The Most Popular Candy Bar In Each State

1. Alabama

Hershey's is an American staple, so it seems fitting that it's first on our list. The people of Alabama prefer Hershey's... specifically Hershey's Mini Bars to any other candy bar. The bags with the mix of Mr. Good, Krackle and Milk Chocolate are the best! Do you have a favorite of the three?

2. Alaska

Twix is a personal favorite of mine. I think the mix of the chocolate, caramel and cookie crunch is a combination that can't be beat! Apparently Alaska agrees with this sentiment as it's the top candy bar in their state. Seems like original Twix is the way to go, but a lot of people do like the variation flavors.

3. Arizona

Gonna be real with you... You're gonna see this candy bar a LOT on this list. Snickers is considered the top candy bar in several states, so much so that it's the top candy bar in the entire United States. Is it the salty and sweet goodness combined with the nougat and caramel? Hard to say, but yes.

4. Arkansas

If you love peanut butter, then this famous candy bar is probably at the top of your list. The same goes for everyone in Arkansas. It's crispy and crunchy and has a great peanut butter flavor. If you remember the Bart Simpson ads, then you know, "Don't lay a finger on my Butterfinger!"

5. California

Amp it up a little further if peanut butter is your jam, and grab a Reese's. Californians seem to love this combination of sweet and salty chocolate and peanut butter. Did you know that nearly 980,000 POUNDS of Reese's Cups are sold to Californians every year?!

6. Colorado

Colorado is also a Twix state. There's a theory that there's a difference between the right and left Twix. The story goes that the left Twix contains more cookie than caramel, and the right has more caramel than cookie. So depending on your preferences and if you're sharing, you can fight for the side you want!

7. Connecticut

Milky Way is the top pick for our friends in Connecticut and a few other states on the list. Did you know that in other countries, the candy bar called a Milky Way is more similar to our 3 Musketeers bar? In the US, the Milky Way has a nougat center with caramel, all dipped in creamy milk chocolate. Yum!

8. Delaware

Americans love a good Kit Kat. As soon as you hear the name, you probably think of the jingle... Give me a break! In the US, we only have a couple variations, but in Japan, there are over 200 different flavors of Kit Kat bars. There's a giant Kit Kat in Australia that also has a layer of caramel, and it's life changing!

9. Florida

And we're back to the delightful Snickers bar. The state of Florida knows what's up choosing this as their top bar. Did you know that the very first Snickers bar was manufactured in 1930. They say that the chocolate bar is named after a horse, and the first one was sold for five cents!

10. Georgia

Seriously, you would think that Snickers bars are the only ones that Americans eat with how many states this candy tops. It's been the American go-to for 90 years, with the first one coming out of Chicago! My mouth is watering just thinking about the salty and sweet goodness. Hungry? Why wait?

11. Hawaii

We're back to the classic here in Hawaii with the Hershey's Mini Bars. It feels quite fitting, because when you think of summer and sunsets, it's easy to think of s'mores around the fire with your friends. Are you surprised that this is the top candy bar in Hawaii? I kind of expected something more exotic!

12. Idaho

Snickers, Snickers EVERYWHERE! We love this candy bar all across the US. There are variations of Snickers, but the classic combination seems to be everyone's favorite. Have you ever tried a frozen Snickers bar though? Sure, the Snickers ice cream is good, but it doesn't hit quite as hard as a frozen classic bar!

13. Illinois

Illinois must also like taking snack breaks. Here we see the Kit Kat topping the list once again. If you could invent your own flavor of Kit Kat, what would it be? People think that if you DON'T break off each piece to eat it and just bite into the whole thing, then you are wild and unpredictable. Some people take apart the wafer and the chocolate, but that seems like too much!

14. Indiana

Snickers bars are here again. You're going to see it SEVERAL more times. So here's a fun fact. In the UK, a Snickers bar is called a Marathon. Honestly, that seems fairly fitting to go with the US motto of being hungry. Apparently in the UK, if you eat enough Snickers, you can run a Marathon!

15. Iowa

Do you prefer classic Reese's, the Big Cup or the Pieces? There's actually an entire day devoted to the candy bar. May 18 is officially I Love Reese's day in the US. I bet the parties in Iowa are out of control to help them celebrate their favorite candy!

16. Kansas

Speaking of Reese's, Kansas also considers it their top candy bar. If you're looking to spice things up a bit, next time you're making a s'more, swap out that Hershey bar for a Reese's cup. There's something so delightful about the peanut butter and chocolate combining with the gooey marshmallow and crunchy graham cracker.

17. Kentucky

When you go trick-or-treating, you know that the Reese's mini cups are the ultimate goal. At least that's the case in Kentucky. Yet another state where Reese's is the top of the list. The first Reese's entered the scene in 1928, and it comes from the Hershey manufacturer. Thank you to the inventor of this delicious chocolate bar!

18. Louisiana

Okay, I'll be real. I'm running out of things to say about this candy bar. If you haven't tried a Reese's you're really missing out, and you should probably go buy one right now! You can actually order directly from the Hershey's factory for the ULTIMATE freshness. Check out their website to get the chocolatey goodness right to your doorstep.

19. Maine

Kit Kats are Maine's main choice. See what I did there? This candy bar actually originated in the United Kingdom and was known as Rowntree's Chocolate Crisp when it debuted in 1937. The Kit Kat is now produced by Hershey's here in the United States since 1970. Cheers to England for bringing us this yummy candy bar!

20. Maryland

Reese's was actually invented by a former Hershey Factor employee named Harry Burnett Reese (makes sense). After he left the Hershey company, he tried a few times to get a candy company off the ground. He had a few flops, but then the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup was born. We're all glad he persevered!

21. Massachusetts

Peanut butter and chocolate might be one of the most beloved combinations in the United States. Peeking at this list makes it pretty clear that there's something about the combination that we just can't get enough of. Especially when it's also crispy and flaky and delicious!

22. Michigan

Here's a fun fact! There are about sixteen peanuts in every single Snickers bar. Of course, that's not the case for the Fun Size Snickers which hit the scene in 1968. If you love Snickers, the Fun Size ones are great to keep on hand, perhaps in your desk drawer, and of course, to pass out as Halloween treats.

23. Minnesota

Snickers are so beloved and such a staple of America that the brand was actually an official sponsor of the LA Olympic Games back in 1984. The Snickers ice cream would be introduced just a few short years later in 1989. Do you have a favorite Snickers variation that you love?

24. Mississippi

Wow, this makes so much more sense. The very first 3 Musketeers bar was a package of three mini candy bars that were Neapolitan flavored - one chocolate, one vanilla and one strawberry. Now you'll find a chocolatey nougat center covered in chocolate.

25. Missouri

Missouri loves Milky Ways more than any other chocolate bar on the market. Outside of the US, if you're looking for a Milky Way, ask for a Mars Bar! The dark chocolate Milky Way with marshmallow cream is also pretty delicious if you're looking for a fun variation on a classic!

26. Montana

Back in 2010, the Snickers campaign "You're Not You When You're Hungry" was created. The campaign won a lot of awards! Then, in 2013, Snickers passed $1 billion in sales across the United States. Literally no one is surprised that it's at the top of yet another state with Montana.

27. Nebraska

Whether you prefer more cookie or more caramel, Twix is everyone's favorite in Nebraska. Compared to some of these other candy bars on the list, it's been around for a short time, making its first appearance in 1967 in the UK. It came to America 13 years later after gaining popularity in the United Kingdom.

28. Nevada

Kit Kat was renamed to Kit Kat (from Rowntree's Chocolate Crisp) back in 1937. The most popular flavors are original, dark chocolate, white cream, and the mint & dark chocolate duo. Did you know they've used the "Give Me A Break" jingle since 1988? Talk about campaign staying power!

29. New Hampshire

While we're here talking about Snickers again, can we talk about Snickers Almond? Some people swear by this flavor over the original, but by and large, the original is the one people flock to. The almond flavor is good, and I wouldn't say no if someone offered, but you just can't beat the peanut taste.

30. New Jersey

New Jersey loves Kit Kats too, so let's break down what makes up these delicious bars. It's a 3-layer wafer that's separated and coated with chocolate. Each Kit Kat has four breakable pieces, which are officially called fingers. Sadly, Kit Kats are not gluten free, so eat at your own risk!

31. New Mexico

Milky Ways are top pick for the state of New Mexico. The first Milky Way came out in 1924. Did you know that Milky Ways were actually not named after the galaxy of the same name. The flavor of the candy bar is meant to capture that of a malted milkshake, hence the name Milky Way.

32. New York

With the amount of new candy and desserts coming out, it's incredible that here we are talking about Snickers once again! Snickers continues to put out different types of products for us to try. As recently as 2021, Snickers introduced the Snickers Brownie, much to the delight of fans everywhere.

33. North Carolina

North Carolina is in love with the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup! Here's a fun fact. When they first came out, this candy bar was known as a penny cup. This was because that's how much they were selling for! Can you imagine how many Reese's Cups you could have for one penny?

34. North Dakota

In case you were wondering, Snickers manufacturers produce fifteen million Snickers candy bars A DAY to keep up with the demand of all of these states filled with Snickers lovers. North Dakota adds to this daily demand by making Snickers the top of the list for their state as well!

35. Ohio

Snickers actually set a world record! Yes, that's right. This candy bar is in the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest chocolate nut bar in the world! The bar was so large that it equaled 41,000 individual bars and took over 1,200 pounds of nougat, caramel and peanuts combined with 3,500 pounds of chocolate!

36. Oklahoma

There's no wrong way to eat a Snickers! Milky Way and Snickers were the first candy bars to introduce "Fun Size." Of course, we all prefer the full-sized treat if we're going to indulge, but the fun sized bars are perfect for that midday pick me up! The state of Oklahoma would definitely agree.

37. Oregon

I'm sure someone in Oregon has tried this. Next time you're making chocolate chip cookies, ditch the semi-sweet chips and try chopping up your favorite chocolate bar instead. A Reese's cookie does sound pretty delicious. Brb, going to head to my kitchen to test it out!

38. Pennsylvania

Given that Pennsylvania is the home to the Hershey Chocolate Factory (Hershey, PA!), it makes sense that the classic Hershey bar tops the list in this state. Whether you break it into pieces or just take a big old bite, there's no wrong way! You can order a five pound Hershey bar on their website!

39. Rhode Island

For such a small state, Rhode Island really loves Twix. As we all know, Americans love this classic combo, but we also know that Americans love the peanut butter chocolate combo. So have you tried the Twix peanut butter bars? Seems like the best of both worlds, really!

40. South Carolina

Butterfingers are South Carolina's candy bar pick. The guy who invented the Butterfinger also invented Baby Ruth candy bars. The name came from when baseball players dropped the ball and were called butter fingers. Apparently the inventor dude loves baseball. And we love Butterfingers!

41. South Dakota

Honestly, I can't even say anything else about Snickers at this point. Other than the fact that they're delicious. Fun fact, when the pandemic hit, my friends stocked up on the essentials like water, toilet paper, and canned goods... and also a massive box of Snickers from Costco, because even when life is chaos, you need some happiness!

42. Tennessee

I told you that you were going to see Snickers a lot on this list. Okay, here's a question for you. If you could NOT have a Snickers bar ever again, which candy bar would you choose? Also, examining this list again, between Snickers, Milky Ways and 3 Musketeers, I would personally like to thank the inventor of the nougat.

43. Texas

The people of Texas love their Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. In fact, the website candy story.com actually sold OVER 1 million pounds of Reese's candy bars to the residents of Texas alone. That doesn't even count the rest of the United States. Talk about a LOT of chocolate and peanut butter.

44. Utah

Back to Snickers again for Utah. It's honestly comical at this point. Like, should we be trying to change it up, or is this one of those types of things where they say "don't mess with a good thing"? I guess it's good to know what to stock up on if you're going on a road trip!

45. Vermont

We already discussed how Milky Ways were designed to taste like malted milkshakes. Do you think they were successful? Either way, there's no denying that this candy bar tops the list yet again for the people of Vermont. Guess it's time to get a Milky Way and a milkshake to compare!

46. Virginia

Okay, we're talking about Snickers two more times. Are you ready? Since these guys are so popular, try using them to make your dessert extra yummy. Toss some chopped up Snickers on your vanilla ice cream (or chocolate, whatever) for an extra salty and chocolatey treat!

47. Washington

Woo, okay, we made it through all the Snickers states. It's topped the list of so many states that I can't even keep track. As this is truly the official sponsor of AMERICA, it's important that we the people try every version possible, so whether it's original, frozen, ice cream, brownies, or more... dig in!

48. West Virginia

West Virginia loves Milky Ways, and these candy bars were actually the first-ever filled candy bar! Prior to these guys, it was solid chocolate, etc. Pretty cool to see the introduction of the nougat and caramel combination. To the person who came up with this idea, thank you very much.

49. Wisconsin

Crispy, crunchety, peanut-buttery candy bars top the list in Wisconsin. For a state that loves cheese, this golden yellow candy bar just makes sense honestly. Butterfingers stay relevant and recently improved their recipe in 2019, but many fans of the candy bar have said they prefer the original recipe.

50. Wyoming

Makes sense to end our list with this other candy bar we've talked about so much Wyoming is all about the Reese's. What's everyone's feelings on Reese's Pieces? These were my jam as a kid, especially if you put them in the fridge or freezer in the summer. There's so many types of candy bars we didn't even get to talk about, but these guys are the classics for a reason!
