DWTS’ Contestant’s Son, Who Hated Her Dancing Career, Says His Mom Is ‘Dead’
Amid the spotlight and glitter of "Dancing with the Stars," contestant and actress faced a private struggle that few saw coming: the widening gap between her ambitions and the quiet heartbreak of her home life.

Danielle Fishel, beloved for her role as Topanga on "Boy Meets World," is no stranger to balancing the spotlight and family life. But during her stint on "Dancing with the Stars," the strain of being away from home cracked through — and her young son's heartbreaking words shook her to her core.

The emotional moment unfolded on an episode of the "Trish Stratus Meets World" podcast, where Danielle revealed how rehearsals and performances in Season 34 had a profound impact on her role as a mother.
With hours swallowed by the show's grueling schedule, Danielle admitted she was missing out on life's little joys: school pickups, karate classes, baseball games. She described how prolonged absences suddenly replaced her once-familiar presence at home.

At first, Danielle believed her husband, Jensen Karp, and their sons, Adler and Keaton Karp, were adapting just fine. "I thought everyone at home was thriving," she said. But a sudden call from Adler's teacher shattered that illusion. The teacher gently shared that Adler had been struggling to focus in class. That alone was unsettling. But then came a comment that left Danielle stunned.
"And then he said, 'and also my mom died,'" Danielle recounted. "And the teacher said, 'I'm sorry,' And he was like, 'Yes, my mom. My mom is dead.'"

It was clear Adler was expressing something more profound — not a lie meant to deceive, but a desperate attempt to vocalize how much he missed his mother. Danielle didn't hesitate. She dropped everything and rushed from rehearsal to pick him up.
When she arrived, Adler was elated — momentarily. He asked what they'd be doing that night, but Danielle reminded him he had a movie night planned with friends. That's when his face changed, and he said:
"He bursts into tears and says, 'I hate this job. Why did you take this job? All you do is dance, dance, dance, dance, that's all you do. You never get to hang out with me and Keaton anymore. I want you to quit. Are you going to quit or not?'"

Danielle admitted she tried to console him. She acknowledged the pain her absence caused and told him she loved him — nothing about that had changed. But she also explained that she had made a commitment and wanted to honor it. The season wouldn't last forever.
The moment was a piercing reminder of what was being sacrificed behind the scenes of her glitzy television journey. Still, through the hurt, Danielle continued to uplift her family. Her social media is often filled with tender moments, especially celebrating her husband.

In a June 19, 2023, Instagram post, she wrote, "Happy Father's day to our Papa Bear, @jensenkarp. No one else I'd rather eat at the same chain restaurants with over and over, begging our kids to eat more than jelly packets [sic]. ❤️"

The year before, she posted, "Happy Father's Day to @jensenkarp. Father of two humans and two fur children (Brunch and Bill) and an endless source of fun, love, and calm in a house that radiates so much boy energy. I am so grateful you're my partner and that neither of us have [sic] to navigate this parenting thing alone. We love you and are so lucky you're ours. ♥️"
The warmth in those words reflects the same love and pain she felt when recounting Adler's reaction to her DWTS commitment. Being a working mother, especially in the entertainment industry, remains a constant tug-of-war between passion and presence.

Danielle also revealed that the season coincided with a harrowing personal health scare. On her "Pod Meets World" podcast, she shared that she had been diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), an early form of breast cancer.
This added yet another emotional layer to her already tumultuous journey through "Dancing with the Stars." Though her time on the show ended earlier than hoped, she carried away something priceless — the strength that comes from vulnerability.

After being eliminated, Danielle looked back on the experience with gratitude. She especially remembered the team dance from her final week as a defining moment — a blend of collaboration, creativity, and connection that embodied everything she loved about the show.

Her contemporary routine became more than just choreography. With her cancer diagnosis fresh in her mind, it transformed into a raw and cathartic release. While saying goodbye was difficult, it also felt like a proud finale. From the depths of her son's sorrow to the silent fears of a cancer diagnosis, Danielle's journey this season was far from ordinary.
But through the tears, the late-night rehearsals, and missed baseball games, she remained grounded in love — for her family, for her craft, and for the strength she showed both on stage and off.
