The Alaskan favorite is the classic roast potatoes. What would Thanksgiving dinner be without roast potatoes? It's pretty much one of THE most essential elements of Thanksgiving dinner and it turns out that Alaskans, like many of us, pile the roasties high.

2. Texas - Stuffing

Stuffing, why is it SO delicious? It's a shame that stuffing is something we rarely eat aside from at Thanksgiving. Yet maybe that's what makes it so special. But according to Texans one of their favorite elements of Thanksgiving dinner is the stuffing, and rightfully so!

3. Nevada - Pumpkin pie

Well it's that time of year when fall comes, Halloween arrives and then before you know it it's Thanksgiving. It's the time of pumpkin pie. So it's no surprise that pumpkin pie is featured on the number one favorite spot of at least one USA state. And in Nevada, it was a clear winner!

4. Washington - Sweet potato casserole

Sweet potato casserole is a warm and hearty dish that in the USA often gets brought out around the time of Thanksgiving. It's sweet and delicious and there's nothing not to like. In Washington, the sweet potato casserole is one of the most looked forward to parts of Thanksgiving dinner!

5. California - Candied yams

Candied yams are exactly as they sound. It's baked yams that have been candied using sugar, caramel, or in some recipes - marshmallows. It's basically dinner and dessert all at the same time, what's not to love? In California, it's a regular dish to bring to Thanksgiving to add to the many side dishes.

You can't have a Thanksgiving dinner without roast turkey, right? And in Florida particularly roast turkey rates very highly on the list of top Thanksgiving foods. According to the state of Florida, the most important food at Thanksgiving is the turkey.

We all know about Kentucky fried chicken...well how about Kentucky fried turkey? It probably comes as no surprise that in Kentucky they wanted to fry the meat to make a delicacy that is very similar to the famous fried chicken, but a little bit more festive. It tastes JUST as good.

Here's one of the first healthy dishes we've heard that ranks at the top of the Thanksgiving food list. In North Carolina, the escarole salad came top of the list. It includes all kinds of ingredients which can vary according to what you have in the fridge!

10. Georgia - Gravy

A Thanksgiving dinner isn't complete without being loaded up with gravy. The sauce is what pulls the email together and makes it what it is. While some may think it's simply an addition, in Georgia they see the true value of gravy and rate it their favorite Thanksgiving food (although technically it's a sauce).

11. Oklahoma - Cheesy broccoli

Broccoli on its own is tasty, although let's face it, it would probably rarely be anyone's ultimate favorite Thanksgiving food. That is at least, without cheese. Cheesy broccoli bake on the other hand is something we could eat on its own, never mind just as a side.

The great thing about Thanksgiving dinner is that seemingly mediocre or less exciting ingredients are turned into something completely delicious. Veggie root bake for example. It's not just a side of boiled veggies, it's a delicious bake. No wonder it's Missouri's favorite.

Corn pudding is a USA classic made from corn kernels, eggs, milk, sugar, and added spices. Corn pudding usually makes an appearance during Thanksgiving or other special events throughout the year. It's homely and delicious and Michigan's favorite Thanksgiving dish!

14. Nebraska - Cranberry sauce

Cranberry sauce gives that unique mix of sharp/sweet/spice on the Thanksgiving dinner table. It can't simply be described as a condiment because cranberry sauce unites the entire Thanksgiving meal with that little bit of something special. In Nebraska, the plate is covered in cranberry sauce.

15. New York - Bread rolls

New York is infamous for bagels and pretzels and it seems that their tastes follow a very particular route because they voted bread rolls as the stat dish for Thanksgiving. While it may seem a little bit dull, they've got a point. The bread roll is the thing to soak up all the flavor and mop up the leftovers.

Cinnamon rolls with glazed icing have a taste and a smell like nothing else. As soon as you walk into a room you instantly know that cinnamon rolls are on the menu. Although they can be eaten all year round, they usually make an appearance at Thanksgiving1

Pecan pie: sweet, nutty comfort food with flaky pasty, and gooey filling. A Thanksgiving dinner wouldn't be complete without a slice of pecan pie (and a scoop of ice cream or a dollop of cream) to wash it all down. The Southern masterpiece is a firm Thanksgiving favorite in Louisiana.

Devilled eggs are a classic USA appetizer. The hard-boiled eggs are sliced in half and the yolk is mixed and filled with a delicious condiment such as mayo or mustard. They are a Virginian favorite and will always be a part of the buffet at to start of Thanksgiving dinner.

At that time of the year what is better than a warming, hearty bowl of spicy pumpkin soup? It warms you right from the inside out AND tastes delicious. Some people have this as a starter before their Thanksgiving dinner. Many people in Iowa see this as a staple part of the meal!

Brownies aren't exactly exclusive to Thanksgiving dinner. But when it came to voting for the favorite Thanksgiving dish, brownies came up top in Colorado. And really, you rarely make it throughout the Thanksgiving period without having a deliciously gooey brownie or two.

More and more, bacon is becoming a crucial part of the Thanksgiving dinner. It may be thrown in with the sprouts to try and make them more edible, or wrapped around sausages, or in Utah, simply cut and put on the plate of Thanksgiving dinner as though it has as much right to be there as the turkey!

Green bean casserole, what a healthy (kind of) choice to be the favorite element of Thanksgiving dinner. And while we say healthy...it's actually green beans loaded with cream, sprinkled with bacon pieces (of course), and topped off with fried, crispy onions.

Ham and turkey are a perfect Thanksgiving dinner combination. They go together very nicely with the sweet and salty ham complimenting the milder taste of the roast turkey. Plus, in Montana, the ham isn't cooked plain. It is glazed with honey so that the outside is sticky and sweet.

In Hawaii, there is a fairly controversial choice when it comes to being a Thanksgiving dinner favorite. Stuffed mushrooms may seem like an option for the vegetarians who can't eat the turkey. But, in Hawaii, the stuffed mushrooms are considered a crucial side dish to the meal.

Roasted carrots are sweet and lovely and far from boiled, watery carrots. And, in true Thanksgiving style, they are rarely left plain but are made into a delight in their own right. They may be glazed with honey, topped with bacon, coated in cheese...the options are endless.

Squash tarts are one of those elements that always make the Thanksgiving table look special. They are extremely aesthetically pleasing and they also taste SO good. In fact so good that it is the Pennsylvanian favorite. The squash is baked in a tart and it's often filled with onion and cream cheese.

When it comes to Thanksgiving, the cheese boards and selections come out. Cheese is a big part of Thanksgiving table spreads and brie and cranberry are one of the most popular, particularly in Vermont. It can even be put in pasty to make a brie and cranberry tartlet.

Whilst our minds often wander to roast turkey or sausages when it comes to Thanksgiving dinner, it wouldn't be what it is without the root veggies! And in Massachusetts, the often-overlooked veggies are very much appreciated. So much so that root veggies were one of their favorite Thanksgiving foods!

29. Alabama - Apple fritters

Anything fried tastes pretty good. Especially apple, when it's coated in sugar. These things are SO moreish. Apple is a flavor we see all year round however it comes into its own at Thanksgiving. In Alabama, Thanksgiving dinner isn't complete without an apple fritter at the end.

30. South Carolina - Cherry pie

How could we forget the cherry pie? In South Carolina, it's most certainly never forgotten as it is the queen of the Thanksgiving table. Once they've eaten their way through the Thanksgiving mains it's time to move on to dessert...and most importantly the cherry pie!
