On August 3, 2023, Justin delivered a stunning announcement that would send ripples through political and public circles alike: after 18 years of marriage, he and Sophie had decided to separate.

The news came via a carefully worded statement on Justin's Instagram account, where he revealed that the decision followed a series of deep, emotional conversations between the two.
Emphasizing their continued mutual love and respect, Justin explained that although they were parting ways romantically, they remained committed to their family and to raising their children — Xavier, Ella-Grace, and Hadrien — together.

"Both parents will be a constant presence in their children's lives and Canadians can expect to often see the family together. The family will be together on vacation, beginning next week."

"The separation may have been partially driven by an ultimatum from Sophie that Trudeau not contest the next election," Wiseman suggested. "I now think he is more likely to stick in the political arena."

In a separate yet perhaps not unrelated development, Justin announced in January 2025 that he would resign as leader of the Liberal Party and step down as prime minister. At the time, he was expected to stay on as prime minister in a caretaker role, holding power only until a new leader could be selected.

The two were photographed leaving the iconic Crazy Horse cabaret hand-in-hand. A fan reportedly handed Katy a single rose as she exited the venue, before the pair slipped into a waiting vehicle.
The public outing marked the first time the two had been seen together in a romantic context, sparking discussions on social platforms. While some praised the pair for embracing happiness, others were quick to question the motive behind the public outing.

The rumored couple were first seen together in July 2025, dining at Le Violon in Montreal. An eyewitness shared that the two enjoyed each other's company as they devoured several dishes and sipped cocktails.
After the meal, they reportedly walked into the kitchen to thank the staff before leaving the restaurant.
Justin was also spotted at Katy's sold-out concert in Montreal, attending with his 16-year-old daughter, Ella-Grace.
