Elton John’s Teen Sons Look So Grown in Rare Family Photo

From early snapshots to confident public appearances and a family portrait with both parents that had the internet buzzing, trace the teenagers' evolution over the years through the tender photographs waiting at the end of the article.

A cosy library, a patterned rug, two loyal Labradors, and two teenagers who are suddenly almost as tall as their famous father. Family life looked very different in Sir Elton John's latest portrait, and fans could not get over one thing: how grown-up his sons are now.

In the newly unveiled photograph, Zachary John Furnish-John, 15, and Elijah Joseph Daniel Furnish-John, 13, stood confidently on either side of their parents inside the family's book-lined home library.

Dressed in simple black T-shirts and matching black loafers, the brothers kept their outfits understated, letting the setting — and their height — do the talking.

Behind them, shelves packed tightly with colourful spines stretched across the wall, while a tapestry-style rug softened the room beneath a classic sofa.

One of the family's black Labradors sat calmly at the centre of the frame, facing the camera, adding a relaxed warmth to the otherwise formal composition.

John, 78, leaned into his trademark flair in a rich purple suit, paired with bright blue glasses and trainers, bringing a pop of personality to the otherwise muted palette.

Furnish, 63, complemented him in a tailored green suit with a light-blue shirt, striking a polished yet easygoing pose. Together, the family balanced elegance with comfort in what felt like an intimate snapshot of their home world.

Online, the reaction to the photograph was immediate, affectionate, and centred squarely on the brothers' growth. "OMG the boys have grown up so quickly xxx," one person commented. Another wrote, "I cannot believe how big their boys are now."

Others reflected on the passage of time. "Fabulous family photo...you sometimes forget that young boys grow up❤️," one admirer shared. Another added, "Goodness those boys are so grown up now!!! Where does the time go. And what a beautiful black lab🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤."

More compliments followed close behind. "Lovely family, the boys are so handsome👍🏻," one person typed, while another predicted, "Such handsome sons, they will break a few hearts x." One observer even noted the siblings' similarity, writing, "The boys look like twins."

The portrait, taken three days before Christmas by photographer Catherine Opie, will go on display at London's National Portrait Gallery, according to The Telegraph.

In comments to the newspaper, John and Furnish said having their family photographed by Opie and exhibited at the gallery was a tremendous honour. They shared that they had long admired her work and felt proud to see her poignant images included in their own collection.

Opie, in turn, described the experience as truly special. She suggested the photograph captured something deeply human about family, explaining that documenting them together held particular meaning for her.

Victoria Siddall, director of the National Portrait Gallery, placed the image in a broader context.

She said the portrait recognised not only John's exceptional musical achievements but also the humanitarian and philanthropic efforts he and Furnish have championed over the past decades, as well as the family they created together.

Long before this latest milestone, John and Furnish first met through mutual friends in 1993. They entered a civil partnership in 2005, married on December 21, 2014, and welcomed their sons via surrogate along the way.

Over the years, the iconic singer has spoken openly about how transformative fatherhood has been.

During a 2016 appearance on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," he reflected that if someone had told him years earlier that he would be married to the man he loved with two children, he would have found it hard to believe.

Still, he described becoming a parent as the greatest gift in his life and said he and Furnish struggled to put into words how much they adored their boys.

By 2019, he was also making clear that superstardom stayed firmly on stage. Sir Elton John explained at the time that although his sons knew he was famous, he made a conscious effort not to bring his larger-than-life persona home with him.

In the end, for many, the image was more than a celebrity portrait. It was a reminder that even global icons measure time in much the same way as everyone else — by how quickly their children grow up.
