Scariest Stories From Ice Road Truckers

1. A gun to the head

Image source/ RedditMy dad had stopped for the night outside a gold pawn shop. This woman comes out to try and speak to my dad, so he winds his windows down. Anyway, she suddenly takes out a gun, holds it to his head and asks for him to hand over everything and then three huge guys accompany her. He didn't have a lot just 60 dollars and some tokens. She then wants to take him to an ATM to make a withdrawal, but he realises he can't, or they'll take everything he's worked for. Somehow, he made it back to his truck to lock the door and beep the horn and they scarpered. He called the police and they managed to get two of them.

2. Half a person's decapitated body

Image source/ YouTubeI come from a family of ice road truckers. My parents were both truckers and a story my dad once told me has never left me. He'd heard on the driver's radio that a truck had gone off the road and hit a tree. So, he went to the scene and the truck was completely smashes. It was carrying slate sheets at the top. There didn't seem to be a body in the front, so he went closer and found half a body. The engine was still running. And the head was found some metres away from the truck it had been severed by a falling slate.

3. Thousands of tarantulas

Image source/ wikipediaI was driving along the icy road with my truck partner and usually you think if there's a danger ahead it's to do with the ice. Not in this case. This time it was like something out of a horror film - thousands and thousands of tarantulas. The truck drove right through a lot of them before we could see what they were.  that the truck actually started to slip and slide. There was so many that the truck was literally sliding on Tarantula guts...

4. A terrible power nap

So, I'm just taking a nap and then this dog starts yapping outside of the door. But not just a little bit, incessant barking right at me. It was going on for like ten minutes, so I look out and I see this HUGE man stood watching my truck. He has seriously crazy eyes and he was foaming at the mouth. Yeah, I drove away straight after that.

5. Wheels on fire

Image source/ TheTorontoStarSo, I was driving through the Rocky Mountains - which is scary, especially when there's ice on the roads because trust me, those roads are narrow. Then, this truck comes speeding down the side of the road, which is nothing knew but scary, nonetheless. But, in quick succession another one flies down which again, nothing out of the blue. Until I look down. And then i see his tyres are on fire - literally on FIRE.

6. A very near miss

It became pretty clear he couldn't stop so I was backing away as fast as I can and thankfully...he finally pulled to a halt inch from me.

7. Tomahawk missiles used by the Department of Defense

Our contract stated that under no circumstanced do we open the load or tell anybody what is in the contents of the truck. We were being tracked by a GPS and had timers set on us so that we could not stop for more than half an hour or go off route.  then, we ended up being stopped by the DOT (Department of Transportation) who DEMANDED to see our load even though we refused and so they broke the electronic seal. It turns out it was Tomahawk missiles used by the Department of Defense. Two helicopters appeared on scene and the DOT guy was carted off to custody - he was released later.

8. Snow storms and steep drops

And, when you're on a mountain and the sky is so blurry with thick snow but there's a steep drop at the side of you.... these are the scariest moments. And these are common.

9. An unbelievable escape

Image source/ thejournalnewsWhat I'm going to say sounds like an unrealistic scene from a movie. But I kid you not it was real. My dad was driving in Montana, in the open remote plains. He had an open can of ether crack in the back of his car, anyway it caught fire, and the interior of the truck was soon on fire. He put the truck on slow, aimed it off road and jumped out with the can doing some kind of Olympic sprint (the police found shoe marks yards apart). He then ran after his truck removed the fire extinguisher, put out the fire. He got away with a few burns and scrapes.

10. A Moose accident

Image source/ hotcarsNow this story is a bit graphic. I was working for a soft drink company in Alaska. There was a problem with Moose and this one ran right in front of my truck. I didn't hit the moose hard thankfully, so I thought I hadn't caused much damage. I drive for a fair while and then when I pull up for a stop a bit of a crowd gathered around the front of my truck, and they started to beep. I got out and I find a Moose foetus on the front of my truck...

11. Sliding down a snowy mountain...

Her breaks had been changed and the truck had accidentally been signed off before it was ready, so a couple of the breaks didn't work. It was also very icy down this mountain. Anyway, she couldn't stop. She kept going down and these breaks weren't strong enough the stop the truck. She had to basically slide down the mo9ntain in her truck and she said it took about five miles off the mountain to actually come to a stop.

12. An injured Owl companion

And it's pitch black so he couldn't see much apart from the road and then he hears and feels a big thud on his windscreen. He gets out and finds he's a hit a big owl. So, feeling guilty he straps the owl into the seat next to him, belt and all. It was unconscious so it took it around an hour to start to stir. It then feels pretty bad after it's been injured quite badly so it kind of looks at my dad with an angry kind of look and the two of them just travel along in silence. When he's almost at the border he stops at a gas station, calls the police and then there's a load of people stood there wondering who should take the owl.

13. The speeding train

I couldn't see through the crossing because there was a huge line of trees so I just kind of assumed it was safe because I couldn't hear anything. Any way I start and it's too late to go back and the train is crossing. I accelerated so hard my life literally flashed before my eyes. Turns out it was turning at the point before, and I wasn't actually in danger.

14. A whipped cream mess

Eventually it seems that the altitude was so high the pressure in the truck made all of the lids pop up and my whole truck was covered in whipped cream.

15. A proposition

He wasn't so sure about the last leg to the actual factory, so he pulls up next to a bus stop to ask this old lady. Well, the reply was a no - and along with it came a very crude kind of proposition.

16. Pulling down the bridge lights

But there was one story he told us about crossing a bridge and getting stopped by people. It turns out that the truck was so high it had caught in the lights on the bridge, and he hadn't heard anything because the weather was crashing outside. He'd pulled down each and every bridge light with him.

17. Giant fluffy bunny rabbits

He told me he'd been feeling a little bit sleepy which obviously in harsh weather conditions and roads full of snow and ice is even more dangerous. He told me he had these pills to help him stay awake. But he knew it was time to take a break when he started seeing giant fluffy bunny rabbits in front of him.

18. A tragic scene

What had happened was a mum had let a little kid out at the side of the road after he'd been begging for a wee. But the kid had bolted randomly across the road and somehow managed to make it across the highway alive. Tragically the mom's instinct to run after him had ended up in her being hit and killed at high speeds. The whole thing was awful to see.

19. Seeing dead people

Whether it is trucks who have slipped off the icy paths or crashed during snowstorms. Once I was driving down the highway and saw parents lying dead alongside their baby. It haunts you that stuff.

20. A rude revelation

We open the door and there are three huge stocky and naked men lay there...and I didn't look for long, but it was very obvious what was going on. We shut the door, let them carry on and quickly vacated.

Anyway, I'm doing my route and the roads are really icy and I pass two trucks on the way that had slipped off track or skidded into a tree. After that I pulled up and waited until the next morning.

Anyway, I see this light in the distance. Only it's growing bigger fast. I then realise it must be goi0ng around 120 miles an hour - a huge truck. And I'm thinking they must not have control and it's coming right at me. By the time i'd thought this it was too late, so I literally grimaced and waited, and it whooshed past be about one metre away. The light was explained - the hay in the back of the truck was all on fire. I radio him to tell him. He says - I know, I'm trying to put it out by going fast...

23. Company on the roads

She drove the entire way by the side of this big ice trucker. After a couple of hours, she pulls of the road and so did he. They both got out of their cars, and he went over and gave her a big hug to thank her for keeping company after being lonely for so long.

My grandad went closer and couldn't see behind a thick veil of fog. He wrapped his hand in material opened the door and there was a full family unconscious. Thankfully he did because it saved their lives.

25. Someone in need

He tells her not to stop random guys for money and to stay safe. She then explains she's been kicked out of the car by her boyfriend and left stranded. She looked freezing too her lips were blue. He takes her to the nearest station buys her a ticket home and then gives him his number in case she's in need. A few weeks later her parents ring thanking him for getting her home safe.

26. A little visitor

27. Killed a man

28. Falling over the edge

This one time, I'm still not sure if I'd taken a wrong route or the conditions were just so bad, but my truck sipped ro0und the corned and it was so narrow that we went off the edge of the road. I'm lucky to be telling this story. It was so scary. The truck got stuck in a huge clump of trees and luckily the impact didn't kill me.

29. An unwanted guest

This huge man comes over and is trying to get a lift with me. I tell him I'm not allowed passengers. He started off all nicey nice, then started to insist despite me saying no. Anyway, then he starts climbing the truck and putting his hands through the window, so I put the window up until he's forced to remove it and quickly drive off.

30.  An Eagle eyed thief

Someone had stopped at the side of the road to take a picture of the sunset on her phone. A bald eagle literally swooped down, stole the phone and flew right across the highway with a mobile in its grip.
