Signs You’re Being Stalked

1. The same person appears in places you go frequently

You might find that you are constantly seeing the same person everywhere you go.  It might be when you're working out at the gym, doing your weekly shopping, or walking your dog in the park.  No matter where you go, they're always there, and it's beginning to feel like more than a coincidence.

2. They show up at your workplace unannounced

If you work in a public-facing environment, you might find that they're always frequenting your workplace.  Or you even might feel like they're spending a lot of time lurking just outside where you work and you're finding yourself bumping into them outside an unusual amount.

3. You keep getting unwanted calls, messages, or emails

You might be more conscious about the number of times they call, message, or email you on a day-to-day basis.  It could be an unusually excessive amount and it's making you feel uncomfortable.  They might even take steps to do this anonymously too so you don't actually know it's them.

4. They like and comment on everything

It's pretty clear that they're keeping an eye on your social media and whenever you post an update, a reel, or a story, they on it straight away.  And they engage with everything your post to your social media, reacting to it, commenting on it and they're always the first to do this.

5. Friends and family members are subjected to questions about you

Perhaps they don't want to make it obvious that they've developed, or are developing a fixation on you so they might start to interact with your friends and family members more.  They might ask them questions about you to find out more about who you are and what you're doing.

6. You receive unwanted gifts or cards

You might be absolutely bombarded with a tidal wave of unwanted gifts, cards, or letters.  And this might consist of an elaborate bunch of flowers sent to your workplace, parcels sent to your house, or even an excessive amount of letters through the post...

7. They have been in your home or your car without your permission

Another concerning and incredibly intrusive sign is that you might have caught them in your house or your car without you giving them permission to be there.  Or, if you didn't catch them in the act, you might have found evidence that someone has been in your personal space.

8. You feel like you're being watched or followed

You also might constantly feel like you are being watched or followed, even if you are at home.  You might be shopping, or walking home, but you're feeling uneasy.  And this feeling might feel particularly worse and much stronger when you are on your own.

9. They might appear quite possessive of you

If it's someone you know, you might find that they already are, or they're growing quite possessive of you.  You constantly feel like you have to justify how you're choosing to spend your time and who you're choosing to spend it with.  And those close to you have probably noticed this too.

10. You feel like you're being controlled

Whether you personally know your potential stalker or not, you feel like your life and your decisions are being controlled by them.  This is because their actions are preventing you from going to places you used to go to because they might be there, or you might not want to spend time alone because you're afraid.

11. You might be receiving unwanted sexual or explicit images or messages

On top of the bombardment of calls, messages, and emails, you might also be receiving unwanted indecent images or messages from a known person, or someone anonymous.  This is often called 'sexting' and if it's unwanted, or makes you feel uncomfortable, this is sexual harassment and you should report it immediately.

12. They have made threats to you

You should seek support if you feel like you have a stalker, but it is really important that you report it as soon as they begin to make threats.  They might threaten to harm you, others, or even themselves if you reject them and these can be from a known individual or anonymous.

13. You feel harassed

By definition,
harassment
covers a wide range of behaviors that intend to demean, embarrass, or humiliate a person.  But it is also true that if you feel like someone is harassing you, they might be doing it to scare and intimidate you and make you feel threatened.

14. They may have been recently rejected by you

It is possible that the person stalking you has recently been rejected as a partner or a friend by you.  And you are well within your rights to choose who to be a partner or friend to.  It's important to understand that you do not deserve to feel threatened and intimidated by their stalking behaviors and harassment.

15. Or you have recently broken up with them

There is also the possibility that you've recently broken up with a partner, and they're the ones harassing you.  Again, you must remember that whatever your reasons might have been for ending the relationship, you don't deserve to be stalked by anyone.

16. They threaten to harm themselves. you or others if you leave or reject them

Now, we've touched upon this, but it's important to point out that if they threaten harm to you, themselves, or others if you leave or reject them, this is a way that they are hoping to control you, including your actions and your decisions and these threats should be reported.

17. They have a history of stalking others

It's likely that this isn't the first time they have ever stalked someone.  They've probably done it before to one or multiple people.  They might have been caught and charged for their offenses, or it might be something you've heard from another victim or friend.

18. They're tracking you on social media

Your social media is the perfect place to gather information about you and you might either find they're always the first to engage with your posts, or they might have even created an anonymous account to monitor you.  They might even
troll
you from this account.

19. You feel like you're being slowly isolated from your friends and family

You might be afraid to make plans and leave the house, so you cancel plans or don't even make them.  So you are slowly but surely becoming more and more isolated away from your friends and your family.  They might even try to turn those close to you against you so they are all you have got.

20. You feel threatened around the person

You might even feel threatened by the person you suspect is stalking or harassing you.  Having these worries alone will make you feel particularly uncomfortable around them.  They might have made threats before, or their behavior has left you feeling frightened.

21. You may have had your home vandalized

Another scare tactic they might use is to vandalize your home.  They could have done this while you were out and then cunningly offer you a shoulder of support when you were feeling scared and vulnerable.  Or they could have lost their temper if you had rejected them.

22. Your property might have been damaged

Again, like vandalizing your house, they could even damage your property to make you feel fearful and lean on them for support.  They might have even trashed your tablet, phone, or laptop to cut you off from contacting anyone else.  It could even be done as a threat to you.

23. You've found surveillance hardware

This sounds extreme, but the truth is, this is another terrifying sign that someone is stalking you.  Some stalkers may go to great lengths to monitor your every movement so they might invest in and install surveillance hardware at your home, in your car, or even in your workplace.

24. They may have a particular fixation with you

If you feel like you have a stalker, they might show signs of having a particular fixation with you.  They might be constantly checking your social media, following you wherever you go, talking nonstop about you to your friends and family, and some stalkers have been known to hack into personal emails.

25. They try to influence and control your decisions

They might try to influence and control your decisions in many different ways.  If they are known to you, they might show obvious disapproval of your actions to attempt to control what you do.  But if they're anonymous to you, they might do certain things to scare you into not going out.

26. You're afraid to visit the places you enjoy going to

You see them everywhere you go and their behavior has frightened you enough for you to avoid all of the places that you used to love visiting so much.  It seems like they just know your every move and the last thing you want to do is give them another opportunity to
'bump'
into you.

27. They could be using disguises to follow you

They might be following you on foot, stalking you online, or even a mixture of both.  But if they're on foot, they probably don't want you to notice them.  So one thing they might do is use disguises to avoid being detected.  And it might just be something as simple as a baseball cap.

28. You notice them stalking your friends, family, and even acquaintances

Your friends and family might be experiencing similar harassment.  As your stalker continues to attempt to get closer to you, they attempt to get closer to your loved ones.  This, again, is a way to control you and make you feel threatened and isolated.

29. You don't want to be alone

Being alone is not what you want right now, and even though you might be feeling more and more isolated, the thought of being on your own is quite terrifying because when you are alone, you feel the most vulnerable.  You shouldn't ever feel like this but it's important that you do not go through this alone and you speak to someone.

30. You're scared to seek support but this is exactly what you must do

You might have read this because you have found yourself experiencing what you believe might be stalking.  If you're experiencing any of these signs, or any other signs you believe are stalking, it is so important that you take steps to reach out to law enforcement or a victim advocacy organization to seek support.
