Signs He Is Hiding Something From His Past

1. His phone is always facing downwards

You know when his phone is always facing down that there's something he doesn't want you or anybody else to see. It doesn't just happen accidentally each and every time that he puts it down on the table face down, he's turning it so that if anything flashes up you won't see it!

2. His story doesn't seem to add up

You've probably asked him about certain things over and over, but maybe his story isn't consistent. If it's not adding up then you have to ask yourself why? The truth is what really happened, and his version of events seems to change slightly every time he talks about it!

3. They evade certain topics when you bring them up

Certain topics are just off-limits. He gets super uncomfortable when you bring up the dreaded subjects and he'll evade them every time. He clearly doesn't want to talk about them which could mean that there is something about that topic that he's hiding and doesn't want you to find out.

4. There's a section of his past where you seem to know nothing about it

It's normal to know all about or at least have a general picture about his past. And maybe you know most of it, but there's a certain section that remains an unknown area in your mind. He never discusses it and he brushes over it if you or anybody else try and talk about it.'

5. There are certain people he gets uncomfortable talking about

Another clear sign that he's hiding something from his past is if there are certain people he doesn't want to talk about and gets really uncomfortable talking about. We all have pasts, and not all of them can be good. But just the mention of certain names is enough to get his backup.

6. He does not show you many past photos

You may know of certain people who he's briefly mentioned from his past but you can't put a face to a name because he's never shown you. It's not a case of the topic has never come up, he actually doesn't want you to see and he may even have deleted them to make sure you don't!

7. He acts shady with his personal documents

Personal documents are of course private by nature, yet he's particularly shady about where he keeps them and ensuring that you never touch them or see them. He'll never leave them lying around and you may not know where he keeps them or he may even lock a certain place so that you never see them!

8. He avoids certain places or places where he'll see certain people

In a home town you always know that in certain places you're more likely to see certain people that you know. He may make an active effort to prevent you and the two of you together from going here because he knows there will people that will associate him with his past!

9. He takes his phone EVERYWHERE

Sadly, phones now give people a chance to be living a different kind of online life where they may be hiding secrets. A person's phone reveals a lot about them. But if he's taking it everywhere with him it might be because he's trying to hide something and doesn't want anybody else stumbling across it.

10. You've heard people call him different names which he claims are 'nicknames'

You know him as 'Brent', yet a lot of people call him 'Colter' and you've also heard him be called 'Jack'. Or,  you may hear everyone call him by nicknames and nobody actually calls him by his real name. If you think this is suspicious, it's because it is. It may be that he doesn't want to be associated with the name or names that tie him to his past.

11. He takes a LOT of calls and says 'they're just a work thing'

'Oh, it was just a work thing', and 'what call? Oh, that was just my boss', 'I wasn't whispering, it's the time difference it's late where he is!'. You've heard these excuses one too many times when it comes to these secretive phone calls and it doesn't seem to ring true with you anymore. It sounds like he has a past secret he doesn't want to re-emerge.

12. His appearance changed a lot

If you've spotted past photos and he looks entirely different (and not just because he hit puberty) he may have done it purposefully so that he won't be recognized or to signify a new start. He may have changed his hair color, and his style, and grew a beard that he never used to have!

13. They never truly drop their guard

Think about when you're holding in a secret or there's a surprise party you're not allowed to mention. You can never FULLY relax because you're always on guard in case you slip up. So, if he is hiding something this is how he'll be acting, constantly slightly on edge.

14. When he does mention the past, the story seems to change

You've heard one version of events, you've heard another entirely different story, and the next time you ask it's probably changed again. Well, which is it? Or is it none of them? Is the real version hidden as a part of his past that he never wants anyone to discover?

15. He gets very defensive if you question whether he is hiding something

Of course, the most rational and logical thing to do when we suspect he is hiding something from his past is to be open and just ask him outright 'Hey, it seems like there may be something you're hiding from me?'. If he is, he'll act very defensively and may even get angry.

16. They're overly concerned about how people view them and their reputation

He may be completely caught up in how people perceive them. And this can be a sign of insecurity or even vanity but it can also be because he's hiding something and doesn't want his façade to sleep and for people to realize he's hiding something. He's probably quite obsessed with maintaining his reputation.

Perhaps they have two phones, or they change their number frequently and have a very private or secretive online presence. When you see their phone log you may also notice that there are lots of No Caller ID calls which can also point towards the fact he's hiding something from his past.

18. They are VERY protective about their things

When you touch his things he may have an unproportionate response of anger or stress. If he is hiding his past he'll probably have certain places for his things or private places which you are not allowed to touch. This is because there may be clues there that he's worried you'll find.

19. They refuse to get introduce you to people from their past

It's strange because there are people from his past who you just haven't been introduced to. And, whenever you ask about them or ask about meeting them he makes excuses and reasons as to why you can't! He doesn't want you to meet these people because they may know the secrets of his past...

20. They try and turn the attention to your past instead

He clearly doesn't want to talk about his past because he's guarding some kind of secret and so as a diversion tactic he shifts the focus onto your past instead so that you'll stop questioning him. He'll tell you that what's in the past is in the past and it doesn't matter now!

21. You've heard rumors that they have something to hide

When it comes to rumors there's often no smoke without fire. Think about all the rumors you've heard, there was probably some truth to them! If you've heard on the grapevine that he has some secrets that he's hiding something from his past then it is probably true!

22. They have a sense of guilt or nervousness

Often when people are hiding something from the past, they can never truly escape it. It's always there haunting them in their head. And it may be that he shows signs of guilt or he's nervous as though he's expecting something to go wrong and is randomly on edge.

23. They've had run-ins with the law or legal issues in the past

If he's had some run-ins with the law or he's sorting out some legal matters that you're not fully aware of what they are...then girl, he's definitely hiding something. And it sounds like whatever it was maybe quite major, seeing as it involves the law AND he won't tell you about it.

24. They open all their mail in private

Another sign that will tell you if he's hiding something is how he acts with his mail. When it comes through the door he'll get it as soon as it lands and if you touch it before him he gets upset. He opens it in private always, as though he doesn't know what it's going to say and doesn't want you to find out.

25. On social media, they are very careful about creating a persona and maintaining it

Social media can reveal a lot. We all know that it's a façade because it's a curated image and it gives a warped sense of reality. But if he tells you that he has NO socials at all, or he's SUPER careful about what he posts and what he gets tagged in, it could be because he's hiding his past.

26. They always change the subject or deflect from certain discussions

Deflection is one of the most typical techniques used by someone with something to hide. They might try and twist it onto you, or they might get defensive or just try and change the subject as quickly as possible. But all of these are fairly obvious  - he has a past he doesn't want to talk about for one reason or another,

27. They seem to have a ruthless attitude to cutting people off

Often when someone has a past that they are hiding they become very ruthless in being able to cut people off because of their desperation for people not to find out. And so you may have noticed that he can be slightly cut-throat when it comes to his attitude towards people and moving on from them.

Someone with a secret is often defensive, and always on the defense because they are always prepared for someone to question them on it. This is because it's always at the back of their mind. And so their reactions to things stem from the desire to keep it a secret.

29. He spends a lot of time away

Is he taking a lot of mysterious 'work trips' or trips with friends that he doesn't really go into detail about? Perhaps you've had an inkling that he's not going where he said he is. Aside from assuming that he's having an affair, he could be hiding something from his past, whatever that might be.

Dark pasts and secrets can take their toll on people's emotions. They weigh heavily on the mind and it can mean that he may be shutting himself off from getting too close emotionally. He may also be doing this because he is preparing himself for you to find out and so he's scared to get too close.
