Secrets No One Knew About The Jonas Brothers

They lied, the break up was rough

When anyone says something was mutual, it very rarely is, right? The same applies here. In 2013, all three of the boys ended up really hurt when they went their separate ways. Once Nick announced his plans to go solo, the Disney facade shattered and the layers of dysfunction were revealed, according to Joe.

And it was all Nick's fault, kinda.

Both Joe and Kevin felt utterly betrayed by Nick announcing his plans, but there were other issues at play too, according to Nick anyway. “I think a lot of people lost the appetite for what we were putting into the world. So, you know, we were putting up shows that weren’t selling. We were making music that I don’t think we were all super proud of, and it wasn’t connected.” So that was that.

The band hated their original name

Source: J-14

Before the iconic trio settled into "The Jonas Brothers", they were originally called "J3". They did

not
love it. Joe once told
Vulture
that they didn't want to be stuck with the name for their entire lives - fair enough. At least with the name they ended up with, they had room to evolve and weren't stuck as a teenage band forever.

"JONAS" was originally a secret agent show

When the lads moved to the Disney Channel, their original sitcom was geared to be "J.O.N.A.S.: Junior Operatives Networking As Spies.” However, following a writer's strike, the premise switched to be more in line with

Hannah Montana
etc. By the time the show ended, they'd completely fallen out of love with it. Joe for one was sick of having to "shave every day because they wanted me to pretend like I was 16 when I was 20.”

The forgotten brother

Source: factinate.com

How gutted would you be if your three older brothers went off to become famous and forgot all about you?  Well that's probably how "bonus-Jonas" Frankie feels. Too young to join the original line up, he did go on to become an actor, popping pop on

Jonas
from time to time, no surprises there.

Therapy was the way back

Source: Perez Hilton

Nick has been very honest about how the brothers dealt with it all: therapy. Being famous at such a young age can be perilous anyway, and throw in family dynamics and things are bound to get complicated. Nick shared that it was only thanks to therapy the boys were able to work out the anger and resentment caused by their break up and come back together as a family; we respect that.

Their relationship with the church has always been complicated

Source: Amazon Prime

With such "Christian" vibes surrounding them, it might be a surprise that the Jonas brothers actually left their Assemblies of God church when they were in their early teens (following a scandal involving some missing money.) After that, Joe says "the concept of church really upset [him] for a long time.” He told

Vulture
that "I believe in God, and that’s a personal relationship that I have, but I’m not religious in any way.”

Disney made them purer than they wanted to be

Source: YouTube

Oh boy, hands up if you remember those purity rings. You'd think that the choice to pledge to abstain from sex until marriage would be a deeply personal decision, right? The Jonas brothers claim however that it was Disney's idea and they felt obliged to follow through with it as to not disappoint their family and fans. Shockingly it didn't last forever...

Enter Ashley Greene...

The

Twilight
star came into Joe's life when he was 20 and it was quite a year by all accounts. He has since remarked that during their time together, purity rings were off-the-table. He admitted in a 2016 Reddit AMA that the stunning brunette made a man out of him, which she was not thrilled about (the way he revealed it, we're sure the actual event was fine.)

Aint no party like a Disney party...

Purity rings weren't all about sex of course. But abstaining from other party living didn't last long either. Joe fessed up to getting high when he was 17 with fellow Disney stars Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato. Before that, he'd been caught drinking (in another country where the legal age was lower) and "thought the world was going to collapse." After drinking himself basically unconscious at his 21st, his team were terrified someone would post a picture online.

Kevin has since left entertainment

Source: celebritynetworth.com

Maybe it's to be expected of the eldest, but Kevin definitely seemed to be the sensible one. No Disney dating scandals for him, rather he settled down pronto with Danielle Deleasa in 2009 and had 2 gorgeous girls. He is now the now the co-CEO, of

The Blue Market,
an influencer marketing company. He's also joined up with video sharing app
We Heart It,
helping boost their subscribers to an impressive 45 million.

Nick <3 Miley

Source: Capital FM

Disney fans will all recall Nick and Miley's thang; it was really quite beautiful. It wasn't until the brothers appeared on

Hannah Montana
that Nick reportedly told his brothers that he finally understood the love they had been singing about. His perspective on women was forever changed. Cute, right?

The same cannot be said for Selena

Source: PinkVilla

Sure, outward appearances can be deceptive, and that's definitely the case when it came to Selena Gomez. As steamy as their romance may have been suggested as being, Nick recalled to UK's Radio 1 that they once took a "romantic" stroll in Central Park, choosing to stand 25 feet apart to foil the paparazzi and to avoid "temptation." Saucy.

Kevin's fame impacts his wife's anxiety

Source: Harper's Bazaar

Danielle really dislikes the limelight and is quite open about using medication to help her manage with her anxiety. During their reality show

Married to Jonas,
she said “I don’t think I’m ever going to get used to being in the limelight with Kevin. People call me a gold digger and say I’m ugly. It’s hard.” She also remarked she'd had to work really hard to win her mother in law's approval, but having 2 beautiful children helped.

Kevin Jonas Sr. battled cancer

Source: futureofpersonalhealth.com

The Jonas boy's dad suffered from colon cancer beginning at 2017, but is thankfully now in remission. Nick recalls the family coming together at the time: "I had a lot of things on my schedule, but I said, 'I'm going to be here with you and walk through this with you and the family'... to be able to be there with him, be a unit as a family, is something I think, we should be really proud of." Family over fame, always.

The Joe, Taylor and Belle incident

Source: nickiswift.com

What's your record for shortest time between relationships? We're willing to bet it's longer than 30 seconds. In a real classy move, Joe once dumped pop legend Taylor Swift over the phone and began dating Camilla Belle less than a minute later. Of course both sides remember it differently and Joe was more inclined to pin the blame at Taylor's door saying “phone calls can only last as long as the person on the other end of the line is willing to talk.” Ouch.

The lads hated their show

Source: YouTube

Sure we've mentioned this before but it's worth making totally clear. Admittedly, most Disney shows are pretty dire if you're not 11 years old (maybe not even then...) However, even though the brothers may not agree on everything, they've all been pretty outspoken regarding how the show stunted their evolution as artists, making them seem prudish and naive (let's face it, they've since managed to shake that image pretty successfully.)

Punk rocker Joe

Source: BuzzFeed

Far flung from his squeaky clean Disney image, Joe recently revealed to

Vulture
that he really wanted the band to go a different way. He loved going to punk-rock shows in New Jersey and even created some demos. However, even when he finally gained creative autonomy, he still stuck with pop. Some things are never meant to be.

Hush hush beginnings

Source: distractify.com

It can't have helped the boy's relationship with their church when they were obliged to keep their first ever record deal a secret so their dad's job as a pastor wouldn't be put in jeopardy. As they weren't making "Christian" music (and were rather singing about girls), the risk to Kevin Sr.'s roll was felt to be too great. Nick once commented "I realized our dream that we were chasing freaked a lot of people out in the church.”

Kevin Sr. resigns

Source: lovePROPERTY

Even after all their efforts to keep their record deal a secret, Kevin Sr was forced to give up his much loved job. Without his income, the family really struggled financially for a while, especially when the band was dropped by Columbia. Pretty sure they're doing ok now though...

More girl drama

Source: People

Despite their roles as love interests in

Camp Rock,
Joe really disliked his time dating Demi Lovato. It may have only been a month, but it was, by his account, a pretty cringe month. He really disliked her lifestyle, but it fit with his brand so he stuck with it... for a whole 4 weeks.

Kevin was bullied

Source: mycast.io

Plenty of us have uncomfortable Elementary School memories, but for Kevin in particular, it was a brutal time. Kids would call him bigoted, hurtful names, making every day there a struggle. This feeling of isolation made being left out of certain

Jonas Brothers
gigs even more painful.

Nick's diabetes

Source: NBC News

Nick had a bit of a rep fro being the most difficult brother to work with, but this wasn't due to some child-star, bigheadedness. He decided to keep his daily struggle with diabetes, which often made him moody and awkward, a secret from their record label, earning him an unfair rep as a bit of a diva.

Nick and Joe hated
 Married To Jonas

Source: Amazon UK

As we mentioned earlier, in 2012/13, Kevin and his wife Danielle stared in their own reality TV show. The other brothers really hated it, especially the feeling that they needed to make appearances on it to make their brother happy. With that, along with Danielle's anxiety, it really doesn't seem like it was worth it.

Joe and his fan girls

Source: Vulture

Before he married Sophie Tuner (and in spite of that purity ring nonsense), Joe took full advantage of teenage fame. Even before Ashley and that fateful night, he fessed up to going on countless, secret dates with fans, who probably just saw his purity ring more as a challenge than a deterrent.

Six years apart

Source: Rolling Stone

We mentioned before that the brothers found it hard to reconcile after their split. In fact, the separation lasted 6 long years between 2013 and 2018. Whist in Sydney, Australia, the lads met up and started playing a truth telling game which got them reminiscing and processing their stuff together. Cute.

FIFA corruption (random, right)

Source: The Guardian

In 2017, FIFA were under investigation for bribery and corruption and a Paraguayan official named Juan Angel Napout was accused of money laundering, racketeering and wire fraud. Randomly, prosecutors needed to prove he attended a Paul McCartney concert in Buenos Aires in 2010 (which his lawyers claimed never happened). As the Jonas Brothers had played there two days before and had been invited to meet Sir Paul, they could testify the gig was real. So weird.

Kevin on the sidelines

Source: justjaredjr.com

Being less hunky than your brothers must be a bit of a wound, but when they chose to perform without you, claiming your'e holding them back, it's gotta sting. Speaking to

Bustle
, Kevin revelled he was particularly miffed when Nick and Joe performed at the B96 Pepsi Jingle Bash in 2013 without him. Rude ey.

Nick's shoe obsession

Source: GQ

When asked what they were most jealous of, Joe and Kevin revealed that Nick has a substantial collection of very nice footwear. Even more so than his fashionista wife, Priyanka Chopra Jones, which is saying something! She can literally wear anything and look good, but at least we know who wears the shoes in that relationship.

Pop icon or coffee legend...

Source: Daily Mail

It's always good to have a back up plan, but Kevin's is perhaps a bit lower down the fame scale than you'd expect. When asked what he'd be doing if the band hadn't taken off, his response was "probably working at Starbucks." Always good to have high expectations of yourself, ey Kev?
