1. iCarly - Reading Fifty Shades Of Grey!
Image source: IngurWe would never have believed there would or could be a reference to 'Fifty Shades Of Grey' in any kids' show. In iCarly, Gibby's brother, Guppy, is seen reading 'Nifty Shades Of Beige'! His reactions and facial expressions, whilst funny, are a bit close to the knuckle!
2. Victorious - Subtle Jokes On Puberty
Depending on how old you were when you were watching Victorious was the fine line between whether or not you fully understood this joke! Subtle, but for those who were in their teens they would have got this joke almost instantly. I am sure some parents overhearing this were in for a laugh!
3. iCarly - apartment number is shaped like a man part
An 8 = D is pretty much the universal text code for a man's private parts! Are you all with me on this? Freddie's apartment number can be interpreted as something quite different so from a number to a member if you know what I mean. How many noticed this little snippet?
4. Doug - Inappropriate Sign
Eagle eyed viewers will have noticed this instantly, but it was likely you were too young at the time to fully understand what this meant! As a kid you probably wouldn't have given this a second glance, but now you can definitely see the funny side of it. I bet parents were laughing to themselves!

Out of all the Nickelodeon shows, 'The Ren & Stimpy Show' takes the biscuit as the most unsuitable with its innuendos. In season 2, there's an episode where Stimpy and Sven are in a wardrobe (closet) together. Stimpy proclaims he is a 'sword swallower'. Nothing more to say on that!
9. Rocko's Modern Life - adult hotline ....
Here we are with yet another adult joke from 'Rocko's Modern Life'. As Rocko had lost his job at the comic store he starts looking for new employment ad it's not easy. Image source Amazon.com
The weird but lovable Gibby, in 'iCarly' always appeared to have his shirt off, during the earlier seasons. Gibby isn't wearing a belt and his trousers fall down, causing chaos on the show.

There are always loads of jokes going around concerning women's body parts! In 'Drake & Josh' these puns are featured so much that the two main characters are dubbed as them by sister Megan. In the episode 'Peruvian Puff Pepper', Josh is following instructions for making salsa. He is told to hold the tomatoes like a fine woman and hurriedly puts them down, apologising to the 'woman'!
13. Rugrats - cutting the cord!
Even a cartoon about babies is not completely safe from adult humour. During the first 'Rugrats' movie, the babies at the hospital break out into song, with Patti Smith as the baby that started off this innuendo and then Iggy Pop telling her she's lucky! Crazy and hilarious!
14. Drake & Josh Go Hollywood - makes a boob ....

One of Nickelodeon's modern kids' shows that touches on adult humour pretty much the same as Ren & Stimpy', is 'Sanjay and Craig'. In an episode entitled 'Serpentco', the two of them are in the bathroom where there is a drawing of a pickle .... only it doesn't look like a pickle!
16. Rocko's Modern Life - Dr. Unsuitable!
For the classic 'Rocko's Modern Life', you can bet there are going to be lots of 'in jokes' that only adults will get. One of the characters' names is a simple, but yet very inappropriate pun and that would be the crazy Dr Bendova! Say his name without the 'doctor' and you'll realise it's wholly inappropriate - but funny!
17. Amanda - you got crabs?
Penelope Taint is the dedicated but crazy number one fan of Amanda. She would go out of her way to meet her, even getting a bloodhound to track her down. In one instance the dog finds a dancing lobster and Penelope asks the dog she hired, 'I ask for Amanda, and you give me crabs!'
18. Henry Danger - down on one knee ....
Henry Danger may not be quite up to the usually high standard of Dan Schneider's other works but there are definitely some humorous jokes dotted around. There's an awkward scene where Captain Man and Kid Danger are in a pose where it looks like there's a marriage proposal. Only thing is, the positioning looks a little unsavoury, shall we say
19. Rocko's Modern Life - dirty mags!
This image gives all new meaning to that phrase 'hard at work!' They even went as far as showing him 'pulling the lever,' just in case anyone happened to miss the subtlety. Love the title of the adult mag - Playslug and that's why grown ups watch this show!
20. Animaniacs - is that finger prints?

While it didn't originally air on Nickelodeon until 2001, having been on Fox Kids, 'Animaniacs' was a very clever and entertaining show and its jokes were definitely on point. One of the most memorable ones was having Dot find Prince, although Yakko was actually saying 'fingerprint'!
21. Rocko's Modern Life - choking the ....
'Rocko's Modern Life' introduced another of its regular euphemisms although this one was sailing a bit close to the wind. The restaurant down town was called 'Chokey Chicken'. Please don't ask me to explain why this is so gross because I refuse to! well... you know...
22. Rugrats - cradle attraction
Not so much a z rated re-make of 'Fatal Attraction' but probably a J or K - young viewers wouldn't blink an eye at the name of the episode but us adults who were transfixed on Michael Douglas and Glenn Close in the mega blockbuster would respect the humour. It was pretty much a shot-for-shot G-rated remake of
Fatal Attraction. What's worse is that I didn't find out until almost 20 years later.
23. Hey Arnold! - "girlhood tremble" ....
e
As we all know, Helga is head over heels in love with Arnold despite her behaviour towards him in public. One famous scene, extremely risque, involved her saying how Arnold made her girlhood tremble. Straight over the heads, obviously, of youngsters, this was an unexpected phrase to hear on a kids' show.
24. Hey, Arnold! - timing is everything!
The sign on its own isn't even worth a mention had grandpa just been standing next to Arnold, with an empty fence at his back. However, put the two of them together and all becomes clear. That's what so great about American shows like this; they give the adults something to laugh about.
25. Hey, Arnold! - too much pop?
Helga's mother was always making smoothies, being unsteady on her feet and slurring her words. She would fall asleep at random times and even more random places! 27. Hey, Arnold! - Mr Simmons' sexuality
Mr. Simmons is gay although he never comes out in the show. The 90s may not have been such an understanding time but isn't it great that the creators included so much diversity in this slice of life comedy. Sad to think that only 30 years ago so much was unacceptable.
28. Ren & Stimpy - opposites attract
If you grew up in the 90s, you will be more than aware of the insane storylines and exaggerated animations. The weird word of a Chihuahua and a Manx cat was wilder than anything else on the telly at the time and loved to shock and depress us at the same time. Kids, on the other hand, thought it was just a lot of fun!
29. Rocko's Modern Life - sell your soul
The episode 'Leap Frogs' shows Rocko's neighbour, Mrs. Bighead, attempt to seduce a wallaby while her husband was away at work. For innocent children, they were entertained by the storyline but for adults it showed a darker side to the show.
30. Rugrats - trivia ....
Melanie Chartoff, the voice actress who played Didi Pickles, spoke about when she learned an awful truth about the show's animators. Apparently, the crew would 'let off steam' by drawing risqué images of Didi in the men's restroom. Painted on the stalls were depictions of the character in suggestive leather gear, complete with whips and chains. Well, I never ....
31. Doug - something's erupting ....
Before 'Doug' transferred to the Disney channel, you could watch the show on Nickelodeon. A few naughty innuendos were sure to be found to older viewers. In the episode 'Doug Gets Busted', his volcano literally shoots up lava, when Patty gets close. Are we talking volcanos here or someone getting excited!!
32. Don't Drop The Soap, Gary
These are wise words from SpongeBob SquarePants to his pet snail, Gary, but what he was really saying was an extremely outdated and homophobic joke about men showering together in prison - and bending over to collect the dropped soap...
33. Rocko's Modern Life Spank The Monkey Game
Image Source / Eggabase | The Easter Egg Database
Spank the what now? Oh right. That. So it turns out that the characters from Rocko's Modern Life really enjoy a game called Spank the Monkey - which involved a turtle and cow using paddles to spank a plastic monkey. So do with that what you will.
34. Grandpa Lou From Rugrats Is A Fan Of Alien Porn
I mean, general porn would be 'adult theme' enough to sneak into an episode of Rugrats, but turns out Grandpa Lou is a fan of green space vixens. Not just that, but apparently they're 'lonely' space vixens, too...
35. Try Grandpa's Sausage
Err... I think I'll pass, but yeah, this sign in Hey Arnold isn't very subtle. The sign itself is problematic, but the fact that Grandpa chooses that exact moment to come around the fence and stand right in the place the arrow is pointing... yeah.
36. Roger Doesn't Know About Sex
So apparently Roger from Doug didn't get the birds and the bees talk from his parents - and that's on them and not him - after his cat gave birth to a litter of kittens and he didn't really understand what was going on, or how.
37. Nut Suckers
As any gamer will tell you, some choice words are spoken - or shouted at the screen - whilst playing video games that aren't going your way. Well, for Doug, this was the aptly chosen "Nut Suckers" insult.
38. Gay Handkerchief Code
So it turns out that Judy, Doug's sister, knows gay code - and specifically, gay handkerchief code, which she reveals when she advises where exactly to position a handkerchief and warns about putting it on the left. Interesting advice, Judy...
39. Slapping Your Tail In The Bathtub
Well, we've had spanking the monkey, so why not slapping the tail? So in The Angry Beaver's, Norb's dad speaks openly about the times he used to hear him "slapping his tail in the bathtub". And not just once, but all the time. But Norb claims he was simply washing it... yeah, that's what they all say.
40. Nudie Magazine For Daffy Duck
Oh, look at that very obvious copy of PlayDuck that Daffy appears to be openly enjoying in this episode of Tiny Toon Adventures! Honestly, looking at these as an adult now, it's so obvious!
41. A Bit Of Male Bonding
Nothing wrong with a bit of male bonding! But the surprising thing here was the very specific finger movement which Stu in Rugrats decided to make when explaining that Phil and Lil's dad had gone for some "male bonding"...
42. When Grandpa Boris Wanted To Die
This is a very dark joke indeed, which is easily missed, even by adults if you don't know who Dr. Kevorkian is. When Grandpa Boris got very, very bored watching Stu's home videos, he called Dr . Kevorkian. And who is that? Well, in the real world, he was an advocate for euthanasia (assisted suicide).
43. When Tommy Does, Er.... Something In His Diaper
Tommy from Rugrats explains that he just needs something to poke in the hole. He then reaches inside his diaper and looks pretty pleased with himself. He's looking for his screwdriver, but... well... it kinda looks like something else.
44. When Lil Undressed In Front Of Tommy
When Lil got naked in front of Tommy, you best believe he had questions! While you're bound to be curious as a growing child, this one was a little strange with a female baby nekked in front of you. Yeah.
45. When Lil Found Playboy In Her Dad's Drawer
Because of course she did. Seriously, how many Playboy jokes are they going to get into one kid's channel? Lil was looking for a calculator in her dad's desk drawer, but that's the worst place to look if you don't want to find a stashed dirty mag.
46. When Grandpa Phil Did Drugs
On a TV program that has a serious number of old folks, chances are at least one of them is going to have done drugs back in their younger days. They were all teens once, after all. And turns out Grandpa Phil did drugs, which he tells Arnold.
47. When It Looked Liked Peter Was Enjoying Joy's A**
Wait, did I just see what I thought I saw? You might ask yourself this question if you watched this episode now as an adult. And yes, that's very much what it looks like. It's hard to even work out what it's actually supposed to be if not that...
48. Threesome, Anyone?
How to make a very young boy blush? Ask him to have a threesome, even though he doesn't even know what that means, most probably (or we should hope not at his age). Anyway, regardless the prospect of two girls at once made him blush.
49. Grandpa Phil's Story About The French Woman In The Barn
As mentioned, all these oldies have a past, after all, and apparently Grandpa Phil's included a French woman. In a barn. Who he hooked up with. While Phil seems ready to tell the whole, graphic story, he's (fortunately for Arnold) interrupted.
50. When Rocko's Doctor Told Him To Cough
As any adult knows, one part of a doctor's exam can be them clutching a guy's testicles and asking them to cough. Well, they managed to still get that joke into the show, but instead made it so the doctor was grabbed Rocko's eyeballs....
