A quiet field of wildflowers. A little boy. And a mother whose face the world will never forget. On 15 March 2026, Prince William took to Instagram and shared a previously unseen photograph of the late Princess Diana in honour of Mother's Day in the UK.
The intimate picture, drawn from the Prince's private family collection, shows Princess Diana crouching amongst a sea of red poppies and wildflowers at Highgrove, the family's main home in Gloucestershire, England, with a two-year-old Prince William beside her.
It was taken in 1984 and had never previously been shown to the public. The caption, signed simply with a "W," read, "Remembering my mother, today and every day. Thinking of all those who are remembering someone they love today. Happy Mother's Day."
Princess Diana, who would have turned 65 this year, is captured in a relaxed, candid moment — no formal dress, no palace backdrop. Just a mother and her small son, surrounded by flowers.
The post drew over 737,000 likes within 21 hours and prompted an outpouring of responses online, with many readers moved by the timing and intimacy of the photograph.
"Gone but never forgotten, princess Diane [sic]," wrote one commenter. "It's hard to lose someone who has loved you all your life," said another. Several comments also touched on the absence of Prince Harry from the image, drawing a range of reactions.
"That'll upset Henry, he's not in the photo! (yes, I know he wasn't born yet, but it won't stop him whingeing) [sic]," quipped one netizen. Still, others were quick to push back. "She was his mother too [sic] not just Harry's," one commenter added plainly.
"The picture is beautiful very natural, it was taken before Harry was born, William can share what he like and certainly doesn't have to include his brother [sic]," shared another.
One reader pointed out a detail about the photograph itself, typing, "She was pregnant with Harry in this photo. No coincidence. Honestly boys. Settle your differences. You really and truly have no option."
As for the holiday acknowledgement, this is not the first time Prince William has marked Mother's Day with a tribute to his mother, who died in 1997 when her eldest son was just 15 years old.
He pays tribute to Princess Diana every year on the special day, regularly sharing a rare photograph of the two of them alongside a personal message. Prince Harry, for his part, has previously arranged for flowers to be laid at Princess Diana's grave on Mother's Day.
The tributes extend to the next generation, too. Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis have marked the occasion with home-made cards addressed to their "Granny Diana" in recent years — alongside celebrating their own mother, Catherine, Princess of Wales.
