1. “Yer a wizard, Harry”

This has to be the most famous line in Harry Potter from our beloved Hagrid, when he finally tracks down Harry to give his Hogwarts acceptance letter. Little did Harry know this would be the start of his adventure in the wizard world, with Hagrid becoming one of his fondest companions.

2. Hagrid comforts Hermione

We’ll never forget the scene in “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” when Draco calls Hermione  a ‘mudblood’, one of the most derogatory terms in the world of magic. But luckily Hagrid was always there as a shoulder to cry on, telling Hermione not to even think about Draco’s horrible words.

3. When he returns from Azkaban

One of the most heart-warming moments in the entire series is Hagrid’s return from Azkaban. As he walks through the doors of the Great Hall, he is greeted by a crowd full of happy faces and a loving hug from Harry who tells him “there is no Hogwarts without you, Hagrid”.

4. Hagrid adopts Norbert the dragon

Hagrid is well-known for his collection of interesting mythical pets, including Aragog the spider and Buckbeak the hippogriff. So it didn't come as much of a surprise when he decided to adopt Norbert the baby dragon, referring to himself as his “mummy”.

5. He introduces the gang to his half-brother Grawp

Although we know Hagrid has great love for his magical creatures, there someone else special in his life who we meet in the fifth film…his half-brother Grawp. He was terrified nobody would be there to look after him if something happened, relying on the trio to take care of him.

6. Hagrid gives Harry a photo album dedicated to his parents

At the end of the school year in “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” we see Hagrid giving Harry a photo album he had made full of pictures of James and Lily Potter. Hagrid knew that Harry barely had any pictures of his parents, so this was a thoughtful gift.

7. Hagrid carries baby Harry to No 4 Privet Drive

There is a recurring theme across the series of Hagrid carrying Harry to safety. In the opening scene of the first film, we see Hagrid carrying baby Harry to meet Dumbledore and Professor McGonagall where he will be placed in the care of his only living relatives at No 4 Privet Drive.

8. His romance with Madame Olympe Maxime

Hagrid is such a kind and loveable character, which is why his romance with Madame Olympe Maxime was such an iconic moment for us all. She is first introduced in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” as the headmistress of Beauxbatons Academy and we loved watching their love blossom.

9. Taking Harry to The Burrow on his motorbike

Things start to take a dark turn after Voldemort’s return in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1” and we see a group of members from the Order arrive at No 4 Privet Drive. Hagrid is placed with the responsibility of safely transporting Harry to the Weasley residence.

10. When he makes Harry a birthday cake

One of the most endearing moments is when Hagrid makes Harry a cake for his 11th birthday, despite having only just met him properly since the day he dropped me off as a baby. Hagrid may be great at many things, but baking definitely isn’t one of them!

11. Hagrid introduces Harry to dragons

Hagrid’s love for dragons is prominent throughout the series, even having his own pet dragon Norbert who we meet in the very first film. This is why there was only one person to turn to when Harry finds out his first challenge in the Goblet of Fire involves dragons…

12. His first lesson as a Professor

In the third film we see Hagrid debut in his first official role as a professor at Hogwarts teaching Care of Magical Creatures. However, the lesson doesn’t quite go to plan when Draco is attacked by Buckbeak the hippogriff even though Hagrid did warn the class not to aggravate him.

13. Hagrid gives Dudley a pigs tail

One of Hagrid’s most amusing moments is when he uses a spell on Harry’s cousin Dudley to transform him into a pig, but it fails and he ends up with just a pigs tail. Despite being forbidden to use magic, Hagrid couldn’t help himself after Harry’s uncle Vernon insulted Dumbledore.

14. He buys Harry his first owl

Hagrid takes Harry to Diagon Alley before he starts Hogwarts where he is first introduced to the world of magic. When he goes off to buy his wand at Ollivander’s, Hagrid takes it upon himself to buy Harry an owl. Hedwig becomes one of Harry’s most loyal companions in the series.

15. He reassures Harry not to worry about joining Hogwarts

With Harry having such an abrupt introduction to his new life as a wizard, he was apprehensive about starting Hogwarts. Luckily Hagrid was there to give him some words of advice, reassuring him that everyone will be just as nervous as him and not to worry about being behind.

16. When Hagrid puts his faith in Dumbledore

One of the most touching relationships in the series is between Hagrid and Dumbledore, who remain loyal friends until the very end. Hagrid often expressed his admiration for the Hogwarts headmaster, assuring others that everything would work out as long as Dumbledore was around.

Although you could always rely on Hagrid, he wasn’t the best at keeping secrets…when Hagrid is looped in conversation with Harry and the gang, he ends up revealing more than he should about the giant three-headed dog Fluffy who was guarding the Philosopher's Stone.

It is heartbreaking when Hagrid is taken away to Azkaban after the Ministry of Magic suspect he was the one who opened the Chamber of Secrets again. Back in his third year of Hogwarts, he was framed by Tom Riddle for opening the chamber which led to his expulsion.

19. He gives Harry his coat to sleep with

Hagrid really was a loveable giant, and there are many moments throughout the series where he shows his caring nature towards Harry. In one scene we see him give Harry his big black coat to use as a blanket, warning him there may still be a few mice in the pockets - typical Hagrid!

20. He warns Harry about centaurs

We are first introduced to centaurs in the first film when Hagrid and Harry are on the hunt for an injured unicorn in the Forbidden Forest. Hagrid asks them for help but they gave no clear answer to which he then says, "ruddy stargazers, not interested in anythin' closer'n the moon."

21. Aragog’s funeral

Aragog was Hagrid’s beloved giant pet spider, much to everyone else’s dislike who were quite afraid of the big beast. Aragog sadly died from an illness caused by old age and his funeral took place in Hagrid’s pumpkin patch located just behind his cabin.

22. "Mad and hairy? You wouldn’t be talkin’ about me?”

It wasn’t just the Ministry of Magic who suspected Hagrid may have been the one who opened the Chamber of Secrets…Hagrid overhears the trio discussing their suspicions, although they weren’t talking about him when they were describing someone ‘mad’ and ‘hairy’ on the loose around the castle.

23. When he carries Harry’s body back to Hogwarts

This will always be one of the most heart-wrenching scenes in the entire series…the moment Hagrid carries Harry’s limp body back to Hogwarts believing Voldemort had killed him. There is something symbolic about Hagrid always being the one to carry Harry all the way from the beginning to the end.

24. "Dry up Dursley, you big prune”

We’re not the only ones who can’t stand the Dursley family…Hagrid despised them too! When Vernon pulls out a shotgun in an attempt to scare Hagrid away in the first film, he simply bends the end of the gun and tells him to “dry up Dursley, you big prune”.

25. Hagrid tells Harry about Voldemort

One of the most special things about Hagrid was that he always told the truth and he never tried to hide things from Harry. He is the first one to sit him down and tell him about Voldemort, warning Harry “not all wizards are good, some of them go bad”.

26. When he warns Draco that Fang is a coward

When Harry, Hermione, Draco and Neville are sent to the Forbidden Forest as punishment, Draco insists that Hagrid’s dog Fang must accompany him. He wasn’t very impressed when Hagrid informed him that despite his looks, Fang was a big softie who wouldn’t be much help!

27. "Biggest bunch of misfits I Ever Set Eyes On."

Hagrid was always deeply fond of Harry, Ron and Hermione. We love the scene in the fourth film when Hagrid calls them the “biggest bunch of misfits” he’d ever set eyes on. They were indeed a dysfunctional group of friends, but they reminded Hagrid of himself in his youthful years at Hogwarts.

28. When Hagrid tells Ron "better out than in”

When Ron tries to defend Hermione against Draco when he insults her, he unfortunately jinxed himself with the “eat slugs” spell which caused him to feel very unwell. Luckily Hagrid was on hand with a bucket, reassuring Ron that it was “better out than in”.

29. Hagrid defends Dumbledore

Another example of Hagrid’s loyalty to Dumbledore is his reaction to the Dursley’s badmouthing him, with Hagrid famously telling them to "never insult Albus Dumbledore in front of me”. Hagrid’s temper could sometimes get him into trouble, but he always meant well and took care of those he loved.

Hagrid may have been considered an outcast, but he was never ashamed of who he was with the famous quote “I am what I am, an' I'm not ashamed”. He was always proud of his upbringing and never let anyone hold it against him, inspiring others to do the same.
