They told him that a little girl just like the one he described used to live in his house. The ten-year-old girl was called Annalise, who had died of tuberculosis sometime in the late 1800s.

The pointer spelt out the name “Ruth”, which was the name of the girl’s grandma and great auntie, who had both died that year. There was a strange, heavy feeling in the room, and her parents quickly decided to throw the board away.
