The Heartbreaking Story of 3-Year-Old Morgan Ridler, Who Passed Away from Rare Cancer Days Before His Fourth Birthday
A little boy from Swansea never reached his fourth birthday — and when his parents sat before the nation on a Sunday evening to tell his story, it was the final detail that stopped viewers cold. His photographs are waiting for you further down.
Morgan Ridler passed away on 10th June 2023, aged three, after a two-year ordeal with stage 4 adrenocortical cancer, a condition so rare it affects just one in one million people.
His parents, Natalie and Matthew, appeared on the Stand Up To Cancer special, which aired on 22nd March 2026, and narrated their story of loss, moving viewers across the country to tears.
Morgan was, by his parents' account, a gentle and cheerful child. Happy and laid-back from birth, he was over the moon when his little sister Rhiannon arrived — and from the moment she came home, he barely left her side.
However, it was an unusual weight gain that first gave Natalie and Matthew pause. Their GP put it down to genetics; both parents are tall, six foot and six foot two respectively, so a bigger build was expected.
Still, the couple kept returning with more concerns. Eventually, extensive tests confirmed what they feared.
Morgan had stage 4 adrenal cortical cancer, and a 5% chance of survival.
He underwent surgery to remove a 14-centimetre tumour from his abdomen. His parents called the procedure gruelling but said Morgan came through it, describing him as the "strongest little boy ever."
Eight rounds of chemotherapy followed, finishing just after his third birthday. His scans came back clear. And for three months, the family dared to breathe.
Then, near Christmas, swelling appeared around his tummy again. More tumours had returned. Doctors told Natalie and Matthew there was nothing more that could be done. Matthew recalled:
"You switched into a sort of live every day, live as the last kind of mindset. And it was just, here's your son, just enjoy it."
In the aftermath, his parents were asked to prepare for end-of-life care. He was taken to Tŷ Hafan children's hospice in the Vale of Glamorgan, where he passed away 10 days before his fourth birthday.
What came after Morgan's passing gave his story an extraordinary dimension.
His cancer was linked to Li-Fraumeni syndrome, an inherited condition that leaves those who carry it highly vulnerable to rare and aggressive cancers. Matthew carries the gene mutation. And when the family decided to have Rhiannon tested, they discovered she had inherited it too.
Her risk of developing breast cancer stands at over 95 per cent. Her parents have already discussed a voluntary double mastectomy when she turns 16, a decision they say gives her "the best chance."
The segment moved viewers deeply, with many heading straight to social media to share their response.
One viewer addressed Morgan directly. "You were such a brave little warrior!!! Rest in Peace, sweet darling xxxx," they wrote.
Another drew on their own circumstances alongside their grief. "This is so sad, Morgan will be looking out for his Sister and will be protecting her from up above. My husband is fighting cancer now, it's so hard for us as adults, god only knows when it's a child, the pain must be immense. RIP little Morgan," they wrote.
For others, words barely came. "Omg hearing them speaking so heartbreaking such a beautiful family life is so cruel [sic]," one person posted.
One comment captured the rawest, most unfiltered reaction of all. "If there was a god why would he let children suffer," a viewer wrote.
The scale of what the family endured was not lost on others. "I cried watching this. For the parents and sister it was simply unimaginable what they went through, and still are. Absolutely heartbreaking," another said.
In Morgan's memory, his parents set up a charity in his name, raising thousands of pounds for families of children going through cancer treatment.
In their tribute, they wrote that although they wished things had been different, knowing their son had made them better people. "Although I wish this never happened to us I know that we are better people for having known and loved you. You've taught us to be more and love more."
