The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) was called to the residence of a man, 78, and his wife, 68, in Brentwood around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 14, 2025, according to law enforcement sources.
According to reports, the couple was identified by many sources as Robert Norman Reiner, the legendary actor and director, and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner.

Additional reporting revealed that the LAFD was called to provide medical aid and discovered the couple was deceased at the scene. TMZ further reported that sources say the two suffered lacerations consistent with a knife. The LAPD's Robbery Homicide Division is still investigating.

According to multiple sources who spoke with People, the couple was discovered by their daughter, Romy Reiner.

Another report by the outlet also states that multiple sources claim the couple was killed by their son, Nick Reiner. People Magazine reports that police said Nick is alive and being questioned, though they have not confirmed the sources' account and emphasized that no charges have been filed.

Rob was one of Hollywood's most influential filmmakers, known for directing "When Harry Met Sally…," "The Princess Bride," and "The American President." Michele, a photographer and creative force in her own right, remained largely out of the spotlight but played a pivotal role in his work.

In a widely shared CNN interview, Rob said he changed the ending of "When Harry Met Sally…" because of Michele, crediting her perspective with reshaping the film's emotional payoff.
In the interview, Rob explained that the film was initially meant to end with Harry and Sally not ending up together, reflecting a period in his life marked by long stretches of marriage followed by years of being single and uncertain about whether a lasting partnership was possible.

However, after meeting Michele during the film's production and later marrying her, his outlook changed, leading him to rewrite the ending. Hence, the characters ultimately found their way to each other.

According to Variety, Michele was once a photographer who shot the cover photo for Donald Trump's "The Art of the Deal." Together, the couple raised three biological children, Jake Reiner, Nick, and Romy. Rob was also the adoptive father of Tracy Reiner, the daughter of his first wife, the late Penny Marshall.

He recalled, "I was homeless in Maine. I was homeless in New Jersey. I was homeless in Texas. I spent nights on the street. I spent weeks on the street. It was not fun."

At the time of that interview, Nick was 22, and he said he co-wrote a film loosely based on those experiences and 17 rehab stays, directed by his father. He described refusing further treatment at one point, adding, "If I wanted to do it my way and not go to the programs they were suggesting, then I had to be homeless."

Jake pursued a career in journalism rather than film, becoming a television news reporter. Speaking to the Houston Chronicle, he explained that the choice was driven by passion, not rebellion.
