20 Crazy KitKat Flavors That Need To Be Seen To Be Believed
1. Cheesecake

It is with regret that the Cheesecake KitKat did not deliver on the flavor it promised. There was an aroma of some cream cheese tang when it was unwrapped but unfortunately, that did not transfer to the taste. It mainly tasted like a white chocolate Kit Kat with a vanilla undertone! This is disappointing because the illustration makes you want to devour it instantly but the reality is that the Kit Kat was more boring than anticipated. This is a missed opportunity because we WANT cheesecake flavour but didn't get it.Advertisement
2. Duos Strawberry and Dark Chocolate
The combination of strawberry and dark chocolate is a winner in anyone's book and the prospect of a Kit Kat Duos with this delicious union is something to bring some light into a run of the mill day. On opening the KitKat, there is a strawberry flavored fondant, or creme as Hershey's would describe it, on white chocolate. The bottom of the wafer is dark chocolate and there is a strong aroma of strawberry, almost like a scratch and sniff card. The chocolate tastes fake, rather waxy and didn't quite hit the spot.Advertisement
3. Pistachio

When you are a lover of pistachios and always pick them out of a variety pack of nuts, then to hear that you can buy Pistachio Kit Kats must be music to your ears. The great news is that Kit Kat fans can't get enough of these and say they are amazing! They taste similar to the Chocolate Hazelnut Thins but they are actually even better, particularly the chocolate element. Some people say they can taste Nutella in them - praise indeed! Our advice is not to buy too many at once because you won't be able to stop yourself eating them!Advertisement
4. Birthday Cake

Here is another KitKat that is not actually coated with chocolate. Everyone appears to be obsessed with birthday cake and Funfetti flavored stuff, even though it mainly tastes purely of sugar! Bearing that in mind, Birthday Cake Kit Kats are not exactly overwhelming. The fondant is extremely sugary and there is a definite taste of artificial flavorings, particularly the fake vanilla. Some of the bites of the wafer were reminiscent of Froot Loops. Our advice is to skip this flavor and go for one of the others.Advertisement
5. Matcha

Don't be put off by the color of the Matcha Japanese Kit Kat as it's not that bad. The green colored coating has a decent texture and it does melt in your mouth, so positive so far. The bar is not overly sweet and does taste like matcha but maybe too much so if it is to be classed as a biscuit. However, if you are really into Matcha, this Kit Kat could feature in your top ten! We noticed that most of the fondant coated Japanese Kit Kats do melt in your mouth, as chocolate bars do, so it's a thumbs up from us.Advertisement
6. White Creme

The thought of eating a White Creme KitKat should leave us licking our lips but this wasn't the case when we bit into the palm oil based fondant that was so sweet, we could have mistaken it for a tablespoon of sugar! There was a hint of milk and vanilla thankfully but the accompanying "tang" would have been better placed in a cheese flavored potato chip! Sometimes you need to persevere in the hope of gaining a positive but, at the end of the day, it was clear that this low quality chocolate treat didn't register in the "Most Wanted" list.Advertisement
7. Raspberry Creme Miniatures

Surely there is nothing more romantic than receiving the Valentine's special of Raspberry Creme Miniatures. This variety of Kit Kat is not usually around at any other time of the year so be sure to get it when it hits the shelves. The image on the front of the wrapper gives the impression that there is a raspberry jam in between the layers of wafer but this wasn't so when we opened the actual pack. There is a pink fondant on the outside of each bite sized bar which doesn't exactly melt in the mouth and a strong artificial fruit flavour. Not the worst Kit Kat we've tried but we can't rave about it.Advertisement
8. Sachertorte

Many of the Japanese Kit Kats are manufactured to taste similar to fancy desserts. You already know that this one is going to be extra special because you only get one miniature Kit Kat segment in the package! When we googled what a Sachertorte actually was, turns out it is an Austrian dessert, a dark chocolate cake with apricot and dark chocolate frosting. The KitKat did not totally emulate this although we were impressed with the almond and apricot flavors which came through. We recommend this!Advertisement
9. Dark Chocolate

Coming back to America now, here we have our own country's version of a Dark Chocolate KitKat. We already love Hershey's milk chocolate so we were desperate to try this one, having high hopes! The verdict was a "yes" on all fronts. The texture was good and there was a fair amount of chocolate on the outside. It tasted a little bitter, as dark chocolate does, compared to milk chocolate and the texture melted in our mouths, another big tick. We were pleased that this was the coating used and not the usual fondant which is hard.Advertisement
10. Chocolate Orange

We have to give credit to the flavor scientists behind Nestlé's Japanese Kit Kats and especially when they can pull off a taste of candied orange peel in the production of these Chocolate Orange Kit Kats. In fact, Hershey's have a lesson to learn as the American version is not nearly as tasty. This candy bar is beautifully blended with the citrus and chocolate and leaves the consumer satisfied and counting down to when it's appropriate to eat another, just to confirm that it really is that good!Advertisement
11. Caramel

Chocolate and caramel can only be described as a no-brainer when it comes down to good combinations and of course it works well, as we predicted, in KitKat form. There is no American version of a Caramel Kit Kat but it is easy to order the Japanese version online. This has the standard milk chocolate coating and the caramel is tucked in between the wafers. When you are enjoying it, it makes you think of Caramellos or Rolos but with the added dimension of the wafer crunch you can only get with a Kit Kat.Advertisement
12. Cacao 72%

This flavor is made with much darker chocolate than the regular Japanese Dark Chocolate Kit Kats. As with all chocolate bars, the higher cacao percentage makes the chocolate taste bitter and firmer. The Cacao 72% doesn't taste that much different from the American Dark Chocolate Kit Kat but it is more complex as the higher cacao one has a trick up its wafer sleeve - it is embedded with tiny fragments of cacao nibs. These elevate the Kit Kat and make it feel like it's a dessert. It also adds a fun element to it.Advertisement
13. Milk Tea

Image source: The journey & destination
When we looked closely at this, the Milk Tea Kit Kat was coated pretty much in the same milky white chocolate as the Café Au Lait Kit Kat. This Kit Kat, though, ended up tasting way better. The filling had a strong black tea taste with an element of a floral flavor, reminiscent of Earl Grey. This bitterness was such a perfect pairing with the sweet, milky candy on the outer part of the bar. We would deduce overall that you almost felt that you were drinking authentic milk tea. This Kit Kat can wholeheartedly be recommended.Advertisement
14. Whole Wheat

This is a bit of a mystery flavor we were not expecting. Whole wheat would normally be associated with bread or cereals but, no, it also extends to a Whole Wheat KitKat! The first thing we noticed is that the wrapper looked different to the one online but, anyway, let's discuss the taste. This is a white chocolate Kit Kat and the wafers taste like graham crackers, not a negative. The white chocolate is almost caramelized, like dulce de leche. The Whole Wheat Kit Kat is buttery with an element of quality so we say you should go for it.Advertisement
15. Strawberry Gateau Chocolate

Image source: Recommendation Of Unique japanese Products And Culture
To be honest, we were a little afraid that the Strawberry Gateau Chocolate would have a weird taste to it, mainly because the American Strawberry Kit Kat did not live up to expectations. Even though we got an aroma of fake strawberries, we were more than happy that this Kit Kat did, indeed, taste of the red fruit. Unlike the Duos Strawberry and Dark Chocolate, the Strawberry Gateau Chocolate Kit Kat has a high quality milk chocolate coating that is delicious, melting in the mouth and putting us in a happy place!Advertisement
16. Thins Chocolate and Hazelnut

Kit Kat's Thins line is their attempt to make a snack version of its product. Each Thin has a shorter stack of wafers, so this affects the ratio of chocolate. You do get five thins in a pack, so not all bad; and the aroma which is similar to Nutella, mixed with hazelnut, has to be marked down as a winner. In fact, the overall experience of eating ALL FIVE Chocolate and Hazelnut Thins gave us the same buzz as eating a Ferrero Rocher. After a great deal of deliberation, we are putting this Kit Kat right up there with the best of them.Advertisement
17. Duos Mint and Dark Chocolate

If you are a "super fan" of Thin Mints and you have been praying that you could get them all year round, not just during the festive season, then we have good news for you. Your prayers have been answered. KitKat Duos Mint and Dark Chocolate are staying on the grocery shelf full time. This flavor tastes incredibly similar to everyone's favorite Girl Scout Cookie. They even smell like York Peppermint Patties and not like strong toothpaste, which we were concerned about. The bitter chocolate and mint creme combination is yummy!Advertisement
18. Japanese Dark Chocolate

Image source: A Simple Geeky Life
We did think about about stacking the Japanese Dark Chocolate Kit Kat alongside its American cousin but realised that would be an insult to it. It is very different from the U.S. version and superior to it. Our spirits were lifted and almost catapulted as we had found some dark chocolate which delivered more than a single flavor note of cocoa powder bitterness. Although the chocolate is a little bitter, it also has a richness to it that the other dark Kit Kats lacked. It is softer and has a better texture. We absolutely loved it!Advertisement
19. Café Au Lait

Image source: Jen Ken's Kit Kat Blog
With all coffee flavored chocolate, we find this usually divides chocolate lovers. They either adore it or hate it. The Cafe Au Lait Kit Kat was one of the few times that we thought the American version of a similar concept was better executed. The Japanese Café Au Lait Kit Kat is coated with a milky tasting white fondant. It has a pleasing texture and flavor but it is very sweet. The miniature size is ok and we wouldn't refuse it but a full sized version would be far too sugary and sickly. That's our opinion anyway.Advertisement
20. Japanese Mint

The Japanese Mint Kit Kat tastes similar to the Duos version but there are a couple of things that it does better. For one, instead of a layer of mint creme on top, the wafers are totally covered in delicious milk chocolate. The mint flavor is hidden in the wafers (which are dyed green). The chocolate coating has a much softer texture than the creme and dark chocolate in the Hershey's mint product. To conclude, the high quality chocolate and green wafers are preferred to its American counterpart.Advertisement
21. Classic

Of course the classic Kit Kat has to take the number one spot in our list. It would be a crime not to appreciate the creamy milk chocolate and crisp wafers that so many of us have enjoyed throughout our childhood through to adults, with no intention of ever stopping. Whether you are munching your way through a Hershey's Kit Kat in America or a Nestlé Kit Kat in another place in the world, one thing is guaranteed. You can never go wrong with the Classic Kit Kat. It always satisfies and will always continue to do so.Advertisement
22. Sweetness For Adults

A guy ordered this multipack of Japanese Kit Kats online and it came with a cheat sheet for non-Japanese speakers so they could identify each of the flavors of Kit Kat. Unfortunately, his candy bar was not labelled, but based on the packaging design and the flavor, we think it's the saucy Sweetness For Adults Kitkat! There is not anything adult about this Kit Kat but it is tasty. It's a cookies and creme variation that has a white chocolate coating with crushed up chocolate biscuits. It is sweet but in a good way. There is texture and a caramelized toasty taste and we like it!Advertisement
23. Cranberry Almond

Rich dark chocolate with a display of crispy bits on the top of it sounds like a holiday flavor but this isn't the case with the Cranberry Almond Kit Kat Minis. We were surprised that it was only available as a single stick variety, one of the few Kit Kats to be sold this way. With almonds, you either like them or you don't, a bit like Vegemite! This variety didn't capture the candy and cookie audience that was expected and we purchased ours from a bargain basement store.Advertisement
24. Butter Cookie

This is an unusual Kit Kat flavor. It is a very buttery white chocolate which comes with instructions on how to bake it! It's to go in a toaster oven and this will create a caramelized layer on the top. I was too impatient to do this and ate it straight out of the wrapper. It tasted good but was a bit soft, my fault for not toasting it. I then looked upon this as an important experiment and followed the instructions. I'm glad I did because I really loved the results. In fact, the topping was so addictive, I made three more!Advertisement
25. Uji Matcha

There are a number of various Matcha Kit Kats to be found in Japan and these are broken down into regular and premium varieties. The Uji Matcha Kit Kat was at the top of the premium list as Uji is the region where Japan's finest matcha tea is produced. This superior wafer biscuit had a grassy flavour which totally complimented the sweetness that came from the white chocolate coating. We were actually shocked at how good it was and how each flavor complimenting each other. You really do have to try it.Advertisement
26. Sakura Sake

Sakura Sake Kit Kat flavor consists of white chocolate with a little hint of sake and then subtle floral undertones. It is very sweet but in a good way and the overall texture is leaving me digging this Kit Kat. Just a mention whilst we are talking about unusual flavors. I managed to get hold of a Wasabi Kit Kat which I'm sure will have some of you cringing. Although there was a taste of wasabi in the wafers, it was subtle and enhanced the chocolate, so much so that I can honestly say I really enjoyed it.Advertisement
27. Apple Pie

If I was choosing apple as a KitKat flavor, I would select dark chocolate to be the covering. After all, strawberries dipped in dark chocolate is a winner and I was basing it on that. The flavor people had other ideas and went with a white chocolate base. The Kit Kat did taste of apple and was crisp and fruity but I stand by my earlier thoughts that it should have been covered with dark chocolate and it would then have been a winner. Of course, that is my opinion and you might think the opposite. We're all different.Advertisement
28. Sweet Potato

You would be forgiven if you thought you were going to get a savory recipe for your dinner involving sweet potato. In a blind test taste, you would never, in a million years, guess the Kit Kat was made from this root vegetable. Once you do know and if you concentrate and get in the zone, you can just about taste the sweet potato. Regardless of whether you can or you cannot, one thing is for sure and that is that Sweet Potato Kit Kat is really good. It almost feels like the healthier option to a cookie!Advertisement
29. Duos Mocha and Chocolate

Finally, we have got back to an American Kit Kat. Duos Mocha and Chocolate Kit Kats have a mocha creme coating on the top and milk chocolate underneath. The aroma of this concoction was like the powder from a cappuccino coffee machine. Having said that, the creme layer was definitely better than in other Kit Kat varieties. Even better than that, there appeared to be ground coffee beans mixed into the creme and this added both flavor and the crispy texture we love. All in all, the Kit Kat is going places.Advertisement
30. Where To Buy Unusual Kit Kat Flavors

We've opened your eyes to a huge array of different and somewhat unusual Kit Kat flavors and we hope we have convinced you to be brave enough to try a few of them. Kit Kats are a popular gift item in Japan and they can be found in gift boxes in tourist areas and souvenir candy stores in train stations. Tokyo Station, across from Ramen Street, houses the Sweet Potato, Wasabi and Strawberry Cheesecake flavors of Kit Kat. Unusual American flavors stand proudly on grocery store shelves or in bargain basement stores.Advertisement
