People Share Their Weirdest ‘Icks’

By Lauren Mccluskey 1 year ago

1. Chasing a ping pong ball

Now, out of pretty much everything, a ping pong ball HAS to be the most undignified object to chase after.  And no wonder it's an 'ick' for lots of people.  They're tiny, they're round, and they bounce... So it's pretty humiliating to try to catch a runaway ping pong ball, especially with an audience!

2. Having an Instagram account for their pet

One thing that does give people an 'icky' feeling is when someone has a separate Instagram account for their pets.  Since when do dogs and cats need an online presence?  It's utterly ridiculous, and we think you'll find that people just aren't interested in taking the time to engage with your pooch or feline friend online.  Just stop it.

3. Double texting

You know what
double texting
is, right?  It's when someone sends you a message, you don't reply in a specified amount of time, so they text again - even if you had the intention to get back to them in your own time... If that doesn't scream desperation, we don't know what does!

4. Referring to self in the third person

We've all known someone who does this.  And when people speak about themselves as if they were speaking about someone else, it's just a huge turn-off for lots of people out there!  They'll say
'John is so hungry, he wants some cereal'
and, in all honesty, it makes people heave...  And what about when they put
'the'
before they say people's names?  Just no...

5. Swimming with goggles

This is a strange one, but people are genuinely 'icked' out when they either see people swimming in goggles or when they consider wearing goggles themselves!  And despite their many uses, not to mention seeing underwater or protecting your eyes, many people just can't get past the cringe!

6. Running for a bus

We've all done it, even if you don't want to admit it!  But running for a bus is way up there when it comes to the 'ick'.  Especially when there's a bus full of people watching you run with so much determination and sureness that you'll make it.  And then the doors shut, and it slowly drives away whilst you pretend you were out for a morning jog...

7. Ankles

Body parts are quite common when it comes to peoples' 'ick' lists.  And ankles certainly rank pretty high... We're not sure why but it could be something to do with the sticky-out bones and the visible tendons and veins on many people's ankles.  Or it could be when they imagine injuring them... Ouch!

8. Crude jokes

Everyone's sense of humor differs and it's important to accept that yours might vary from someone else's, and you're not always going to get people to laugh at you.  But there's one thing for certain: it's extremely common for people to
despise
crude jokes, to the point that they're hugely offended by them!

9. Putting on a baby voice

Yuck!  Now, this is an 'ick' that we can definitely get onboard with!  When grown adults put on a baby voice, what on earth are they hoping to achieve?  The jury's out on that one, but we all know what reaction they'll get... And it's NOT going to be an '
awwwwww'...

10. Clapping when the plane lands

Why do people even clap when their plane lands?  Is it because they're thanking the pilot and airline staff?  Or is it because they're excited about arriving at their destination?  OR could it be that they're just immensely relieved that they've made it in one piece and the plane didn't crash?  Who knows but it's intensely irritating!

11. Running to pick up candy from a pinata

Pinatas are so exciting, and it's cute when children all run in to claim their prizes... But when a grown adult runs full throttle into the middle, probably taking out a few kids in the process, to gather as much candy as they can, you might pretend you've never seen them in your life!

12. Belly buttons

Belly buttons can cause a strong irrational fear.  In fact, this fear is actually classed as a phobia and it has its own name:
Omphalophobia.
And although it can be treated, this phobia can be pretty horrifying for people when they consider touching or even looking at their own or someone else's naval!

13. Running with a backpack on

Now there's running for the bus... And then there's something even worse: running for the bus with a backpack on.  There's just no elegant way to do it, is there?  It feels AND looks extremely awkward and is not something people want to do or be seen doing.  Especially out in public!

14. Wearing sunglasses indoors

Come one now - the clue's in the name!  SUNglasses!  They're for protecting your eyes from the sun and only the sun.  And they are certainly not for looking cool indoors.  How can you even see through them?  This understandably gives people a major 'ick'!

15. Being obsessed with star signs

One thing that can give people an 'icky' feeling is when someone seems
obsessed
with astrology.  The thing is, though, star signs tend to be appealing to people because it can feel like they can harness a sense of control over the things that are happening in their life.  Each to their own!

16. Having a 'Tool Nail'

'tool nail'
is a new term to us but apparently, they can be rather useful.  They're basically long thumbnails that you can use to do certain things like what a screwdriver can do...  And this really creeps lots of people out... Imagine how incredibly filthy it would get!

17. Breathing loudly

We all NEED to breathe to live, right?  But there are 'icks' when it comes to
how
people breathe.  You see, as ridiculous as it possibly sounds, people breathing loudly either through their nostrils or through their mouth is really really irritating to some.

18. Wearing socks to bed

Anything to do with the feet has the potential to make
'the ick list'
but actually wearing socks in bed takes the cake!  It's a strange one, but some people are genuinely grossed out by this.  The thing is, though, sleep experts have been known to recommend you wear socks for bed to help you to fall asleep faster, so we'll let you decide on this one!

19. Wearing white jeans

White jeans are risky at the best of times, but it's not stained white jeans that give people the 'ick', it's just wearing them altogether!  And even if you wanted to wear them, there are rules that only give you a tiny window of time!  Like, say, not wearing them after Labor Day or after September!  Are they really worth the effort?

20. Having a YouTube channel

No matter how successful someone's online content gets, some people still can't get past the fact that someone owns their own YouTube channel.  And what gripes many adults could probably be the hours and hours they are forced by their kids to watch it or the fact that they might label themselves as an
influencer.

21. Eating breakfast cereal from a mug

Mugs are for hot drinks, and HOT DRINKS ONLY.  Not for soup and NOT for breakfast cereal.  And the only reason people do it is probably that they're too lazy to wash an actual bowl!  To be honest, it makes us think about drinking the cereal and that's just gross!

22. Gloves

This is a weird one.  Some types of gloves keep your hands warm, some protect your hands and the antibacterial type even protects others.  So what we're saying is that they're useful.  And even though they make some Reddit users feel uneasy, they can't actually tell anyone why!

23. Seeing other people brush their teeth

One thing that does gross many people out is seeing other people, even if they're on the television brush their teeth.  It's something to do with the foam that they have to spit out into the sink.  And they ways other people brush their teeth always feel wrong too.

24. Vest

Another 'icky' fashion faux pas is the vest.  They're usually worn as part of a formal suit, but people have been found to wear them casually with jeans.  And this makes the wrong kind of statement.  Many questions what the purpose and function of a vest actually are... come to think of it, why do they exist?

25. Running up the stairs on all fours

When you just can't get up the stairs quickly enough just using your legs, you might adopt your hands and crawl quickly on all fours to the top.  One Reddit user says their partner does this all the time and it's so irritating and way too childish for their liking!

26. Owning a pencil case

For the super organized, a pencil case is a wonderful tool for keeping all of your stationery in order.  But in owning a pencil case, it seems you're offending a few people online.  Who knows though, maybe they're just jealous of how well together your life seems.

27. Smiling with food in teeth

Now, this is something no one can really help when they're eating in public.  But, of course, when you smile with a bit of food stuck in your teeth, it seems to make people cringe.  But, the thing is, they would rather suffer in silence than actually tell you of your misfortune.

28. Bad grammar

Many people have claimed that they are the gatekeepers of grammar and they will protect it at all costs, including criticizing you if you speak with non-standard (or, as they say, bad) grammar!  But their behavior actually gives YOU a much bigger 'ick'!

29. Dirty fingernails

Dirty fingernails are certainly enough to make some people recoil in horror when you reach out to shake their hand.  And they're probably not completely in the wrong to do this either!  This is because a person's fingernails are said to be more than TWICE as dirty as their hands and this dirt can be transferred to the mouth and may cause nasty infections!

30. Texting 'hehe'

There has been a lot of discussion online about people texting '
hehe'
to someone, and it's safe to say that it definitely has an
'I'm a creep'
vibe.  Users of Reddit have expressed an uncomfortable feeling they get when they receive a text like this as if the fully-grown sender is trying to be
cute
or
mischievous.
