1. Your handwriting says SO MUCH about your personality!

Most of us probably don't think about our handwriting a lot. It was fun in school to compare handwriting styles or signatures, but especially with laptops and phones, most of us never need to write anything anymore. But actually, your handwriting can say a lot. What can it say?

2. Did you know? People even study it for a living...

The science of handwriting is so interesting that there's an entire science of studying it: graphology. These people spend years dissecting handwriting from criminals and historical letters to find out something about the person that wrote those things. And you can do the same with your own handwriting.

3. AMAZINGLY, it may be used to diagnose disorders like depression...

It's not just your personality that shines through your handwriting, graphology can also be used to diagnose certain illnesses like depression, Parkinsons and other mental health based conditions. So, you could actually save someone's life with your analysis of their handwriting!

4. Let's start with size

So - how big is your writing? At school, you're always told to write between the lines, but as you get older, maybe your handwriting has naturally returned to big or small letters. If you tend to write big letters, you may be outgoing, outspoken, and like attention. Small writing, on the other hand, means you're studious and meticulous.

5. Reading between the lines

When you write a sentence, how much space do you leave between the separate words? Leaving a big gap means you like freedom in life and don't like feeling trapped or forced into something. A narrow gap between words could mean you don't like feeling alone and may tend on the more intrusive side.

6. Do you slant your letters?

Slanted writing

Slanting varies a lot between different people. If you've never noticed this in your own handwriting, then you're probably not a slanter - and this says a lot too. Straight letters can suggest that you don't let your emotions rule you or that you're very logical when looking at problems or challenges.

7. Which side you slant matters

Now let's talk about slanting. If your letters tend to slant to the left, you're a wallflower, someone who likes to keep themselves to themselves. Slanting to the right, meanwhile, means you're very open to new experiences and meeting new people.

8. So does the shape of letters

Okay, let's go into even more detail now. Have you ever thought of the shape of your letters? If you write in a very rounded style, with few straight lines and corners, then you're very creative. If you tend to write very straight and box-like, then you're more intense and curious.

9. Tend to write in cursive?

cursive handwriting

The above just applied to non-cursive handwriting. If you tend to write in cursive - where the letters run into one another and are joined up - then it means that you're logical and can take a lot of time to make decisions and evaluate your options.

10. If your l's look like this, you may be tense

Beautiful handwriting

When you write an l, what does the loop at the top of the letter look like? If it's very narrow, or you can't see one at all, then you may be prone to feeling restricted in your life, whether in your emotions or opportunities. (Or, you may have just not been taught to write your l's with a loop.)

11. Big loops mean relaxed

If, however, your l's tend to have a very wide loop on them, with a lot of space in between the lines, it means that you're relaxed and very spontaneous. The same applies to loops on your e's - narrow can mean you tend to be sceptical, while wide loops point to being more open-minded.

12. Dot your i's

How do you dot your i's? If your little i dot appears slightly to the left of the letter itself, then it means that you're a bit of a procrastinator. If your dot is more of a slant than a true dot, it means you may be quite self-critical and don't have a lot of patience for other people making mistakes.

13. Leaving space is a good thing

You can even analyse how much space you leave between the line of an I and its dot. If you dot pretty close to the I's line, then you're a very organised person. If there's a larger gap between the dot and the I, you may have a great imagination and spend time dreaming a lot.

14. Cross your t's

T's are another thing you've probably never noticed about your own handwriting - but they can also say a lot. Are your crosses quite short? Then you may be lazy. Longer crosses - that jut out far from the T - mean you're a very determined person, but you might tend towards stubbornness.

15. High or low crosses?

If your T cross is towards the middle of the T then you're confident and self-aware. It's a very similar story for people who cross their Ts at the top of the letter - you're ambitious and optimistic and probably love a lot of things about your personality and body.

16. You can tell a lot from o's

Are you open or closed? If you tend to write your o's quite looped, with the tops not quite touching, your personality is also more open - you're talkative, social, and love sharing secrets. On the other hand, if you write very closed o's, with little looping, that means you're more private and introverted.

17. And s's

You've probably never thought about it, but there are different ways to write s's. A very round, cursive s means you like to avoid confrontation. A more pointy, tall s can mean that you're inquisitive and like learning new things. Finally, if you keep your s quite wide on the bottom and narrow on the top, it means that you might not feel very contented with your life.

18. Where do you write on the page?

Writing in book

We get taught in school to write from left to right, but you may have changed your positioning as you get older. If you still write very much in the left-hand margin, then you may live in the past a little bit. Tending towards the right of the page means you worry about the future. And writing in the middle of the page generally means that you may feel a little restless.

19. If you write heavily, you may be too serious

How much pressure do you put on your pen? A heavy writing style, pressing into the page, means you're quite a serious person. You may also react badly to criticism and tend to be quite uptight. All of these feelings will manifest with heavy handwriting.

20. Light writing means the opposite

On the other hand, if you hold your pen in a relaxed manner, with very light handwriting, it could mean that you're a sensitive person who feels deeply. It might also mean that you tend to empathise with other people but also lack a bit of vitality and expression in your life.

21. How fast do you write?

You might think that speed of writing is just something ingrained in us, but it can also say a lot about your personality. Fast writing means that you're impatient and can't deal well with delays. If you write slowly, however, it means you're quite methodical and like doing things in a particular manner.

22. Unintelligible signature? You're pretty private

unreadable signature

Now let's talk about signatures - they're also a part of your handwriting. An unintelligible signature, where it's impossible to make out letters, means you like to keep yourself to yourself and may be hard to understand. You might also like to keep things quite private, sharing them with very few people.

23. If you can read it, you're the opposite

neat handwriting

If your signature is very legible, with pronounced letters, then you may be the opposite. Namely, you may be very confident in yourself, with very little room for self-criticism. You also don't feel like you need to be someone you're not and are happy with people knowing details about yourself.

24. How big are your I's? That says a lot

aesthetic handwriting goals

When you write 'I AM...', how big is your I compared to other capitals? If it's the same height as other letters, then it means you're quite happy with yourself and are confident. However, if you write your I's much bigger than other letters, then you may be a little bit arrogant and need to make yourself appear bigger.

25. We can even tell what your energy levels are

We've already covered the pressure in your pen and what this means for your personality, but it can also reveal things about your energy levels. Heavy pressure means you have high energy, whereas having very light handwriting means that you may be tired.

26. Early signs of Alzheimer's

messy writing

Remember when I said that students of graphology can even diagnose medical issues? Well, one of those is Alzheimer's disease. As your brain suffers from the effects of the disease, your handwriting will quickly change. So, if you see that you or someone else have irregular writing or letters moving around the page, that could be Alzheimer's.

27. And Parkinson's

small handwriting

If you have very small, cramped handwriting - officially called micrographia - then you may be developing early symptoms of Parkinson's disease. This is a very early sign but is generally quite obvious - particularly if the writing becomes so small that you can't even read the words or letters.

28. Different writing pressure can also show something important

The pressure of your writing can even show if you have high blood pressure, a serious medical issue that is worth getting checked out as it can lead to all sorts of problems. Namely, writing that changes pressure a lot from light to dark can be one sign that you have high blood pressure.

29. Graphology can show a lot

handwriting examples

How you write can say a lot about your mental health, whether we're talking about just your personality or the health of your brain. For example, when you slant very often from side to side, not sticking to left or right, it can even be a sign that you have Schizophrenia.

30. Was this accurate?

But was any of this accurate for you? Next time you find an old slip of your handwriting, say from the past year, have another read of this and see if you can identify any particular obvious traits of your handwriting - it could tell you a lot about yourself.
