Underwear Life Hacks That Women Can Appreciate

By Sarah Smith 2 years ago

Ask yourself: why do you only own one of your favourite pair?

Source: refinery29.comA silly question maybe, but one which only occurred to us this week! Everyone has a favourite pair, right? Just the right coverage, soft, wedgy-proof... Assuming you didn't buy them before the Obama administration, get yourself back to the store and buy more pairs! Now! The same is true of those basics we all need for days we have other things to worry about. Stock up, girl.

Strapless bra hack

Source: Youtube
The fear of that pesky strapless number slipping down is one we can all empathise with. Here's a little hack to put your mind at ease: take one of the removable straps which came with your bra and attach it one side; now, rather then taking it over your shoulder, pull it around the front of your bra, under the cups and attach it to the other side. Ta dah, slip-proof bra!

Comfort is queen

Source: Forbes
Never neglect comfort. Those pairs which look super sexy but get stuck in all the wrong places or cut in just where you don't want... let's face it, they might see the light of day (or neon light of night) for dates, but that's about it. Maybe make sure you have 2-3 pairs which make you feel glam (at a cost), but the rest - stick with comfy. Doesn't mean they don't have to be pretty of course!

Get organised

Source: Live Simply by Annie
Once you've decided that we're right, you'll be amazed the number of pairs you can chuck (and also how many you find stuffed at the back of the drawer which wouldn't function as a dish rag, let alone panties.) Get yourself a good drawer divider and sort however is most helpful to you. Colour, style, material; it's up to you.

Fashion tape hacks

Source: John Lewis
Fashion tape has many useful applications. We've all got a button up blouse which just won't stay closed - a little bit of tape between the offending buttons should do the trick. The same goes for any particularly gaping or revealing dresses or slippy straps. You can also line your bras to keep them fixed.

As a general rule, stick to neutral

Source: Sistain
Let's face it, we all love to strut down the sidewalk with a secret smile because we know we are wearing the fanciest pair of pants we own on a random Tuesday. The thing is, if you've unwittingly paired a bright red lacy number with a pair of beige pants, the dude behind you will also be wearing the same smile... Again, we're not saying ditch the lacy ones, just stick to blacks, whites and skin tones for everyday.

Bra shoulder pads

Source: Amazon
Especially if you are blessed with boobs a tad on the heaver side, those bra straps can be mighty uncomfortable. The good news is, there are solutions out there. Stop those pests cutting into your shoulders by investing in a pair of shoulder pads (not the kind popular in the 80s.) These little cushiony pals will remove the stress and itchy feeling and leave you feeling comfy and confident.

Cheat's nipple-free, braless option

Source: brightside.me
Sure, you can own it, like Jennifer Aniston in 90s "Friends" episodes, or you can head to the store and grab one of these serious looking numbers. Of course, if you're pushed or time, cash or simply can't be bothered, a cotton pad and two plasters will do the trick. Big plasters mind. We'd recommend a hot bath at the end of the night to get them off too...

Keep hold of your old bra pads

Source: IndiaMART
Bra pads are useful for so many things! Once you've worn your bra to death, carefully remove the pads and, after giving them a good clean, use them to dry art or make up brushes, as top class dusters or as extra padding on a big night. Or all three, but definitely wash well in between!

Think about your health

Source: Allexpress
Here are some simple considerations we should all make for the health of our, well, private area. Firstly, and we hope obviously, do not wear a thong while working out. The reasons for this are pretty obvious. Also, day to day try and stick to cotton panties and only wear liners when you need to (for example, you might want to still use them when ovulating, pregnant or after sex. We want you to be comfy!) The will allow the air to circulate better and help keep UTIs, yeast infections and other nasties at bay.

Clip those straps together...

spruce: bright side.me
No need to spend extra dosh on racer back bras for that one, awkwardly cut sleeveless number you love. Using a humble paper clip (a plastic one if you can find one!), simply clip the two straps together. Done! You may want to loosen them slightly first. You can also buy specially made clips for this purpose, but a paper clip will do the job.

Bra extenders

Source: eBay
Just in case you've never come across these, we'd definitely recommend getting your hands on a couple. These nifty little numbers are excellent if you need a little extra wiggle room in your fav bra, but also if you have a snapped clip emergency! Throw a few into your handbag - you won't be sorry!

Avoiding VPLs

Source: phatassvision.com
Ugh. We all have a gorgeous pair of thigh skimming pants or leggings we love but dread moving in, even slightly, for fear of visible panty lines right? Here's the secret, if thongs aren't your thing: you're looking for either seamless, laser-cut or bonded edge briefs. Slip on a pair of those babies and you're good to bend and stretch to your heart's content.

Camel busting toe secret

Source: Fitness/ Exercise
Speaking of things we try our best to avoid... Using a simple hack of wearing two panty liners, one on top of the other, inside your panties, the thickness will keep you camel toe free and ready to party! You might want to slip a spare couple in your bag if you're hitting the club. You might get a bit warm shall we say. Stay fresh, ladies.

Rotate those bras

Source: Adobe Stock
Keeping your best bras in good shape is not the easiest thing. The simplest solution is to make sure you don't over-wear them. It's the frequent washing as much as the wearing which will damage the elastic and padding. Make sure you have at least six or so well fitting, comfy numbers to choose from; it'll really help.

Stop snagging

Source: From Rachel
A complete nightmare: you've put together the perfect ensemble, you arrive at your destination and catch your pantyhose on the door. Clear nail polish is your friend. Dab some on that snag before it gets worse and no one will even notice. You can find tiny bottles in French Manicure sets - nifty handbag size.

Chose the right bra for you, not the mannequin

Source: Everydae
No hack can replace knowing your own body shape and size, let's face it. Barely any of us match the mannequins which stare judgementally down at most linguine shoppers, so own who you are, girl. On the smaller side? Choose push ups, Demis or bralettes. Mediums, go with balconette or Demis. Fuller ladies: plunge brass and full cups of that feeling of comfort and security.

Choose your detergent with care

Source: Wikipedia
Right, this is important. Think about the areas in which your underwear is in constant contact, and you'll understand why the use of harsh detergents is really not a good idea. It can even lead to UTIs if you're really unlucky. Stick with a skin-friendly, preferably anti-septic detergent, even if you save it to wash your undies. Worth. It.

17 Hairspray your tights to prevent runs

Source: Bright Side
If you're really keen to avoid snags or don't have any clear nail polish to hand, a quick spray of your tights with hair spray, once you've finished your hair of course (priorities), will keep them run free! Don't get too close or spray for too long mind, or they'll get crunchy and stick to you.

Further washing hacks

Source: caraselledirect.com
Once you've found yourself the perfect detergent, make sure you have the right kit in which to wash your undies. There's no need to separate your bras and panties if you grab a few mesh laundry bags. These will keep your hooks away from your favourite cami, as well as protecting the delicate fabric. Don't have a laundry bag? No problem, we're assuming you own a pillow case or two? They'll work too!

Sweat busting liner

Source: Amazon
Who knew these were a thing? Not us for sure. They'd have been super helpful during this past, sweltering summer. If you're heading to a festival, these should keep you feeling fresh(er), We reckon they'd also be pretty nifty for that pesky number we've all got which always seems to sit right on your ribs.

Patliners to the rescue (again)

Source: bright side.me
Another reason to keep an extra liner in your handbag. Such a painful thing, being stabbed in the side by your own underwire. But by means of a quick and comfy fix, stick the pad carefully around the rogue wire and away you go. Make sure you cover up all the sticky bits. Ouch.

Fix your misshapen bra pad with a hairdryer

Source: The New York Times
No matter how carefully you wash your undies, there's always one which ends up a bit bumpy. Grab your hairdryer and set the temperature dependent on the thickness of the offending item (the ticker the item, the hotter you'll need.) In just a few minutes, you should see your bra smooth out before your eyes.

Strapless tips

Source: Curvissa
Getting the right fit on a strapless bra is really tricky. We have gathered a few helpful pointers we'd love to share. Firstly, go with bras with the widest band you feel comfortable in, it'll give you the most support. Next, choose a bra one band size down and two cup sizes up form your usual size - this will add extra support when you're not getting it from the normal places. However, don't go too small or your bra may decide your smaller waist is where it wants it be! If in doubt, get measured and try them
all
on.

The simplest one: plan your outfit

Source: chacha-olivia.com
We always struggle to find time to do this in the evening (all that Netflix isn't going to watch itself now, is it?) But if you want to avoid any wardrobe malfunctions, plan your outfit
including
your underwear. Going with low-waisted jeans? For goodness sake, fish out your lowest-waisted panties. As nice as your knicker-elastic is, no one wants to see it. No one you'd want seeing it anyway.

Weights in your hem

Source: Voue India
Not so much an underwear hack but a general, and rather niche, tip from the Princess of Fashion herself, Kate Middleton (newly appointed Princess of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge.) The very notion of the hem of a royal being blown up just doesn't bare thinking about. So, rumour has it, that Kate's seamstress adds tiny weights to the hems of her coats and floatier dresses to avoid such scandal. Ingenious. Shame we don't have our own seamstress. Or any sewing skills. At all.

Keep your bras nice for longer

Source: Pinterest
Hands up who shoves their bras in a drawer? Yeah. We do too. To save you having to hair-dryer them that often, here's an easy, and functional solution. Not only can you see all of your options whilst outfit planning, you can get to them, tangle free and lengthen the life of your bras. Win, win, win. Obviously you can hang them elsewhere, the back of your door is only a suggestion!

Trying on a bra?

Source: The Times
Firstly, make sure you do try before you buy! But while you're doing that, use your hand to check the cup-size. If you can fit your fist into the cup whilst wearing it, it's too big. Two fingers is the sweet spot. All bras loose elasticity, so if that feels a little too tight, it won't for long.

Also

Source: ThirdLove Blog
Speaking of losing elasticity... when trying on your new bestie, make sure you fit it to the loosest setting, to give yourself maximum tightening possibilities in the future. Bras are an investment so, if you can, go for the best made one you can and take care of it. Your back, shoulders and boobs will thank you for it!

Washing sports bras

Source: iStock

This one saves time and money! Did you know that you can get more wear out of your sports bra if you wear it in the shower after your workout and hand wash it while you're in there? It'll more likely be dry and ready to wear the next time you hit the gym and the lack of brutal spin cycles can only be a good thing.

Ignore all of the above

Source: Project hot mess
So you've followed all our advice: you've stocked up on comfy, neutral, carefully-washed, cotton undies with a handbag full of nail varnish and pantyliners... and now it's mid week and you're going to IGNORE ALL OF IT AND WEAR THAT SEXY MATCHING SET, OK? Because sometimes, you just need to feel all that, and you really deserve to x

Sort Through Them

You know those manic days you have when you wake up at 1am and have the sudden urge to clean the house and sort through all your clothes to refresh your wardrobe? Well do the same for your underwear. There's bound to be an old pair at the very bottom with a hole in it that you didn't even know about, so it's always best to check.

Buy Lots More Of The Comfortable Basics

Your extra special undies aren't going to be needed as often as your comfortable basics, so you'll want to make sure that you have a whole load more of those so that you don't have to worry about the only two pairs you own both being in the laundry basket when you need them. Stock up!

Buy Black Or Coloured If You Can

There's nothing wrong with whites or skin-tone, but this one is more a laundry hack. Let's face it - it's very likely you'll have more black, darker or coloured clothes or laundry items than you will white. So if you only have white underwear, you're going to be waiting a while to be able to fill a laundry load without wasting a cycle on just your white underwear and a few bits.

Don't Be Afraid To Get A Bigger Size For Briefs Or Thongs

If you've noticed that you get your normal size for underwear but they're just a tad too tight or riding up just a little, there's nothing wrong with going one size up. This is an obvious no no for bras, which need to be the correct size, but briefs which are a little baggier are only going to be more comfortable!

Why Not Try Men's Boxers?

Image Source / House of Fraser
If you've ever been in a clothes-sharing type of relationship with a guy, chances are you've worn some of his boxers (after stealing his hoody). And we all know that it feels like heaven. There's no wedgies, they fit nice and snug and come further down to give you full coverage. Well what's stopping you from buying some all of your own?

Remember: You Don't Have To Wear A Bra

Image Source / In Touch Weekly
Society has conditioned women to think they have to wear a bra, even when the majority of women will say they hate the things. Unless you have a large bust which means you definitely need that support, why not swerve a bra altogether? The blessed freedom!

But Panties Are Advised

There's nothing wrong with going commando every now and again, but wearing panties is encouraged for health reasons. It's a lot healthier for your downstairs if you have panties as a barrier of protection - otherwise, you could be creating bacteria with your exposed lady-parts with the same pair of pants you're wearing all the time!

Think Carefully About Push Up Bras

A lot of women will go through the journey of experiencing push up bras. They're obviously great for giving that extra lift and making it look like you have a bigger bust, but ultimately, is it worth it? It might mean you're struggling with a tighter, more uncomfortable bra that's pushing up, not to mention you might feel more self conscious when taking it off infront of someone during 'intimate' moments if you feel as though your boobs are smaller than you've been portraying. But at the end of the day, you do you!

You Should Have A Stock Of Period Underwear

Periods are uncomfortable enough without you having to worry about your underwear being uncomfortable too. When you're feeling pretty crappy, bloated and also potentially have to deal with leaks or sanitary pads, then you need to make sure you have underwear up to the task. You may want to opt for bigger briefs with fuller coverage during the time of the month (and make sure you don't only have thongs when the time comes!).

Only Wear Shapewear If It's Comfortable

You shouldn't have to feel uncomfortable and like you can't breathe just to get a smoother silhouette (unless you really, really want to). If you do want shapewear, take the time to shop around to find something that works for you and your outfit. Otherwise, your body's natural shape is beautiful as it is!

Choose Underwear Around Your Outfits And Not The Other Way Around

Image Source / The New York Times
If you have a favourite top, blouse or pair of pants, you don't want to find yourself never wearing them because you realise you can see your VPL or the bra you have is too obvious in your chosen top. Make sure you can always wear the clothes you love by choosing underwear that works better with what you want to wear.

Take A Spare Pair In Hot Weather

It's awful being sweaty when the weather is horrendously hot, and especially when you're trying to work all day in it. And the things that can suffer most are those items right against your skin. Your bra may be damp and smelly or your briefs may feel soaking wet with sweat. It's natural, but it can feel icky. So think about maybe carrying a clean pair in your bag if you can easily change!

Avoid Period Leaks Using Panty Liners

You can use 2 panty liners if you want to avoid period leaks during a particularly heavy flow - you just need to stick the panties to form a letter 'T' in your underwear. For extra protection and comfort, you could also double up both on panty liners and then another pair of panties, too!

Body Shape Counts For The Perfect Underwear, Too

There are certain fashion tips to help you know what type of clothes, shape and design fit your body shape, such as A-line skirts if you want to avoid showing off a pear shape body too much. This kind of styling also works for underwear, too. There'll be certain fits and designs which suit an hourglass figure compared to a rectangle, for instance, so make sure to do your research!

Wear Your Removable Bra Straps The Other Way Around

If you have a bra with removable straps, no doubt you've been wearing them the same way as any other bra: with the adjustable sliders at the back. This way, it's so much easier for you to adjust the length of the strap while you're still wearing it - without having to try bend your arms behind or take it back off!

Underwear That's Too Loose Is Just As Bad As Too Tight

Looser is definitely more comfortable, and you might want to get one size bigger for your panties to make them a little more breathable. But make sure you don't wear underwear that's way too baggy as this will bunch up under your clothes, not give you the proper protection and also cause visible lines.

You Might Feel More Comfortable With High-Waisted Panties

High-waisted pants can be very comfortable, give you extra support and also be a great option if you're someone who has a bit of a belly bulge that they struggle to work around low-rise pants. You can also opt for high-waisted panties to give you a more comfortable way to deal with any bloatedness.

Always Remember To Go With White Or Nude Panties If You're Wearing White Or Light-Coloured Pants

Image Source / Maison et Vie
It's very easy to forget this, and especially if your white/light pants are quite thick in material, because you might think dark-coloured panties won't be visible through. To be on the safe side, always match the colour of your pants to your underwear - especially if wearing light pants.

Avoid Textured Material For Underwear If You're Wearing Flimsy Or Thin Material

It's great to wear a nice pair of lace panties or that pair with the extra frills at the top, but if you're dealing with very thing fabric, like flimsy summer dresses, also go for underwear which is plain, smooth and seamless so that underwear textures won't show through.

Try To Get Bras With Different Strap Styles To Give Your Shoulders A Break

Try normal straps, strapless, cross-strap and thicker straps like sports bras - mixing it up with a variety means that you won't constantly have the same specific area of your shoulder digged-in by one specific type of strap and it can help to let your skin breathe in that area, too.
