Billionaire’s Mom Sleeps in an Unexpected Place When Visiting Him
One grandmother and model isn't above sacrificing comfort if it means being close to the people she loves most.
During a glittering appearance at Heidi Klum’s Halloween party on October 31, 2025, Maye Musk stunned the crowd at the Hard Rock Hotel in New York dressed as Cruella de Vil, inspired by Glenn Close's unforgettable version. But behind the costume and cameras, the 77-year-old mother of Elon Musk revealed something astonishing.

While speaking to E! News, she admitted that when it comes to family, luxury takes a backseat. The world's most glamorous grandmother will gladly sleep in a garage just to be with her children and grandchildren.

Maye revealed that she would be spending Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's with her family. The plans, she explained, were already made for her. What she looks forward to most is the "many grandkids," which should be no problem since Elon has fathered 14 children.

Then came the confession that truly shocked her interviewer. "At SpaceX, he had a tiny house, and I could sleep in a hotel 45 minutes away, or in his garage," she said. "He had a single bed there. And everybody says, 'Oh, was it fabulous?' I said, 'No, there were boxes. It’s a garage. There were boxes.' I would rather sleep on a single bed rather than at a hotel 45 minutes away. There’s no point in visiting then."

This isn't the first time she has made do with whatever space was available. Her own mother in Canada once had no room for Maye except for the garage, so she put a twin bed there instead. It worked out well since her mother didn't own a car.
The model even said she would sleep anywhere, even on couches, if it meant being close to her family. She had actually revealed this before in 2022, when she told The Sunday Times that she slept in Elon's garage in Boca Chica because her son couldn't have a big home near a rocket site.
She has also been close to Elon at major events, like in 2021, during the Mother’s Day episode of "Saturday Night Live." The elegant woman read the cue cards and had fun with him on stage, while joking about Dogecoin.
Though she's known now for her striking looks, Maye spent decades running a nutritionist practice and has often called herself a "geek." Modeling, which began as a side job, only took off later in life. Of course, her son is admired by geeks all over the world.
She herself has always been in awe of Elon's brilliance. During her conversation with The Sunday Times, Maye recalled how her son absorbed information faster than anyone she'd ever known.
By age three, she already knew she had a "genius boy" on her hands. Even so, the matriarch admitted to not knowing whether he would be successful, not even after he created a computer game that impressed university students.
Maye credits her younger son, Kimbal Musk, who now sits on the board of SpaceX and Tesla, with helping Elon take off in the business world. She said:
"In the beginning, Kimbal was with him in the first company [a web software enterprise called Zip2] and Kimbal could explain what a computer is, what’s a cursor, what’s a mouse and the background as to why the program is so great."
That first company, Zip2, sold for 22 million dollars, paving the way for Elon's future empire. Meanwhile, Maye took on the role of encouraging her children, including Elon and Kimbal's sister, Tuska Musk, to chase their dreams and only gave advice when they asked for it.
In fact, if Elon had taken all her suggestions, the world would be much different because she told him not to go into electric cars or rockets.
No matter what he does, however, Maye remains her kids' biggest supporter. She said if they asked her to go to Mars with SpaceX, she would, although she admitted it is not something she looks forward to.
Additionally, when the Wall Street Journal published explosive claims about Elon Musk having an affair with the wife of Google's co-founder, Maye quickly called them out on Twitter. This was before her son purchased the platform and renamed it X.
Regarding some of her son's more controversial posts on the same platform, Maye further explained that his humor can be misunderstood, as jokes and sarcasm can come off weird in print.
