Vine was a platform where you could make and post small videos - pretty much the precursor to TikTok. Vine took over for some years and it was one of the first short video platforms to start the trend. After years of popularity, it started to die out due to competitors and finished in 2016.

2. MySpace

If you were a part of the MySpace generation, you probably think back on it fondly. It really was a huge success for several years, around 2003 to 2009 especially. You even had the ability to embed your favorite music videos and it was thanks to MySpace that the likes of Nicki Minaj  was launched to success.

3. Musically

Musically was launched in 2014 and it pretty much replicated exactly what TikTok has done more successfully - but essentially it was a former TikTok and ByteDance ltd. bought it and merged the company. The app again allowed users to watch and create short video content, often music/dance based.

4. Friends Reunited

If you've heard of this you're probably from generation X, if you've not heard of it it's not totally surprising because it was kind of a flop. FriendsReunited had the aim to do exactly that, reunite friends. Yet, it launched in 2000 and it never truly took off. It attempted another relaunch in 2012 to no avail.

5. Bebo

Okay, who remembers Bebo? This one was for the millennials. Bebo was one of the first popular social media sites as it started up bang in the middle of the era when social media was becoming taking hold of the world. One of its unique features was the ability to design your own profile template. Nevertheless in 2013 this also joined the top of the social media apps no longer used.

6. Tumblr

Okay, Tumblr hit and it seemed like they'd really done something new here. It wasn't quite like other social medias that were out yet, ahead of its time some would say. Tumblr had its moment with its popularity amongst angsty teens, but is now a distant memory for most.

7. MSN messenger

Oh, the good old days of MSN when things were SO much simpler. It was a very basis messaging service where the best you could do was send what we now call a GIF, and back then was some kind of pixelated picture saying something along the lines of 'cool beans'. It's no wonder it couldn't keep up with the likes of today's socials.

8. Blackberry Messenger

There was a time a few years ago when it seemed like every man and his dog had a blackberry phone. If you didn't, you weren't part of the blackberry club and you couldn't use Blackberry messenger. But, this social media phased out as quickly as it had phased in and it's no longer used today.

9. Google Plus

11. Yik Yak

YikYak at one point seemed like it would really take off. If you happened to be on a college campus when YikYak was big, you'll know that it could be a lot of fun. It showed people in the area who could post a comment anonymously. It was usually full of jokes or witty comments or things going on around you. Yet again, it blew up in popularity yet after a couple of years the hype completely died out.

12. Google Wave

Google Wave was another attempt by search engine giant Google to establish a popular social media account. Again, it failed. In fact the initial hype lasted around 4 months and eventually it was discontinued altogether. Google Wave didn't have much about it that made it different to any other messaging service.

13. Habbo

The days of Habbo, you could create your character and you could chat to anyone and everyone. It was kind of like a game as well as a chat room. 14. Friendster

15. Vero

16. Yahoo! Messenger

Yahoo messenger was an instant messaging service, much like many other social media messaging apps. It began in 1998 and it managed to last until 2018 by varying features and consistent updates. 17. Google Buzz

And here is the third attempt from Google to start at all time favorite social media app. You guessed it. It didn't work. 18. SixDegrees

20. Ello

21. Ping

22. ConnectU

Connectu nearly became today's Facebook and is most likely what inspired the Facebook team. It was intended to connect school pals and peers together on a social media site. For some reason it failed, but Mark Zuckerberg took inspiration and managed to create his own version.

23. Vitalskate

Vitalskate was intended to be the social media platform for skating culture. And it was for some time. But again, the success was very short-lived. It allowed you to connect and share photos etc. But, it also ended up on the heap of unsuccessful social media.

24. Orkut

Orkut was yet another attempt by Google at a social media site, yet this time keeping their name out of it. The intention really was to solely reconnect people and help people connect with friends. But, you couldn't 'accept' a friend, and so the only way to keep someone you didn't want from connecting with you was to put them on 'ignore'.

25. Xanga

Xanga came about back in 1999 and it was a place to share things with friends such as posts, media reviews, music ,or even the books you were reading. It was going quite well until MySpace came along and basically overtook it until Xanga was no more.

26. Pownce

Pownce emerged in 2007 as a micro-blogging site. Yet, it didn't have enough differences to distinguish itself from the more popular and powerful Twitter. Despite a brief enthusiasm, within 18 months the whole thing was said and done and Pownce was finished.

29. Eons

Eons attempted to specialize in a category suited to their target audience. And their target audience was baby boomers. Yet attempting to reach the older generation is a more difficult feat, and they still preferred to go for the already bigger and established options out there.

30. Surfbook

Surfbook...which sounds very much like Facebook but came before, wasn't ever very well known. In fact, you may not have even heard of it. However, they did set a precedent for social media to come and they did actually introduce the very first ever 'like' button.
