Signs the Husband Does Not Like Our Cooking

1. They say a meal is 'ok'

Sometimes men aren’t the most enthusiastic about our cooking, but if your husband says your hard work is just ‘ok’ and stays silent for the rest of the meal, then it might be an indicator that he’s not all that into it. It could be a case that he’s not wild for a particular dish, so you can always ask if it’s bothering you.

2. He pulls a face when he eats

If your hubby is staying quiet, you sometimes only need to look at his face to suss out whether he likes a dish or not. Men aren’t very good at hiding their true feelings from their wives, so if you catch him pulling ‘that’ face, you know you’ve got a culinary disaster on your hands.

3. They suggest that 'we should maybe only have this once in a while'

(Image/ Source: reddit.com)
You’ve probably said this one to him too at some point, but if you man suggests that you should only eat a certain dish every now and then, chances are, he’s not overly keen. It might be a case that he just has to be in the mood for certain food, but you know best – and you’ll also know if he’s trying to spare your feelings.

4. He offers to cook instead

(Image/ Source: reddit.com)
In some households, cooking is split between both husband and wife (which we very much approve of). So it won’t be much of a big deal if your man volunteers to cook instead. However, if it’s usually you who prepares the meals and your hubby actually decides to step in, it’s a sure-fire sign he’s not enjoying your food.

5. He eats at work or at a restaurant/cafe

Does your man always eat at work, or at a restaurant with colleagues? While it might sometimes be easier for him to do so if he’s on a busy schedule, he shouldn’t be doing this all time, as it really impacts your home life. And if he’s doing that just to avoid your cooking, a conversation definitely needs to be had.

6. He's always busy with something else at dinner

(Image/ Source: reddit.com)
Is your man always conveniently somewhere else when you’re plating up dinner? He might be lurking in the garage, or playing video games with his friends. Instead of coming to the dinner table, he just tells you to leave food out and he’ll eat later on. Which isn’t really the best way to go about things…

7. He tries to give you cooking tips

(Image/ Source: sportskeeda.com)
Some men just LOVE giving instructions to women. If your husband is constantly hovering over your shoulder giving you tips and advice as you cook, you can guarantee that he thinks he can make a dish better than you. He can try cooking for himself then!

8. There's always a LOT of food left on his plate

(Image/ Source: reddit.com)
A surefire way to tell that someone doesn’t like your food is when they leave most of it on their plate. If your husband takes just a few mouthfuls, or seems to do nothing other than push his food around the plate, chances are, he’s not that keen. He might even go for the full house and tell you he’ll ‘eat it later’, which means he’ll be chucking it in the bin at the first opportunity.

9. He prefers take out food

(Image/ Source: reddit.com)
Let’s face it – we all probably love a naughty takeout now and again. But if your hubby is constantly ordering food, it’s a cause for concern. Not only does it suggest that he doesn’t like your cooking, but it can also be really bad for his health if he’s regularly loading up on junk food.

10. He keeps sending you recipes

(Image/ Source: reddit.com)
Many of us have probably hinted at a recipe we’d like our other half to cook us at some point, but if your hubby is regularly sending you recipes to help you ‘get more confident’ with cooking, then you can take that as an indicator that he’s just not that into your food.

11. And buys you cookery books

(Image/ Source: reddit.com)
As passive-aggressive gestures go, this is up here with the worst of them. If your man has actually gone as far as buying you cookbooks rather than having a straight conversation with you about mealtimes, then he needs to check himself! Maybe he should try the cookbooks out for himself…

12. He never says anything positive about your cooking

(Image/ Source: reddit.com)
Some men just aren’t that complimentary (and we personally think this is something they need to work on.) And while we can get past it most of the time, it’s not always nice to hear zero positive things about all your cooking – especially given how much work and effort it takes. If you’re never given a good word about your food, ask him outright if he actually enjoys it and appreciates it.

13. He complains about the smell of your food

(Image/ Source: depositphotos.com)
This one is a bit of a giveaway. If they come out with the classic ‘what’s that smell?’ line with a look of disgust on their face, you can guarantee that they are not a fan of your culinary efforts. Perhaps he can get in the kitchen and cook for himself instead…

14. He criticizes

(Image/ Source: thetimes.co.uk)
Some men will do absolutely anything to get out of being honest with you. And you can sometimes understand why, as they don’t want to hurt your feelings. That being said, some men will straight up tell you what you did wrong, which can get a little overbearing, to say the least.

15. He doesn't like how messy the kitchen gets

(Image/ Source: reddit.com)
Are you a bit of a whirlwind in the kitchen? Are there pots and pans in the sink, and tons of mess all over the kitchen surfaces? Some husbands get super upset about this, and when they’ve had a bad meal, they can get even more upset about it than usual.

16. He adds things to your meals

(Image/ Source: reddit.com)
If your husband likes to take over when you’re trying to cook, he’s either a control freak, a competent cook himself, or thinks he’s better than he actually is. Regardless, that means that your food just isn’t that great – and he knows exactly what to do to make it better. Obviously.

17. They tell you about their friend and families amazing dishes

(Image/ Source: reddit.com)
If your man gets spoilt by his friends and family with food (especially by his mama) then you’ve already got the odds stacked against you. Your food will never truly compare, and he’ll rub salt in the wound by telling you about the latest, greatest creation he’s been presented with at home.

18. They ask why you've cooked something a certain way

(Image/ Source: says.com)
So you’ve managed to sit down for dinner together after a busy day. He takes a bite into the meal you’ve made, and he asks you why you’ve added this particular ingredient, or cooked something in a certain way. If he’s questioning your cooking process, then it suggests he’s not the biggest fan of your food.

19. He takes over your cooking

(Image/ Source: reddit.com)
You’ve started chopping up some nice ingredients you’ve bought from the grocery store, and your man immediately starts interfering. He takes some ingredients to chop, but then he wants to start frying, adding more garlic and seasoning, until he’s taken over the entire kitchen.

20. He can't eat your food without adding seasoning

(Image/ Source: reddit.com)
If your husband immediately adds seasoning to your food without even trying it, it’s a good indicator that he isn’t that keen on the taste of your food. He might think that it’s bland, or lacks that hit of salt that he craves. Either way, it’s clear that your dishes aren’t up to his exact standards.

21. Or will add extra sauces

(Image/ Source: reddit.com)
The same goes for all those additional sauces he’s thrown all over his food before he’s even taken a bite. It’s clear that he wants a bit more oomph from his food, and he’ll do what he can to try and change the taste. Not exactly what you want to see after you’ve spent so much time and effort making him dinner.

22. He tells you that your dishes could be better

(Image/ Source: reddit.com)
As signals go, this is a pretty obvious one. If he’s getting a little passive-aggressive and tells you that your food could be better if you just cooked something for less time or added different ingredients, then it’s clear he’s not exactly bowled over by your culinary skills.

23. They prefer to microwave or frozen meals

(Image/ Source: reddit.com)
Does your man like a lot of microwave and frozen meals? If so, you might want to keep a close eye on his eating habits. He could be trying to get out of eating your food, and or prefer to eat something a whole lot more convenient than your current offerings.

24. He says he doesn't want dinner because he had a big lunch

(Image/ Source: reddit.com)
So you’ve started making a big, expensive dinner for you and your husband. He’s had a busy week, and you want him to feel cared for. But when he comes through the door, he tells you he’s had a big lunch and doesn’t want anything. And it’s not the first time he’s played this card…

25. He gives a lot of his food to the dog

(Image/ Source: reddit.com)
If you have a furry friend at home, you might find that they appreciate your food more than anyone else! Some people will tactically give their dog food from the dinner table if they’re not enjoying a particular meal, so keep an eye on your hubby (and your pet) if you suspect he’s not keen on your cooking.

26. He encourages you to take a cooking class

(Image/ Source: seattlemet.com)
You might be oblivious to the fact that your husband doesn’t like your food. Some men will hide it well, but if you start receiving subtle hints about taking a cooking class from your other half, it’s not exactly a positive sign! If he doesn’t cook himself, maybe you can encourage him to attend one too…

27. He says he's not hungry

(Image/ Source: reddit.com)
What can you do to get out of eating food you don’t like? Tell the person who’s cooking that you’re just not hungry. It’s the perfect excuse for getting out of those painful dinners that just don’t satisfy. If you’re on the receiving end of this though, it can be really hard not to take this personally.

28. He asks family members to teach you to cook

(Image/ Source: food.ndtv.com)
If he’s slyly asking other family members to take you through some recipes and show you how to cook, you can guarantee that he isn’t all that keen on your food. It might be his way of trying to help, but it can be a little patronizing, to say the least.

29. He discourages you from having dinner parties

(Image/ Source: reddit.com)
So you’ve got an amazing vision for a top-tier dinner party. However, your hubby doesn’t seem thrilled about the idea, and tries to get you to abandon this plan. While it might well be because he doesn’t really want to host, there could be other reasons as to why…

30. He tells you that you're a bad cook

(Image/ Source: reddit.com)
The most obvious way to find out your other half doesn’t like your food? He straight-up tells you that it’s bad - which might not do wonders for your cooking confidence. If he does end up saying this to you, you’re welcome to tell him he can do his own cooking instead!
