King Charles, 77, and Queen Camilla, 78, arrived at St Asaph Cathedral in North Wales on Thursday for the annual Royal Maundy Service — and from the second their burgundy state car rolled to a stop, all eyes were on them.

Camilla stepped out a vision in navy, dressed in a richly embroidered long coat adorned with intricate floral beading across the bodice and sleeves.

She paired it with a wide-brimmed navy hat trimmed with a jewelled band of blue and gold detail, knee-high black suede boots, black leather gloves, and a classic structured black patent handbag.
A sapphire brooch at her chest completed the look — polished, regal, and quietly breathtaking.

Charles cut a distinguished figure in traditional morning dress: a black tailcoat worn over a double-breasted waistcoat, a crisp white shirt with a pale grey tie, and sharp grey pinstripe trousers. A white pocket square, gold pocket watch chain, and gleaming black Oxford shoes rounded out the timeless ensemble.

Together, they looked every inch the respected monarchs. But it was what happened between them — or rather, what didn't — that captured the internet's attention.

Footage from the arrival shows Charles stepping out of the vehicle first and striding forward to greet a uniformed official, leaving Camilla to navigate her own exit from the car — large hat, handbag, and all. She manages it perfectly well, but the optics were enough to ignite a full-blown online debate.

"The King gets out of the car & just walks away, leaving the queen to fend for herself!" one viewer fumed. Another wasted no time adding a pointed quip, "Hasn't he got exceptional manners 😂."

"I can't believe he didn't assist her," a third remarked, clearly unimpressed. "What a gentleman 🙁 Unbelievable," someone else agreed, dripping with sarcasm.

One viewer didn't hold back, saying, "He is so ignorant walks on without even looking back at her. So rude." Another chimed in more bluntly, "Nobody helped them out of the car."

One commenter laid on the irony thick, roaring, "I just love how he steps from the car and graciously turns to help his Queen from the car!!!"

"Could the King not just lend his wife a hand as they get out of the car? 🙄," another pressed. Someone else simply laughed, "I think it's funny that King Charles never waits for Queen Camilla, not even to help her out of the car! 🤣🤣🤣🤣."

A particularly pointed exchange unfolded when one viewer noted, "No one helps Camilla out of the car... (even though she manages fine.)" — to which another eagerly agreed, "First thing I noticed! He just pops out of the vehicle & never looks back!"

One observer offered a more charitable take, suggesting Charles may have been momentarily distracted. "The king was looking at the two soldiers one wore bright red/gold and other wore dark blue. And amid the debate, one viewer let a very different grievance surface, writing, "My stomach turns every time I see Camilla. I still have a difficult time understanding how a mistress became a queen. She is a disgrace. My personal thoughts and opinions."
The car door drama aside, the occasion itself was genuinely historic. The Royal Maundy Service — a tradition stretching back over 800 years — was held in North Wales for the very first time, and only the second time ever in Wales.

During the service, Charles distributed Maundy Money to 77 men and 77 women — the number matching his age — each receiving a red and a white purse in recognition of their Christian service and community contributions.

The visit comes just ahead of the Easter Sunday service at St George's Chapel, Windsor, where a royal family reunion awaits — with the Prince and Princess of Wales among those expected to attend.
