot of people think that complimenting bald people will help boost their confidence, but sometimes it can be condescending.

What struggles don't they have to deal with?

Now, we've spoken all about the fact that people who are bald have many daily struggles they have to contend with, but it's easy to think that being bald is not a very good thing... WRONG! People who are bald often love their lack of hair, and there's many reasons other than their shiny head and compliments! There's a lot of things that bald people don't have to contend with, which people with hair do... let's have a look at them, shall we?

Bedhead!

Those who have hair could wake up with an intentionally disheveled bedhead, but for those who are bald, the morning routine is an entirely different tale. They wake up with flawless, naturally smooth scalps since there is nothing to ruffle their hair, which means that bedhead isn’t something they ever really have to consider, which saves them A LOT of time in the mornings.

Bad hair days

People who have hair sometimes complain about having a poor hair day, but for those who are bald, every day is basically a good head day. When your head is already such a natural masterpiece, why do you need hair styling products? This is yet a nothing positive that comes out of having a smooth, rounded head with no hair… it’s not all doom and gloom you know!

The costs of shampoo and conditioner

When it comes to matters of personal cleanliness, bald people surely enjoy huge cost savings when it comes to the purchase of shampoo and conditioner. Their showers are a testimony to cleanliness with a minimalist approach, and there is no need to soap up a mane of hair in order to use them. That means no last minute trips to Walmart when they’ve used the last of the shampoo.

Time and money spent at the barbers

I think most of us can admit that we spend far too much money on our hair, whether that be at the barbershop or hairdressers. We like to look good, and a big part of that is making sure our hair is on form. However, between the hours spent waiting and having our haircut, and the endless dollars it takes, it’s quite an expense, something bald people don’t tend to deal with!

Not having to spend time in the morning doing your hair!

This is like the perfect pro of being bald. Imagine being able to wake up that extra twenty minutes later, spending that time catching up on some much needed beauty sleep, all because they don’t have to tend to their hair in the morning! It seems like the perfectly simple life to live and I’m pretty sure everyone with hair is at least a little bit jealous about this.

Worrying less about appearance

We know that our hair makes up a massive part of our appearance, and when we’re having a bad hair day it can just about ruin our day, or even our week depending on how long the hair is playing up for. But, for bald people, life is all about accepting what you having and making it work for you. While, obviously, they still care about their appearance, they have one less thing to worry about.

No amount of wind or rain can mess up their hair!

We’ve all been there; after spending hours on our hair for an event, and getting it to look just right, we step outside and either the rain or the wind (or even humidity) gets the better of us, and all of a sudden it looks like our hair was never even done in the first place. Now that really is a terrible experience. Luckily for bald people though, it’s not something they ever really have to consider!

They’ll be able to age much better!

Now, this one might not sound like a thing, but really it is. If someone goes bald from a young age, then yes, they might potentially look older than they are. However, one of the biggest notifiers of getting old is a receding hairline. If bald people don’t have hair, that time-teller isn’t there anymore, meaning they technically cling to their youth for much longer than people with hair.

Accepting the life of being bald

In the end, you have come to terms with the fact that you are bald because you see it as a sign of liberation from the never-ending hair-related inconveniences that other people have to cope with. Your skull, which is so shiny and smooth, is one of the things that sets you different and makes you who you are. it's not an easy process, but when you come through the other side you will see that being bald is actually a blessing!

Try to reduce your stress levels!

We know the old saying of 'tearing your hair out' when you're angry or stressed, and the reality is that stress can actually do a number on your hair. The more stressed you are, the more likely it'll be that you're more at risk of hair falling out. So you might want to work on some relaxation techniques!

Think about any nutrient deficiencies you may have

There are certain nutrient deficiencies that can make it more likely for your hair to fall out after weakening it - namely, iron, vitamin and protein deficiencies. So you'll want to make sure to introduce foods rich in iron and a variety of vitamins/proteins (like spinach and seeds) to give your hair a fighting chance!

Get a balanced diet in order

The last point also applies to a wholly balanced diet, which is the best thing you can do for your overall health as well as your hair! You'll want to avoid too many oily foods and switch to protein-rich foods, as well as lots of different varieties of fruit and veg packed with vitamins.

Never brush your hair when it's wet!

We all know it's much more difficult to brush out your hair when it's wet, even if you only have short hair, but you could actually be risking damage to your hair if you're trying to pull a brush through it when it's wet. The excess tugging can actually weaken hair follicles.

You may want to lay off the hair dye

If you frequently use chemical hair dyes on your hair, once every month at least, then over time this can be damaging your hair and may eventually lead to hair falling out. If you do want to color your hair, switch to natural-based hair dyes or find a salon that specializes in non-chemical dyes.

Don't ignore an itchy scalp

An itchy scalp can often be more than just a little bit of dandruff. Sometimes, fungal infections or bacterial infections can cause an itchy scalp, and if these are left untreated, it could lead to hair loss. So if you're suffering from a very itchy scalp, get it seen to sooner rather than later!

Check with your doctor that there's nothing else going on

Certain other conditions, like diabetes, can actually lead to hair loss, too. This is because when you have increased sugar levels in the body, it could contribute to folliculitis (a hair follicle infection) which could then lead to risks of hair falling out. So you might want to check in with your doctor about blood sugar levels if you think that might be an issue.

Book yourself in for regular scalp massages

Massages are about more than just the aches and pains in your muscles! There are a ton of benefits of head and scalp massages, including stimulating healthy hair growth and avoiding hair loss. You can even make sure to spend a few minutes massaging your own scalp at home when you're washing your hair.

Drink plenty of water!

We know, we know, this is age-old advice applicable to everything, but it really does make a difference! Keeping yourself hydrated can actually help with healthy hair growth, because the shafts of your hair are actually made up of around 25% water - so it always helps if you're topping it up!

Keep on top of regular exercise

There are many benefits of exercise in regard to your hair, and one of the main ones is that exercise is a great stress reliever (and as we mentioned, stress doesn't help hair growth!). Not only that, but regular physical activity means that your hormones will be kept balanced, too, which is good news for your hair.

Avoid using too much heat on your hair

Too many heating products used continually can damage your hair, and this is because too much direct heat disturbs protein levels in the strands and could lead to hair loss. Try to avoid curling or straightening your hair - no matter how short - if you don't really need to, or use heat protection products.

Don't sit with a sweaty head

You should always take a shower after a sweaty workout, or even if it's just a hot day. If you're leaving sweat to sit in your hair and on your scalp, then this can lead to hair loss due to the weakening of the hair roots. When washing your hair of sweat, the best choice is also a mild shampoo.

Give natural remedies a try

Natural remedies can be packed with vitamins that you need for healthy hair, and may also have other benefits. Green tea is a good choice for nutrients which specifically help with problems of hair falling out. Biotin is also a great option, which is found in nuts and oats.

You might want to cut down on the booze

If you're a big drinker, then you may want to rethink that if your hair is suffering, because - as we know - alcohol makes you very dehydrated, which in turn can dehydrate your hair (and remember how we spoke about drinking plenty of water!). One of the best ways to protect your scalp is to cut down on alcohol.

Now's the right time to quit smoking!

If you were thinking you could at least enjoy smoking if you cut down on drinking, think again! Aside from the fact it's a good idea to quit anyway, smoking can also prevent a healthy blood flow - which includes blood flowing to the scalp. This can then result in hair not being able to grow properly.

Aloe vera is a great option

Aloe vera has many great uses, and you can even apply aloe vera gel directly to your scalp to help with hair health. Aloe vera is perfect for fighting against infections on the scalp, and it'll also promote more hair growth while it's at it! You can even mix aloe vera in with other hair care products.

Make sure not to skip too many hair wash days!

Be sure to keep up a healthy hair wash routine so that your hair and scalp don't go too long between washes. This will help to keep your scalp and hair clean and limit the risk of infections or bacteria build up, which in turn will help for more healthy hair growth and avoid it falling out!

Switch to a wide-tooth comb

Wide-tooth combs are actually the best kind you can use for brushing your hair, because it will ensure that the brushing process is a lot smoother and avoids tugging on your hair from the root too harshly. Wide-tooth combs are also gentler on your hair when trying to untangle.

Check for thyroid problems

Issues with your thyroid can result in hormone imbalances, which can then affect hair and encourage hair loss. Whether an overactive or underactive thyroid, your hair can be at risk from both. You can speak to your doctor about any suspected thyroid problems and get treatment.
