1. She's never shied away from the spotlight

Back in the 70s, Jane Fonda was one of the world's most controversial stars in Hollywood, today she's a legend. Daughter of actor Henry Fonda and socialite Frances Ford Brokaw, she made herself into a household name by her late teens.

2. She's part of the mile high club...unfortunately for her,  not with Ryan Gosling

Fonda has unashamedly admitted to being part of the "mile high club". No one actually knows who it was with, but she's never shied away from her sexuality or talking about her sexuality either. She has been a sex symbol since the 50s after all.

3. Things weren't all glitz & glam for Fonda

Despite having the reputation as the 'golden family' of Hollywood, behind the scenes, things weren't all as they seemed. The Fonda's struggled to keep Jane's mother, Frances above water a lot of the time as she battled with her mental health throughout her life. In 1950 she sadly lost her battle after committing suicide.

4. Her infamous 'sexpot role' as Barbarella

In her early career, Fonda was known for playing sexpot, Barbarella and that role paid off. In 1995, Fonda was named one of the sexiest stars of all time coming it number 21 on the list. Since her role as Barbarella, Fonda's career have gone from one success story to another.

5. Her time in Hanoi, Vietnam

Fonda visited Vietnam in 1972 when a photograph emerged of her sitting on a Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun - she quickly became known as 'Hanoi Jane'. "

Jane & her father had a strong bond but their relationship was a little toxic at times.
“I was taught by my father that how I looked was all that mattered, frankly. He was a good man, and I was mad for him, but he sent messages to me that fathers should not send: Unless you look perfect, you’re not going to be loved.”

Whilst studying at Vassar, a highly selective liberal arts college in the US, Jane got quite a reputation for herself for flaunting the rules. Many of her university friends used to attended afternoon tea parties with Jane before she was reprimanded for not adhering to the dress code. Frustrated, she turned up one day in the required gloves and pearls - but nothing else!

Famous people tend to get in trouble just like the rest of us, sometimes known for their outlandish behaviour. Over the course of her life, Fonda has had some run ins with the police for her activism and just her personal behaviour. In the 70s, Fonda was escorted to the courthouse, but slipped out of her handcuffs to pose for her mugshot.

10. She once had a fivesome with Warren Beatty and one of the Mamas & the Papas

Singer and guitarist of The Mamas and the Papas revealed a surprising story about himself and Jane Fonda in his autobiography. Both he and his wife Michelle were invited to Jane's house with Warren Beatty before engaging in a "mid sized romp" with Fonda's husband at the time joining in as well.

When Fonda burst onto the scene in the 1960s, she got some great reviews with one publication calling her "the loveliest and most gifted of all our new young actresses" but that same year, the Harvard Lampoon also gave her the dubious honor by naming her
"The Year's Worst Actress".

She attended Vassar College before dropping out to fly to Paris to study art for six months instead. Ooh La La! This is where she learnt her French and fell in love with the most romantic country in the world.

When Jane was married to activist Tom Hayden, the pair adopted the daughter of two Black Panthers, Mary Luana Williams (Lulu). Her biological father was imprisoned and her mother had descended into alcoholism before becoming physically abusive towards Lulu and her other children.

14. Things haven't always been great

As a young model, Fonda picked up some pretty bad habits along the way, she started suffering from an eating disorder - bulimia - that followed her well into her 30s. She also admitted to surviving on coffee, cigarettes and strawberry yoghurts.

In Sir Mix-A-Lot's "Baby Got Back", Jane got a shout out and though Fonda's workout video's were very popular, Sir-Mix-A-Lot wasn't much of a fan. In his song, you hear him say,
“So your girlfriend rolls a Honda / Playin’ workout tapes by Fonda / But Fonda ain’t got a motor in the back of her Honda.”

When Jane was under immense heat for her political activism, he brother always stood by her. He even got arrested for defacing a public poster which read "Feed Jane Fonda to the Whales". Still to this day she speaks out for causes like the Black Lives Matter movement and the environmental crisis.

Through her recent protesting, Fonda found inspiration in Greta Thunberg, who is known for her global Fridays for Future climate protests. Jane made headlines when she was arrested, again, multiple times, during some of her demonstrations on the steps of Capitol Hill.

In 1970, Fonda was found with 105 bottles of pills in her luggage contained around 2,000 pills. Authorities arrested her. Fonda resisted the arrest before kicking both the patrolman and the customs agent. The explosive incident at Cleveland Airport gave her a reputation for years after.

19. Jane Seymour Fonda was named after someone VERY famous!

For any history buffs out there, you might recognise Jane Seymour as one of England's most famous Tudor king, Henry VIII's third wife. Though distant, there is an actual ancestry connection to her through her mother's genealogy. How random!

20. Jane the sex worker

Fonda has been no stranger to a sex scandal, she also won an Academy Award for her winning role in Klute & her 1962 film, Walk on the Wild Side. When asked about how she deals with being typecast, she replied,
“Working in Hollywood does give one a certain expertise in the field of prostitution.”

Jane spent a lot time in Paris & the French Riviera in the 60s. While she was filming Les Félins in 1963, she met her first husband, French screenwriter Rogen Vadim who ended up directing her breakthrough movie, Barbarella.

Now, this is actually a French actor in this photo, but Fonda once admitted that Michael Jackson would come and visit her whilst on set. The two became good friends and even allegedly went skinny dipping with each other.
“[Michael Jackson] came and lived with me for about a week, in the same home. He slept on a mattress that he pulled out on the floor of the living room. I slept on a loft upstairs.”

With a face and figure like that, it's no surprise that Fonda has had her fair share of Hollywood steamy affairs. Some of her most famous rumoured beaus are Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger and Tinseltown lothario Warren Beatty.

The stifling image that the Fonda family had, unfortunately led to a lot of pressure to keep up appearances - especially in regards to Jane's mother, Frances. As we know, Frances sadly took her own life in 1950 whilst staying in a Psychiatrist Hospital. Fonda's father told the kids she had died from heart failure until eventually, Fonda found out whilst reading a magazine she got from a friend at school.

25. People have really held grudges against her for years and years

Back in 2005, when Fonda was at a book signing, she was spat at by a veteran of the US military who had held a grudge against her since her staunch anti-war stance throughout the Vietnam war. The veteran lined up, then spat tobacco in her face as revenge for the anti-war comments he found offensive.

People are so used to Fonda's glamorous image that when she's just getting on with her day to day life, she likes to walk around in public without wearing any makeup and no one recognises her. It's a great way for her to hide in plain sight really, isn't it!

27. Jane's second husband hated her success!

Fonda's been married three times, but her second husband was unique in that he didn't have the wealth of Fonda's other partners. This became an issue between the two, as Tom Hayden (Activist) found Fonda's wealth uncomfortable and tried to make her hide it. Hayden forced her to replace her Cartier with a Timex and they eventually divorced in 1990.

28. She's not just a pretty face

Jane's actually a smart cookie - this probably doesn't come as much of a shock to anyone, but she has a confirmed IQ of 132. Experts consider this to be the top tier. Pauline Kael once said,
“As an actress, [Fonda] has a special kind of smartness that takes the form of speed; she’s always a little ahead of everybody.”

29. She was almost charged  with obscenity in Italy for appearing naked in a film

After starring naked in Italian movie, La Ronde, people were outraged. Two years later, she appeared topless in French-Italian film La Curée. This caused a stir in Italy and 23 Italian cinema owners and one producer who worked on the film were charged with obscenity.

30. Jane retired for 15 years, then returned to the big screen

Fonda returned to the big screen in 2005 for the romantic comedy, Monster-In-Law alongside Jennifer Lopez and Michael Vartan. Two years later, she starred in Georgia Rule - both films meeting critical acclaim.
