Women Who Waved Goodbye To Hair Removal and Embraced Their Natural Bodies

By Sarah Smith 1 year ago

Welcome to the revolution

Source: The GuardianRuby Jones is the co-founder of Januhairy. After tragically developing a cerebrospinal fluid leak in 2018, which caused her serious pain whenever she sat or stood, she found herself bewildered at why she was still wasting vitally needed energy to remove body hair. Going a salon was exhausting, but after giving it all up she says she can now "use that energy on other things that make me happy." She even missed it when she shaved in Feb and immediately grew it back again!

A student's realisation

Laura Jackson (the other co-founder of Januhairy) was prepping for a one-woman stage show during her time at university about the "pressures put on women to abide by these beauty rules to feel accepted." As a result, she went on to grow out her hair. Without that incentive she says she'd never have done it, but now she feels utterly liberated and it serves as a reminder "of my love for myself.” Yes!

Princess of change

Actress Emma Corrin is arguably the perfect choice to play the Princess of Hearts, Diana Princess of Wales, in Netflix's "The Crown." Diana was herself an undeniably glam ambassador for change and gorgeous Emma seems to be doing her bit for the natural look revolution. "I haven't done it before because I've been in a relationship and I guess I had been programmed to think that I should probably shave for the benefit of both parties," she told Refinery29. "But f*** it — I don't really want to shave! I realised, 'why did I ever bother?'"

Trolls: Will they ever shut up?

Quite appallingly, many of the women we will feature in this article have been attacked online for daring to accept their natural selves (we're ready to bet the majority of these horrendous individuals, cowering behind their screens, are not even close to being 10/10, in any respect.) Actress Lola Kirke shared on her Instagram that the scum had gone as far as to send her death threats after she appeared on the red carpet at the 2017 Golden Globes, wearing a gorgeous pink number and her armpits proudly naturale. For shame (them, not her.)

Barbados Babe

Ok this is perhaps not as obvious as Ruby, Laura or Emma, but people still feel the need to zone in on even the slightest suggestion of body hair, especially on mega-celebs. Several reporters have highlighted Rhianna's "unshaven legs" in this pic, but hey, it's Rhianna. Firstly, she can literally pull off anything, and secondly it's day 2/3 stubble at best? Leave the girl alone!

Insta-warriors

It's not all celebs (and we really should know better than to blindly copy them anyway...) Kaya Szulczewska has taken to her Insta profile to promote healthier view of women's body hair. "I have never felt comfortable with these body hair struggles, which caused my constant suffering. I could see they did not make any sense, but I still thought they were necessary; that I was not allowed to do otherwise," she told Metro.

Who do we do it for?

Source: Metro
She also goes onto address questions about whether her partner still finds her attractive now she's embraced the natural look. "He told me he had been wondering for a long time why I kept removing my body hair while having skin problems. After all, hair is more attractive than inflammation and pus-filled pimples." She's got a point...

Bare under there? Not anymore...

British model and actress Cara Delevingne took things to a new level when she revealed on Instagram that, despite undergoing laser treatment to permanently remove her armpit hair, she had found a solution for her new film "Her Smell." Who would have guessed it: armpit wigs! We won't lie, they don't sound as comfy as the natural option.

Red carpet ready

Knockout Amandla Stenberg turned heads in more than just the usual way when they graced the red carpet at the European premiere of "The Hate U Give" with unshaven armpits. Never one to adhere to usual gender norms, Amandla was well aware of the storm they would cause, captioning their Instagram debut with "#drama #armpit."

Brands may, slowly, be following suit

Women's razor companies have been forced to shift their marketing lately, have you noticed? We've certainly spotted the slow reduction in the odd phenomenon of super-shiny models shaving already hairless legs. Gillette recently took a 3% hit in organic sales and may well have to reassess their branding strategy of their "Venus" range. On the other hand, razor start up "Billie" raised $35 million, bizarrely with a pro-body hair image. "We wanted to be a body brand for women, and we sell razors, but we didn't want to tell women that they had to be hairless,” co-founder Georgina Gooley told USA TODAY. Nice one.

"Because I want to"

Violet makes an excellent point on her Insta. Most people don't care. She reflects that, after the initial "why?" is met with "because I don't want to [shave]", people don't question it. "I love my body just how it comes and I will not let other people’s ideas about how I should look affect how I feel about myself,' she writes. Amazing.

You do you

No one ever said you have to choose: hair or no hair. Really it's like demanding people pick one hair style and stick with it. Our fav barista has turquoise, very close cut hair and do we care? No, she looks great and makes awesome lattes. Anyway, Bella Thorne is always going to do her own thing - she frequently makes this clear on Insta. This includes being 100% comfortable sharing pics of her legs to her story which are way less shaved than Rhianna. Don't challenge her on it - she will fight back (as her captions frequently show!)  She refuses to be "waxed and oiled up AT ALL TIMES."

The hair police strike

Seriously man, who actually has the time to scour pics of famous babes with a magnifying glass, looking for even the smallest suggestion of body hair? This is apparently what happened here. Can you see Cardi B's stomach hair? No, we can't either, but people really got heir knickers in a twist over it. If it's there, it's there. Deal with, she obviously has.

With a cheeky smile

The Girls
star Jemima Kirke mirrored her sister's resolve by forgoing shaving for the Metropolitan Opera Opening Night Gala in 2017. She clearly anticipated a reaction when she threw that pose, just look at that knowing smile. Go on, be shocked... we dare you.

Adele, living in the real world, as per

Adele further and forever endured herself to her many, many female fans when she told Vanity Fair that she once went a month (on tour) without sharing her legs. Given her preference for long, swooshing ball gowns, there's no need, surely? When the sadly inevitable follow-up question "how does your [now ex] husband feel about that?" came, Adele's reply was, well, it was glorious: “I’ll have no man telling me to shave my f***ing’ legs. "Shave yours.” Amen, sister.

That's so Gaga

If you've read our article "Most Bizarre Demands in Celeb's Contracts and Tour Riders" (if you haven't, you should), you'll know that Lady Gaga has an odd relationship with dyed pubic hair. Apparently her armpits are open to receiving a similar treatment, even if we must assume that glorious, turquoise mop to be fake (you're not alone, Cara Delevingne). She's not all about the wigs though, she's been known to proudly flash hair in other areas on Instagram too.

Still gonna strike that pose

Emily Ratajkowski isn't going to let other people's views on her body hair stop her hitting her angles in a shoot. Writing for Harper's Bizaare, she explains "for me, body hair is another opportunity for women to exercise their ability to choose... sometimes letting my body hair grow out is what makes me feel sexy. And there is no right answer, no choice that makes me more or less of a feminist.'

The hair police, again

Source: Glamour
This was kind of outrageous. A "fan" (short here for freaking anarchic numskull) decided it was perfectly acceptable to superimpose a sticker with "LOL" over Halsey's slightly unshaven armpits. Her reply, like Adele's, was beautiful. “It’s an armpit you’ve put a sticker over. Not sure what else there is here to explain?” Boom.

"Sexier than ever"

Source: The Mirror
Esther Calixte-Bea, of Montreal, spoke to The Mirror of how she was left feeling suicidal prior to embracing herself who who she is. The 24 year old says she would spend excessive amounts of time waxing and shaving her chest hair before school which left her in a great deal of discomfort. But after discovering that her Grandmother's tribe considered being hairy as a sign of beauty, she decided to "be me" and has never felt "sexier or more comfortable" in her own skin.

Do what makes
you
happy

Julia Michaels had a very clear message for everyone on her Instagram page re: her body hair choices. After her solid point that "people are always going to have something to say about you or your body. They will always try to attack you when you're feeling the most happy or the most yourself you've ever been." She followed it up with anyone who still felt the need to shame her could "go eat a bag of worms." Agreed.

Make a contest out of it

Paris Jackson cares in no way what you or anyone else thinks of her body hair. She'll frequently strut the red carpet with her hairy armpits proudly on show and recently upped the anti with this beaut: "If you're not competing with your brother over who can grow longer leg hair wyed [what you even doing]."

Magic personified

Emma Watson is the hero of a lot of girls of a certain age. Not just because, well, she's Hermione, but now because she's brought her magic to the human rights stage too. Anyway, it's great to see her not bothering to charm her arm hair invisible. We all have it (more obviously at this time of year, we find) but the temptation to let it bother us is still a constant nag. Thank you, Emma.

Pioneers

Let's not be fooled into thinking this is a recent thing (well, women have always had body hair but you know what we mean.) British actress Julia Roberts was turning heads as early as 1999. She wasn't really planning on making a huge impact however. She since revealed she'd miscalculated the length of her sleeve, but she was happy with the point that "as a human on the planet," she was always making some kind of statement.

The Queen of Pop

Madonna was making a deliberate statement back in 2014 however. Always one striding out for change and body acceptance, she struck this pose for
L’Uomo Vogue
with the caption “Long hair…… Don’t Care!!!!!! #artforfreedom #rebelheart#revolutionoflove.”  Impressive length given she's comfortably into her 60s.

Definitely a woman now

We've all followed Miley Cyrus' transformation from Hannah Montana to the err post-Robin Thick version of herself shall we say. Interesting dancing choices aside, you've got love her. Here she is, looking fantastic and breaking the internet in 2015 with her liberated pits. We all know, she

It won't stop your game at the gym

Middle daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, Scout Willis, is no stranger to flaunting her body hair on social media. Pictured here leaving the gym (we'd be delighted to look that good on the way in tbh), Scout takes the phrase 'natural beauty' to a whole new level.

No amount of rock climbing or leg hair is going to get in the way of Bekah Mertinez's rock hard beliefs that she is "beautiful, attractive and feminine, no matter where [she] has hair on her body." We couldn't agree more - she is a right stunner. A great example to her baby girl, as she is throwing her all into being.

Who cares - that dress is AMAZING!

Modern Family
's Sarah Hyland has often been a vocal advocate for positive body image. After being born with under-developed kidneys as a result of kidney dysplasia, she had a transplant tin 2012. The medication she now has to take has some very nasty side effects, including hair loss. Being the hero she is, she pushes through the trolling about her weight and, like Emma, embraces her natural hair where she feels able and when her meds permit it.

Aw well, I'm wearing the top anyway

Pixie Lott isn't going to let missing a few days shaving get in the way of her wardrobe choices or her winning smile! The Brit literally could not seem to careless, which helps gives us the confidence to forgo the danger of razor burn on a rushed Monday morning.

Liberate your soul

Monica has built up an impressive Insta following after a string of arguments with her mum led her to swearing off shaving ever again (it was basically the whole "you'll never get a boyfriend if..." chestnut.) Seven years later, she's not only made it up with her mum, she's also inspired over 33k followers to love themselves for who they are, as they are. Hero.
