He's Only 30 Years Old
Image Source / IMDbAustin Butler has achieved a lot as such a young age. Starring in a biopic like Elvis at only 30 years old means you've pretty much made it and can probably retire now. Austin was born in August 1991, in Anaheim, California.
His Natural Hair Colour Is Blonde
Image Source / Teen VogueYou've probably seen Butler with quite a few different hairstyles and different hair colours, so what's his natural colour? Understandably, for the Elvis movie, he had to dye his hair black to portray the King, but he's actually a natural blonde.
That's Actually Him Singing In The Elvis Movie
Image Source / Good HousekeepingJust because you're the perfect actor for a role doesn't mean you're also an epic singer - so you might have been wondering whether the singing voice for Elvis in the biopic was actually Butler or not. But it was! His voice was for young Elvis, but the mid-life Elvis in the film was a blend of Austin's voice and tape recordings of Presley.
He Sang Unchained Melody For His Elvis Audition
Image Source / DiscogsAnd he didn't just talk for his audition, either - he sang too (which makes sense when you're auditioning for the King). In his audition tape, he sang a rendition of Unchained Melody that impressed director Baz Luhrmann so much that he decided then to give the role to Austin.
He Beat A Fair Few Other Actors For The Role Of Elvis
Image Source / Vanity FairFor such a huge role as the King of Rock and Roll, there are bound to be a lot of actors wanting the part. Austin beat a lot of other actors, including Harry Styles, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Miles Teller. Baz Luhrmann apparently said that with Austin he'd found someone who could 'embody the spirit' of Elvis.

The Actor's Audition Tape Actually Had A Sadder Meaning: His Mother's Death
Image Source / Rolling Stone UKAfter suffering from a nightmare relating to his mother's death, Butler had gotten out of bed to go to the piano, maybe seeking music to calm himself or deal with the grief. It's then that he played and sang Unchained Melody to his mother's memory - and it would be this tape submitted as his Elvis audition.
His Apartment Was Turned Into A 'Detective Scene' For His Role Prep
Image Source / Salon.comIf you'd gone into Austin's apartment during his prep for the role, you'd be forgiven for thinking he was a detective trying to hunt down Elvis - with pictures of the King plastered all over the walls, from many different ages and many different periods of his life, so that Butler could dig deeper into the character.
He Got Emotional Meeting Priscilla Presley
Image Source / IndieWireI think we'd all get emotional meeting a legendary icon like Priscilla Presley, the woman married to Elvis himself. In meeting with Priscilla for the first time in preparation for his role, Butler said "she looked like an angel" and left the meeting with tears in his eyes!
Things you didn't know about the Elvis movie: it took years to get the movie out there
The Elvis movie actually came as quite a surprise for most of us when it was announced, because it was one of those we might never have really expected, and also hadn't really heard any teasers about. In actual fact, the Elvis biopic movie was a long time coming, because it had already been put into motion quite a few years before its release. It was back in 2014 when the idea was first acknowledged, and then Baz Lurhmann was just 'in talks' to direct it, with Kelly Marcel being the writer. That was as much as anybody knew until the movie was officially announced years later in 2019, with Baz but a different screenwriter.
Elvis wasn't actually the first to be cast!
You'd think for a biopic of this scale, with such an important main character, that you'd need to know you'd nailed the Elvis casting first to go on to casting anybody else, to make sure you had the solid foundation down and had chemistry between all the main actors. But as these things go, sometimes the most important character can be the last to be cast! Austin wasn't the last to be cast, but he wasn't the first. Tom Hanks was actually the very first actor to be cast, and it was officially announced he'd be playing Colonel Tom Parker at the same time the official announcement of the film was made. So now they just needed an Elvis to Hanks's Parker.
And Austin Butler had celebrity support
While Austin had had acting experience before, he was still a relative unknown in the grand scheme of things when he was cast as Elvis - and there were more well known actors or musicians considered for the role of Elvis before Austin Butler, like Harry Styles, which many people might have expected to be cast due to the musical background. When Butler made that seriously impressive audition tape - as well as being easy on the eyes in terms of playing the King - it was very much guaranteed that he would get the part. But not only that - he had celebrity support for the role in the form of Denzel Washington, who called director Baz to put a good word in!
Tom Hanks caught COVID during this movie
It still feels strange to think about the height of the COVID pandemic, and back when it was not only affecting everyday lives, but seriously delaying movie and TV productions, too. And then there was the news about various celebrities catching COVID-19 - which is inevitable, really, when they're going to film sets every day. If you're a Tom Hanks fan - or just keep up to date with celebrity news - you might remember Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson announcing that they'd tested positive for COVID. It was actually during the filming of this movie that Hanks caught it.
Some roles were also re-cast due to COVID delays
And, of course, that wasn't the only disruption that COVID-19 caused during the filming of this movie, during the height of the pandemic. There were a couple of roles that had to be re-cast from their original actors due to the serious delays. Because of Hank's positive test result, shooting of the movie was delayed until 2020. On top of that, the original actors who were to play Elvis's parents - Maggie Gyllenhaal and Rufus Sewell - were then hit with scheduling conflicts because of having to wait for the Elvis movie to get back on track, so the roles had to be recast.
Butler and Hanks exchanged letters in character
A lot of actors go through at least some method acting away from set, and it's up to them if they want to do it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, or just through little exercises! For Tom Hanks and Austin Butler, it was about writing letters to each other off set, but in character as Elvis and Colonel Tom Parker. Sometimes writing things down can be a great way to get into character! It all started with Hank's love of traditional typewriters - he already had one, so he got one as a gift for Butler during the movie, too. They would write letters to each other in character using the typewriters!
There's a longer cut of the movie
We know that every film comes with a painful editing process, a bunch of bonus deleted scenes that you can usually find years later on YouTube, and - if you're Lord of the Rings - officially released extended editions! For Elvis, the theatrical release is still quite long, at two and a half hours which is pretty much a 'long' standard for general movies. But there is actually a much longer cut out there, said to be rocking in at around four hours, which includes some more details of key moments in Elvis's life, like when he met Richard Nixon.
Butler shared a painful connection with Elvis
As we mentioned, Butler went through the painful experience of losing his mother at a very young age, which he tapped into for his audition tape of him singing Unchained Melody. Butler then found out that Elvis Presley not only lost his mother at a young age, too, but he was also 23 years old when it happened - just like Butler. Butler used this to tap into that mentality for his role as Elvis, and used that pain and grief to put into his performance as Elvis - the same pain and grief the King must have felt about his mother, too.
There were A LOT of wardrobe changes
This isn't really surprising when you think about how many different looks and outfits Elvis had on stage, and for his performances. And for a movie with a wow factor - and especially a Baz Lurhmann movie - you're going to expect a lot of memorable outfits. And it didn't disappoint! There were around 90 different costumes that Austin Butler had to wear as Elvis throughout the 2 hour+ movie! And did Butler get to keep them all? No, but he did get to keep at least one of them. It was the black leather outfit that Elvis wears for his comeback!
Bassist Adam Dunn had a lot of work to do
Adam Dunn was cast in the role of Elvis Presley's bassist, Bill Black (you might not have even know Elvis had an official bassist seeing as he always looked like a one man band stealing the spotlight!). Although Adam Dunn is a bass player in real life, he still had his work cut out for this movie. Although he was a bass guitar player, he'd never played a double bass before, so he had to rent out one before his audition just to get through it! Luckily he did, and once he was cast, he spent three months buckling down to learn to play it efficiently - 8 hours a day, every day!
This wasn't the first time Hanks had crossed paths with 'Elvis'...
While Tom Hanks has definitely never starred in a movie about Elvis's life before, there was one famous movie he starred in about another man's life: Forrest Gump, of course! The movie saw Forrest stumbling through a lot of important historical moments, and meeting a lot of famous people without knowing who they were. And one famous person in particular? There is a scene of the movie where Tom Hanks as Forrest bumps into a certain King and appears to sort of teach him how to dance... so this is the second time Hanks has played someone being an influence in Elvis's life!
There was a lot of work on Austin's eyes for the movie
They do say that most acting and emotion comes from the eyes, but for Austin Butler's eyes in this movie, it was about more than that - they had to look like Elvis's eyes! For the movie, Austin dyed his hair from his natural blonde color, but what was still hanging around were his natural blonde eyelashes! This wouldn't do for Elvis, so a lot of work had to be put into his eye makeup to make it right for the movie. His eyelashes had to be dyed as well to match his hair, and they also made the actor wear two sets of fake lashes and a lot of eyeliner!
It was surprisingly successful for a biopic
That isn't to say that biopics can't be successful, but in the world of films, usually biopics can be hit and miss - not only because you're depending on an audience actually liking that person in the first place and being interested in their life, but then you have to depend on an accurate portrayal, the right actors to look like their real life counterparts, and then people (or family members) complaining about how accurate it is! For Elvis, it was actually very successful, coming in second as the highest grossing biopic after Bohemian Rhapsody.
It passed the family check
One of the main worries you can have, both as an actor playing a real life person (with a real life family) and as the writer/director of a biopic movie, is how the family is going to react. Sometimes it can be disappointing if the world loves it, but their ex wife, husband or kids hated it. For Elvis, they had the likes of Priscilla Presley to impress, who lived that story. The good news is the movie definitely had the family's approval! Priscilla, as well as Elvis's daughter Lisa Marie, and Elvis's granddaughter all responded positively to both the movie, and Austin's portrayal.
Baz Lurhmann actually wanted an 'America' focus rather than a 'biopic' focus
Director Baz Lurhmann was very clear that he didn't want the film to be labelled as a 'rock biopic', or at the very least called that by people, in the same vein as Bohemian Rhapsody. Even though the movie very much is a musical biopic, the director had another focus for what he wanted to create: namely, a snapshot into life in America in that particular era. He was very much focused on not just presenting Elvis's life, but how Elvis's existence during that social time of the 1950s changed things, and people's reaction to that. He wanted a look into the culture of that time, too.
Tom Hanks might have had regrets
Tom Hanks's performance as Colonel Tom Parker was met with very mixed reviews - the majority being negative, or just confused by his portrayal - but that's not why the actor regretted saying yes to the role. Hanks originally said he wasn't overly interested in playing a 'bad guy' in any type of movie, but he was eventually convinced to take the part by Baz Lurhmann. The main source of Hank's regret was actually after he saw a picture of the real Colonel Tom Parker, and realized just how much prosthetic makeup he would have to wear!
The reason Harry Styles was overlooked
The problem with being very famous and very successful at what you do in the showbiz world is that nobody is going to ever see you as anything but that. Which is why Harry Styles - even though he's had great success in an acting career so far - was passed over for the role of Elvis. According to Baz, Harry was such a successful big deal that people would just see him as Harry Styles in the movie rather than Elvis. And it's true - even when we watch Harry in any movie, we're very much aware we're watching Harry Styles.
The soundtrack is iconic (not just because of the Elvis songs)
The soundtrack of the movie for the year it came out was actually one of the biggest soundtracks of that year, in terms of how many stars were singing on it. Alongside the Elvis songs making the in-movie soundtrack, the general soundtrack for the film was kitted out with some huge names in the music business, making it a seriously impressive movie soundtrack. It was expected to be so popular that big music stars were actually asking to be on the soundtrack so they could cover their favorite Elvis song, including Stevie Nicks, Doja Cat and CeeLo Green.
Priscilla Presley was very sceptical at first
Although Priscilla and her family came out of the movie singing its praises and being extremely happy with the biopic, and of Austin Butler's portrayal of Elvis, that wasn't to say that she didn't have doubts at first. It's understandable when you think she learned a young actor would be playing the man she knew and she loved, you're bound to have some doubts that anybody else would be able to take on that role. Baz Luhrmann himself commented about how sceptical Priscilla had been about Austin "pulling it off", and it made the first screening all the more nerve-wracking. Luckily, it all worked out!
It was made with the big screen in mind
Some movies are just made for the theater screen rather than your iPad screen while you're tucked up in bed. In the case of Baz Luhrmann, his movies - like Moulin Rouge - are definitely made for the biggest screen you can find in terms of the amazing sets, costumes and performances. Elvis was definitely made with the theater screen in mind, and Baz definitely had his big movie planned to be a 'theatrical experience' in the traditional cinema setting. That isn't to say you can't enjoy the movie at home, of course - just maybe buy a bigger TV!
