Comparing Classrooms Around The World

Iraq

Image Source / InsiderThe education system in Iraq is known as one of the best in the Middle East. This photo shows pupils in Iraq being dismissed from their elementary school classroom, located in eastern Mosul. In some parts of the world, students have to get to class during times of war or political unrest.

China

Students at schools in China have to face issues of pollution in the air. That means that sometimes classes in schools have to be cancelled if the pollution levels are too high. When this happens, teachers can virtually broadcast to their students working from home.

India

In classrooms in India, traditional and religious rituals are performed. Here, in an assembly, students spend the time offering prayers during an event named Matru-Pitru Puja, which is also known as Parents Worship, where the school children pray for their parents.

Tunisia

Some people might have been scalded in their life for folding their arms, and maybe some body language experts would say it's a defence mechanism, but for these school children in Tunisia, folding their arms is done to show that they're paying attention in class.

Vietnam

Some classrooms around the world don't even have access to electricity. This classroom in Vietnam, considered third-grade, doesn't have electricity or even books. In this school - Van Chai in Dong Van - classes are taught using the local Hmong language.

France

In a shockingly different - and colourful - contrast to the Vietnamese classroom, these children in France have bright electrical lights, textbooks, large desks and comfortable chairs. Bright blue doors and a green chalkboard are the norm for this school in Marseille.

South Africa

This is a classroom of 11th-grade students completing their education in Soweto, South Africa. Their teacher, Reginald, poses with his students of Sekano-Ntoane school, and here you can see a classroom of standard brick walls and simple desks.

Malaysia

This school in Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia, saw around 36 male students back in 2015, pictured here reading the Koran. Their ages ranged from 11 to 18 years old. The school is called Madrasah Nurul Iman boarding school.

Germany

In this nursery school in Eichenau, Germany, a good breakfast is prioritised before the students start their learning day. The school, based close to Munich, sees the students eating breakfast together at tables before they move to their classrooms.

Japan

Here you can see students of Takinogawa Elementary School in Tokyo in a first-grade classroom with their teacher, Takakusaki. This picture was taken during their homeroom downtime period outside regular classes in Tokyo, Japan.

Australia

A group of students in Sydney, Australia, look very invested in their chemistry lesson. During this class, they're using chemistry equipment to make the compound of an anti-parasitic medicine, which is used against malaria.

Turkey

Here is a classroom of Fatih Sultan Mehmet Primary School in Ankara, Turkey. Pictured are Syrian refugee children and students in the second grade, preparing for the start of one of their lessons.

Brazil

Here are pictured students enjoying an art lesson in their Sao Paulo classroom in Brazil. These pieces of paper used by the students for an art and painting class are actually made from recycled cigarette butts.

Spain

In this brightly-painted classroom in northern Spain, students are posing with their teacher, Marisa Solaguren, in the fishing town of Bermeo. This particular school is a public primary school,

United Kingdom

One of the more formal and 'posh' schools of the UK, Harrow School in Middlesex sees its pupils donning straw hats as part of their strict uniform. Former celebrity students of this particular school include actor Benedict Cumberbatch and prime minister Winston Churchill.

Morocco

Another bright and artistic classroom is this one in Rabat, Morocco, at the Oudaya primary school. It looks like the students were allowed to decorate the walls themselves, supervised by their teacher, Moulay Ismael Lamrani posing with them here.

Ukraine

At this school in Kiev, Ukraine, the classroom has a more formal and austere vibe to it (though of course these students are older). The students here are 16 to 17 years old in their final year, with their art teacher Hanna Snitko, at the Ukrainian Humanities Lyceum high school.

Georgia

This classroom at a school in Georgia (the country where Europe and Asia meet, not the US state) shows teacher Tsipuria posing with her fifth-grade class in Tblisi, which is the capital of the country. Another brightly decorated wall for this one!

Cuba

An altogether different vibe for the classroom at this school in Havana, Cuba, because it's a dance school: Cuba's National Ballet School, to be exact. Students here look highly focused on perfecting their dance training!

Massachusetts

This classroom in the Boston Latin School in Massachusetts, USA, is one of the oldest public schools in the country. It was founded in 1635, and here students in this seventh-grade class are learning Latin.

Yemen

This picture of schoolchildren in this primary school in Yemen is not just one class, but the whole school. It's a one-room school in a small village, but what it lacks in size and student population, it makes up for in the stunning mountainous views surrounding the region.

Missouri

This classroom shows students at Beaumont High School in St Louis, Missouri. This school has that old and traditional vibe to it, and classroom atmospheres show that teacher and pupils really get on here. Students in this classroom study Geometry.

Netherlands

Here on Sports Day in this Dutch school, the students of this class are Year 9, so around 13 to 14 years old. This particular classroom is outdoors because it's a PE lesson, which is a source of horror for a lot of students and surely some of them pull a sicky to get out of it from time to time if they're not the sporty type!

Spain

A very different classroom environment for these students in the middle of a music lesson, laden with instruments. The classroom seems quite small to say all those huge instruments need to fit in. This school in Madrid, Spain, sees these students being taught the Suzuki method for their music.

Peru

This school is located in a small village in the mountains of Tiracanchi. It takes around four hours in a wagon to get there. A quarter of the schoolchildren here speak only their native language of Quechua. At this school, teachers are the main problem, as the locals aren't educated enough to be able to teach, and educated teachers from bigger cities don't want to live in this remote location.

Ethiopia

This is a classroom in Gambella Elementary School in Ethiopia. It's in a small village with beautiful surroundings, and the school itself is very basic. There are only five classes in this school, and the building here sees the original stonework and dirt ground of the building being the location of these students' lessons.

Bangladesh

This school clearly takes pride in its reputation, as students are seen to wear very strict and formal uniforms. That formality also extends to the classes themselves, which are rather strict, too. The students in this class may aspire to be doctors or lawyers. With no decoration or brightly coloured walls, maybe this will help them focus!

Taiwan

This classroom in Taipei, Taiwan, reveals a class full of sleeping students - for good reason! These particular naps were actually planned, as schoolchildren get a 30 minute nap during the day after having lunch in the classroom with their teacher. They start lessons again after their nap, hopefully refreshed!

Qatar

This school sees its pupils dressed formally in an official uniform and has a bit of a 'serious work' environment to it rather than rowdy teens. There's a little bit of colour on the walls for this classroom, though, which adds a bit of fun to all the seriousness, at least!

Russia

More school uniforms for this classroom in St Petersburg, Russia, but a little less formal than some we've seen on this list! But Russia does take education seriously, and apparently the students are decked out with designer shoes, too, with ambitions to go to university.
