1. Monet's ghost
French painter Monet is famous across the world. So when fans thought they caught a glimpse of his ghost at the Cleveland Museum of Art during an exhibition of his work, it caused a bit of a stir. The museum’s director of architecture was taking photographs of the interior and ended up snapping a photo of this interesting character, who looks a LOT like Monet.
2. Lady Hampton Court
In 2015, twelve-year-old Holly was taking a snap of her cousin Brook as she walked through Hampton Court Palace in London. The next day, the girls looked through the photos and they were shocked. As Brook made her way into majestic King’s Apartments, they realised they hadn’t been the only ones in the room. A tall cloaked woman had been following Brook behind her. But in the next photo, the woman was gone.
3. Lizzie Borden's house
Lizzie Borden is one of America’s most notorious murderers. In 1892, she was charged for murdering her stepmother and father with an axe, and her former home has been rife with paranormal activity ever since. Many believe the shadow in the photo is Lizzie herself, but you can find out by staying at her house, which is now a Bed and Breakfast.
4. A Hospital in the UK
Hospitals have always been linked with ghosts- mainly because they’re so creepy! While this sighting at Leeds General Hospital, UK might not be the most well-known of ghost sightings, it’s one of the scariest. This photo was taken by a staff member at the hospital, and it shows a woman or child running through a door.
5. Robert A. Ferguson’s brother
At an L.A. spiritualist convention, Robert A. Ferguson took to the stage while someone in the crowd took his photo on a Polaroid camera. It turned out that Robert wasn’t alone in the picture, as another man resembling his brother Walter was right beside him. Here’s the thing, though. Walter died during World War II in 1944.
6. Party ghost
This is a pretty famous one. The little girl was crying because she felt someone push her- just seconds after she was “scared of the little boy” in the room. If you squint your eyes, you can see a small boy standing on the left-hand side of the image. The little girl had originally been standing where the ghost is seen in the image, so it seems like the ghost had pushed her out of the way…
7. First dance ghost
In a more recent ghost sighting, a couple celebrated their first dance at their wedding. In the corner of the image, you can see a little girl standing in the corner, just on the edge of the dancefloor. The picture was taken by notorious ghost chaser Toowoomba, who noticed the ghost of the little girl numerous times at the wedding.
8. The Toys R Us ghost
This Toys R Us IN Sunnyvale, California is believed to have been haunted for decades now. According to urban myth, the store was built where the Murphy farm once stood. A preacher named Johnny Johnson fell in love with Murphy’s daughter Elizabeth, but she wanted a lawyer instead. Johnson later died in an accident involving an axe, but his spirit roams around the land- and his spirit is pretty fond of throwing toys around.
9. Nottingham Galleries of Justice
This ghost sighting was caught by qualified parapsychologist Simon Brown. Here it seems like a ghost has actually walked through a wall at Nottingham’s Gallery of Justice, but at the time, Simon didn’t notice anything odd. It was only when he downloaded the photo on his computer that he saw the suspicious figure.
10. The Stanley Hotel ghost
The Stanley Hotel in Colorado inspired the Overlook from Stephen King’s classic horror novel, so it’s no surprise that has been the source of a LOT of ghost sightings. During his stay, tourist Henry Yau took a snap of the stairway, which shows a woman can be seen at the top of the stairs with a child beside her.
11. Jason Griffith's grandfather
Two years after Jason Griffiths’ grandfather, Alan Price, died, his family continues to feel his presence… or at least a ghostly presence! The famous ghosthunter’s family have reported some unusual activity in Alan’s old house, which is now owned by Jason’s uncle. Jason decided to investigate, and eventually managed to capture this snap of his grandad at the window.
12. Sefton Church
Churches are often linked to ghosts, but it’s not often we get an image of a “ghost” so clearly! In September 1999, two people who visited Sefton Church, Merseyside took this photo of a man dressed in black. The couple don’t remember anyone in the church at the same time as them, which makes things even odder.
12. The Queen's ghost
The Queen’s House in Greenwich, which is now part of the National Maritime Museum, seems to have its own ghost. Known as the Queen’s ghost, this otherworldly figure has been spotted numerous times on the Tulip Stairs. This photo was captured by Reverend Ralph Hardy in June 1966, who later held a séance on the staircase.
13. Charles Lakeman Tweedale and his wife
In a photo of Charles Lakeman Tweedale and his wife, the spirit of her late father can be seen looming over them in the background. The snap was taken by William Hope, who was one of the first people to ever specialise in spirit photography. There’s debate that some of his photos are fake, but this is one of the most convincing photos.
14. Ginerva King's ghost
Ginevra King was briefly involved with author Scott F. Fitzgerald when they were young. Her impact on Scott Fitzgerald was so great that it’s widely believed that she was the inspiration for Daisy Buchanan in the Great Gatsby, and it seems that her spirit might live on! This photo was taken outside Ginevra’s old summer house in Lake Forest, Illinois.
15. The Brown Lady of Raynham Hall
This is one of the most famous ghost photos of all time. The figure is supposed to be Lady Dorothy Walpole, the sister of Prime Minister Robert Walpole and the second wife of Charles Townshend. Apparently Townshend learned that Dorothy had an affair with nobleman Thomas Wharton, and Townshend was NOT happy about it. Holding a fake funeral for her, Townshend locked Dorothy up at Raynham Hall where she remained until her passing in 1726. She seems to favour a brown dress, hence the name “The Brown Lady”.
16. Spectre of Newby Church
In 1963, Reverend Kenneth F. Lord took this snap inside the Newby Hall’s Church of Christ the Consoler. The ghostly figure in the photo has become known as the Newby Monk, as well as the Spectre of Newby Church. Many have claimed the picture is fake, but some still believe that the church is haunted by a sixteenth-century monk.

18. Abraham Lincoln
This famous picture was taken by William H. Mumler, who’s thought of as the first-ever spirit photographer. The woman in the image is Abraham Lincoln’s mother Mary Todd Lincoln, and it seems that her son Abraham Lincoln is trying to put his hands on her shoulder. It’s been said that this photo was taken in 1869, and Mumler didn’t know Mr. Lincoln had been in his presence until after the photo was developed.
19. The Amityville Ghost
Ronald DeFeo Jr. killed his six family members in 1974. Just over a year after the murders took place, the DeFeo house was bought by the Lutz family, who left after 28 days due to alleged paranormal activity. This would all provide the basis for “The Amityville Horror” books and films we know and love. In the image, you can see a small boy, who is believed to be John Matthew DeFeo, Ronald’s brother.
20. Freddy Jackson
What looked like an ordinary photo eventually turned into one of the most puzzling pictures of all time. This image of a Royal Air Force squadron, depicts the ghost of air mechanic Freddy Jackson in the background. Two days before the photo was taken in 1919, Jackson tragically died in an aeroplane propeller accident…
21. Lord Combermere
In 1891, the 2nd Viscount Combermere was laid to rest. But it seemed that he reappeared at his house during his funeral, and was found sitting in his favourite chair in the Abbey library. His sister-in-law had set up a camera with an hour-long exposure in the library during the Viscount’s funeral, and all the staff were out of the house at the time.
22. Ghost on train tracks
According to urban myth, a school bus stalled on these San Antonio tracks in the 1930s or 40s. A train suddenly charged into the bus, resulting in the deaths of several children aboard. In one version, the bus driver survived the crash. Wracked with guilt, the driver tried to take his own life by waiting on the tracks for another train, but the ghosts of the children pushed the car to safety.
23. Manila ghost
In the early 2000s, this photo became famous. Two friends had a photo taken together while they were on a night out in Manila, the Philippines, and it seems like they had company! The ghostly figure on the right-hand side of the image appears to be grabbing one girl’s arm as the snap was taken. Spooky stuff.
24. W.T. Stead
This photo was taken by Richard Boursnell, who became famous thanks to his spirit photographs. Here he’s taken a snap of William Thomas Stead, but there seems to be another figure standing next to him. The ghost was identified as Piet Botha, a Boer soldier who died in the South African War, but there’s debate about whether this is actually true.
25. Beach ghost
This is one of the most famous ghost photos on the internet. While a man was having his photograph taken on the beach, it seems like a shadowy figure has decided to join him. On the right-hand side of the image, you can just about see a human figure walking towards the man on the left. Paranormal activity or a trick of the light?
26. Tantallon Castle
When a tourist visited Tantallon Castle in Scotland, he noticed a curious figure dressed in period costume on one of the castle’s balconies. He swears that there were no other tourists in the area at the time, and there were no mannequins or puppets either. Experts went on to label the incident “very curious”.
27. A shadowy figure
While a couple were posing for a romantic photo after an evening out, a shadowy figure decided to join them. Some have claimed that the black figure is a result of the camera’s twilight double exposure as a passer-by walked into the frame of the image, but paranormal enthusiasts have claimed this photo is legit.
28. Ghost in the car
At first glance, it seems like there’s not much going on in this photo. But if you zoom into the image carefully, you’ll see the face of a shadowy figure in the left-wing mirror. It appears to be the face of a woman, and she looks pretty terrifying. The owner of the car claims there was nobody in the vehicle at the time the snap was taken.
29. Party crasher
This might be the scariest ghost photo we’ve seen so far. While two women happily posed with their sons at a family party in the 1950s, they were joined by a horrifying figure dangling from the ceiling. The women and the boys are completely oblivious to the strange visitor, which was probably for the best.
30. Grandpa's ghost
On the 17
th August 1997, Denise Russell took a snap of her grandma, who lived alone at the time. Even though the photo had been developed, copied and given to other family members, nobody noticed the male figure standing over her until three years later. The family have said it's a spitting image of their grandpa who died in 1984.
